GM crops fuel rise in pesticide use despite early promises, study shows

GM crops have increased agriculture's dependence on pesticides rather than reducing it, a study published in April 2025 found.
Drawing on data from four GM crops – Bt cotton, herbicide-tolerant (HT) soybean, HT and/or Bt maize, and HT canola, the researchers – including agricultural development expert Prof Glenn Davis Stone from Washington and Lee University and Bt cotton expert K. R. Kranthi of the International Cotton Advisory Committee – traced the surge in chemical use over three decades.
They found a paradox: while GM seeds were supposed to reduce pesticide use, their introduction caused pesticide use to soar.
The researchers consider the two most prevalent GM seed-pesticide technology regimes: Bt crops and herbicide-tolerant (HT) crops. Both seeds are billed as efficient technologies: HT crops are claimed to facilitate more efficient weed control, and Bt crops are claimed to control insect pests more efficiently.
However, the researchers found that, "Like other technological efficiencies... the increased use of GM crops over the past 30 years has not contributed to input reductions nor to land reclamations, but to the expansion of agricultural land and increased use of the very pesticides these technologies are purported to curtail." US farmers are planting too much GM Bt maize, leading to galloping pest resistance

Another study recently published in the journal Science concluded that US farmers are planting too much GM Bt maize, leading to increased resistance in corn rootworm, the pest that the maize was engineered to kill.
The authors, based in the US and China, write, "Twelve years of university field trial and farm survey data from 10 US Corn Belt states indicate that maize hybrids expressing toxins derived from the bacterium Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt maize) exhibited declining protection from rootworm feeding with increased planting while pest pressures simultaneously decreased. The analysis revealed a tendency to overplant Bt maize, leading to substantial economic losses; this was particularly striking in eastern Corn Belt states."

Switzerland to extend GMO moratorium by five years

Swiss lawmakers want more time to discuss how to deal with new genetic engineering methods by extending a long-running moratorium. The Senate made a decision to extend a moratorium on the cultivation of genetically modified organisms, which has been in place since 2005, until the end of 2030. In the overall vote there were no votes against and two abstentions.

The bill was drafted by the House of Representative's Committee for Science, Education and Culture on the basis of a parliamentary initiative. The House of Representatives had already approved the extension of the moratorium with a clear majority in the Spring session. This is the latest development in initiatives aimed to save Swiss agriculture from GMOs. Source: SwissInfo

Non-GMO product sales reached more than 19.4 billion in Germany in 2024

WIn 2024, Germans spent more than $19.4 billion on non-GMO food, the German Association Food without Genetic Engineering (VLOG) recently announced. Bearing VLOG’s non-GMO denoting label, “Ohne GenTechnik,” milk and dairy products accounted for the largest share of the consumer spending, at 67%. Poultry meat products accounted for 21%, eggs for 10%, and other products for 2%. Alexander Hissting, VLOG’s managing director, said, “The new German government must ensure now that ‘Ohne Gentechnik’ and organic...is able to continue to deliver GMO-free products for their customers in the future...A complete GMO labelling obligation right through to the end product is an absolute minimum requirement for industry and consumers. With such stable framework conditions, ‘Ohne Gentechnik’ will be able to continue to grow successfully.” Click here to continue reading this article.

Experts at Tufts School of Nutrition Science and Policy have other great swap ideas that boost the quality of your nutrition and reduce consumption of processed foods:

  • Cook up barley in place of white rice in soups, with stir-fry, or as a side dish with chicken (skinless) or fish.
  • Sprinkle your salads and side dishes with chopped nuts such as walnuts and almonds in place of croutons.
  • Use a mandolin to thin-slice apples, carrots, and celery for crunch in place of chips.

Remote Monitoring Helps Control Hypertension

Doctors recommend that people with high blood pressure use a home monitor, suggesting it’s critical in getting the condition under control.

Dr. Karen Margolis, executive director of research at the HealthPartners Institute in Minneapolis, and her colleagues tested a "telemonitoring" program designed to give patients more help.

Their home readings were sent electronically to a pharmacist within the health system who then had regular phone "visits" with the patients. Over the next 18 months, compared with patients on standard care, those in the telemonitoring program lowered their blood pressure by an extra seven to 10 points on average, the study found.

And over five years, they were half as likely to suffer a heart attack or stroke, or to develop heart failure.

Dr. Tracy Stevens, cardiologist and volunteer expert with the American Heart Association, stressed the broader message was that home monitoring is critical.

