Are GMO Potatoes Safe? A Former Monsanto Bioengineer Tells The Truth

After I received my PhD, I went to the University of California in Berkeley to help develop a new branch of genetic engineering. I isolated several disease resistance genes from wild plants, and demonstrated, for the first time, that these genes could confer resistance to domesticated plants. Monsanto liked my work and invited me to lead its new disease control program in St. Louis in 1995.

I should not have accepted the invitation. I knew, even then, that pathogens cannot be controlled by single genes. They evolve too quickly around any barrier to infection. It takes about two to three decades for insects and plants to overcome a resistance gene, but it takes only a few years, at most, for pathogens to do the same.

I did accept the invitation, though, and the next six years became a true boot camp in genetic engineering. I learned to apply many tricks about how to change the character of plants, and I learned to stop worrying about the consequences of such changes.

In 2000, I left Monsanto and started an independent biotech program at J.R. Simplot Company in Boise, Idaho. Simplot is one of the largest potato processors in the world. It was my goal to develop GMO potatoes that would be admired by farmers, processors, and consumers.

Genetic engineering had become an obsession by then, and I created at least 5,000 different GMO versions each year — more than any other genetic engineer. All these potential varieties were propagated, grown in greenhouses or the field, and evaluated for agronomic, biochemical, and molecular characteristics.

The almost daily experience I suppressed was that none of my modifications improved potato’s vigor or yield potential. In contrast, most GMO varieties were stunted, chlorotic, mutated, or sterile, and many of them died quickly, like prematurely-born babies.

Despite all my quiet disappointments, I eventually combined three new traits into potatoes: disease resistance (for farmers), no tuber discoloration (for processors), and reduced food-carcinogenicity (for consumers).

Doubts Begin to Creep in About GMO Potatoes
It was as hard for me to consider that my GMO varieties might be corrupted as it is for parents to doubt the perfection of their children. Our assumption was that GMOs are safe. But my pro-biotech filter eventually wore thin and finally shattered entirely.

I identified some minor mistakes and had my first doubts about the products of my work. I wanted to re-evaluate our program and slow it down, but it was too little too late. Business leaders were involved now. They saw dollar signs. They wanted to expand and speed up the program, not slow it down.

I decided to quit in 2013. It was painful to leave behind the major part of my adult life.

Major Mistakes Are Identified
The true scope of my errors became obvious to me only after I had relocated to a small farm in the mountains of the Pacific Northwest.

By this time, Simplot had announced the regulatory approval of my GMO varieties. As the company began to plan for quiet introductions in American and Asian markets, I was breeding plants and animals independently, using conventional methods. And since I still felt uncomfortable about my corporate past, I also re-evaluated the about-two-hundred patents and articles that I had published in the past, as well as the various petitions for deregulation.

Not so much biased anymore, I easily identified major mistakes.

For instance, we had silenced three of potato’s most conserved genes, assuming that the three genetic changes would each have one effect only. It was a ludicrous assumption because all gene functions are interconnected.

Each change had indeed caused a ripple effect. It should have been clear to me that silencing the ‘melanin gene’ PPO would have numerous effects, including an impairment of potatoes’ natural stress-tolerance response. Similarly, asparagine and glucose are among the most basic compounds of a plant, so why did I believe I could silence the ASN and INV genes involved in the formation of these compounds? And why did nobody question me?

Another strange assumption was that I had felt able to predict the absence of unintentional long-term effects on the basis of short-term experiments. It was the same assumption that chemists had used when they commercialized DDT, Agent Orange, PCBs, rGBH, and so on.

The GMO varieties I created are currently released under innocuous names, such as Innate, Hibernate, and White Russet. They are described as better and easier-to-use than normal potatoes and to contain fewer bruises, but the reality is different.

The GMO potatoes are likely to accumulate at least two toxins that are absent in normal potatoes, and newer versions (Innate 2.0) additionally lost their sensory qualities when fried.

Furthermore, the GMO potatoes contain at least as many bruises as normal potatoes, but these undesirable bruises are now concealed.

There are many more issues, and some of them could have been identified earlier if they had not been covered-up by misleading statistics in the petitions for deregulation.

How could I have missed the issues? How could I have trusted the statisticians? How could the USDA have trusted them? My re-evaluation of the data clearly shows that the GMO varieties are seriously compromised in their yield potential and in their ability to produce normal tubers.

Why Consumers Need to Be Concerned
Unfortunately, most GMO potatoes end-up as unlabeled foods that are indistinguishable from normal foods. Consumer groups would have to carry out PCR tests to determine if certain products, including fries and chips, contain or lack the GMO material.

Given the nature of the potato industry, the most common potato varieties, such as Russet Burbank and Ranger Russet, will soon be contaminated with GMO stock.

I could just as well have written (and may write) about the experimental GMO varieties we developed at Monsanto, which contains an antifungal protein that I now recognize as allergenic, about the disease resistance that caused insect sensitivity, or about anything else in genetic engineering.

The Real Anti-Science Movement
On May 3rd, 2018, the columnist Michael Gerson wrote in the Washington Post:

Anti-GMO is anti-science.” His statement was echoed by Mitch Daniels, his colleague, who added, “[It] isn’t just anti-science. It’s immoral.”