"This cries out for larger studies," she said.

"A blood pressure measurement taken in the doctor's office may not reflect what's going on in our daily lives. We want to treat the home blood pressure, not the office blood pressure."

The American Heart Association recommends you follow a low-fat diet. Individuals are encouraged to eat polyunsaturated fats (vegetable oils) and avoid saturated fats (animal fats). They also recommend eating 11 servings of grain a day.
This is a recipe for disaster. Excess grain consumption leads to insulin resistance and increases inflammatory chemicals, the real cause of heart disease. Research shows that there is evidence that saturated fats are bad for your health, but there is plenty of evidence that saturated fats actually help prevent heart disease and strokes.

When the FDA’s vaccine committee (VRBPAC) announced it would be discussing Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) vaccines and monoclonal antibodies at its December 2024 meeting, ICAN had its attorneys send letters both before and after the meeting demanding that it address the serious and alarming safety concerns with these products. FDA recklessly ignored these issues and approved Merck’s RSV monoclonal antibody, Enflonsia (clesrovimab), on June 9, 2025.
In the Enflonsia trials, twice as many infants died in the Enflonsia groups compared to the “placebo” groups. Yet, Merck blithely stated that “no deaths were considered related to study intervention by investigator” and that the safety profile was “generally comparable to placebo.” And FDA let Merck just brush it under the rug.
ICAN’s letters also highlighted alarming data about Pfizer’s prenatal RSV vaccine, Abrysvo, which was approved by FDA in August 2023 even though its clinical trial showed the risk of preterm birth (36 weeks or earlier) was higher in the vaccinated group than the control group. Rather than insist Pfizer figure out why it was triggering preterm births, FDA simply restricted the licensed use of the vaccine to women at 32-36 weeks gestation. Apparently, FDA figured that if the vaccine caused the women to go into labor four weeks after taking it, as it had in the trial, the women would be closer to full term and so this would “solve” the premature birth issue.
Given the blatant safety concerns, it is hard to understand why any of these RSV products have been approved. Stay tuned as ICAN intends to push back on FDA’s blatant disregard for the safety and wellbeing of newborns and pregnant mothers.​

I want to share something personal—and scientific—that changed how I think about milk and protein forever.

Growing up, I struggled with severe asthma, triggered after switching from breast milk to regular cow’s milk formula. It wasn’t until much later that I discovered not all milk proteins are the same.

Conventional cow’s milk contains a protein called A1 beta-casein, a genetic mutation that produces an inflammatory peptide during digestion. This fragment has been linked to gut inflammation, autoimmune reactions, and even cognitive issues.

In contrast, A2 beta-casein—the original form of milk protein found in human and goat milk—does not produce this inflammatory peptide. Cholesterol-lowering drugs are recommended as a safe and effective way to prevent heart attacks and strokes. Over the last twenty years, the pharmaceutical companies have promoted cholesterol-lowering statin drugs with such fervor that they’ve become household names: Lipitor, Crestor, Vytorin, Zocor, and others. Sixteen million Americans take Lipitor, the most popular statin drug. Statin sales in the U.S. alone are over $12.5 billion a year.
No doubt, the statins lower cholesterol levels and perhaps do lower the risk of dying from a heart attack–at least in patients who already have had one–but the size of the effect is unimpressive. For instance, in one of the experiments, the CARE trial, the odds of escaping death from a heart attack in five years for a patient with manifest heart disease was 94.3 percent, which improved to 95.4 percent with statin treatment. This difference of 1.1 percent is surely not worth all the hype these medications have received, especially since the potential side effects from these drugs may include congestive heart failure.
The acknowledged side effects of statins include muscle pain and weakness, nerve damage, and a potentially fatal muscle-wasting disorder called rhabdomyolysis. One statin, Baycol, has been withdrawn because it was linked to 31 deaths from rhabdomyolysis. Interference with production of Co-Q10 by statin drugs is the most likely explanation.
The heart is a muscle and it cannot work when deprived of the essential nutrient, Co-Q10. A deficiency of CoQ10 can lead to nerve damage and congestive heart failure.
While heart attacks have slightly declined, CHF (congestive heart failure) has more than doubled since Lipitor and other statins were first prescribed in 1987.
Taking statins for one year raised the risk of nerve damage by about 15 percent. Researchers studying CoQ10 have estimated that as little as a 25 percent reduction in bodily CoQ10 will trigger various disease processes, including high blood pressure, coronary artery disease, cancer, immune dysfunction, and fatigue.