But these two columnists are not scientists. They don’t understand the level of bias and self-deception that exists among genetic engineers. Indeed, anyone who is pro-science should understand that science is meant to study nature, not to modify it — and certainly not to predict, in the face of strong evidence, the absence of unintended effects.

The real anti-science movement is not on the streets. It is, as I discovered, in the laboratories of corporate America.

10 CRITICAL Things to Remember During the Holidays



1. Always choose love. Just remember that the people that are the hardest to love are the ones that need it the most.



2. Be love, instead of right.



3. Everyone is doing the best they can with the “tools” they have at the moment (many just don’t have the “tools”)



4. Forgive, let go and move forward. Do it for yourself.



5. Stop trying to control people (what they should say or do and how they should behave, etc.)



6. Stay away from discussing politics (that never ends well). If the conversation does go there, just revert to #2 above. :)



7. Take the time to do something nice for someone else (without expecting anything in return)



8. Reach out. This is a difficult time for many (especially those that have lost loved ones and those that are alone), so remember to reach out to them and shower them with your love.



9. Focus on what's important. RELATIONSHIPS—that is the most important "thing" in our lives. Don't neglect, ignore, or dismiss the people who mean the most to you. Life is short. They won't always be there.

There is a high likelihood that we will see an announcement from the Trump administration regarding new rules for sales of flavored vapor products in the next two days. This new policy may ban sales of any flavor other than tobacco and menthol.

We need to keep up the pressure on HHS/FDA officials, the Trump administration, and the Trump campaign and make sure that they know the consequences of banning flavors: Putting thousands of people out of work, closing down small businesses, and, most importantly, exposing consumers to greater risk by forcing people back to smoking or buying products on an underground market.

The Utter Obscenity Of Big Pharma In The USA
You have a lifesaving drug, it cures chronic myeloid leukemia (CML), but you are charging more than double the average annual household income for it, so you know FOR SURE that most people cannot afford it and, unless they are covered by insurance, they will die. What do you do?

The answer is you keep on hiking the price, year after year, up and up and UP.

Let me back up a bit before I explode…

Just for once, Big Pharma has a worthwhile product, it works, and it brings the life expectancy of a relentlessly fatal disease almost back to normal. It's not often that drugs can completely transform the trajectory of a killer disease — but for chronic myeloid leukemia, that is what tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs) have done.

CLL is characterized by overwhelming quantities of white cells (leukocytes, stained purple) in the blood; hence leukemia

Before these drugs came along, there were about 20,000 patients with CML in the United States. Now there are about 112,000 such patients, and that is projected to rise up to 180,000 in 2050.

However, the catch is that patients need to stay on the drug indefinitely. This is an issue because these drugs are very expensive, indeed. The high prices [of TKIs] has been described by caring doctors (not so many of those) as a scandal — they cost an exorbitant amount and put an enormous financial burden on patients, their families and the healthcare system.

So everyone was hoping that when the first of this class of drugs—Imatinib—came off patent, generic versions would reduce cost of treatment.

Ludicrous Pricing
When Imatinib entered the marketplace in 2001, it was priced at about $30,000 a year. That remained flat for a while and then rose steeply. By 2012, it was priced at $92,000, and then jumped to $132,000 in 2014, and then to $146,000 in 2016 when the generic version became available. This is in a country where the median household income is around $63,000, according to official 2018 figures.

Surely, the generic version would be much cheaper than that? But it was not to be. See, Novartis cut what’s called a pay-for-delay deal. What’s that, you ask? The patent holder—in this case Novartis—agrees to pay a potential competitor a large sum of money to keep their product out of the market for a time. They calculate the cost of the deal is less than the extra profit they stand to make.

With cars, it could (maybe) be considered a clever strategy. But with a life-saving pharmaceutical product IT IS NOTHING SHORT OF OBSCENE.

Thousands more died, while Novartis went on harvesting its greedy profits, stamping out any hope of an affordable cure.

One always has to consider that mass protests are sometimes staged. But I think it’s pretty clear that the Indian people are telling Novartis where to shove its patent!

Eventually, a generic entered the US market in early 2016. Because of tricky laws, the generic company (a subsidiary of Sun Pharmaceuticals Industries) was entitled to 6 months of marketing exclusivity. That meant that no other generic versions of Imatinib could be launched in the US until at least August 2016.

The generic was priced just a few thousand dollars less than the branded Imatinib. In 2016, branded Imatinib cost $146,000 per year, while the generic version was priced at $140,000.

It makes me so angry.

Sky-High Cancer Drug Prices
The US has the dubious distinction of having the highest expenditures in healthcare, but ranks far from the top in terms of improvements in life expectancy. Part of this is driven by the cancer drug experience, and healthcare costs have risen faster than gross domestic product!

Cost escalation began in the early 2000s, and eventually exceeded the median household income of a typical family. The price tag of any new cancer drugs now exceeds $10,000 per month ($120,000 annually).

This has been described as 'financial toxicity,' which comes on top of the usual toxicity of cancer treatment, and can limit treatment decisions, access to care, and affect outcomes.

But it’s not just a burden on patients. It’s a burden to society as a whole. These monstrous corporations have wormed themselves into a position where they are, in effect, a horrendous additional tax on us all, sick or not.

I’ve railed for decades that the UK has a supposedly socialized medical system. But they didn’t “nationalize” (take ownership) of the drug companies. Therefore British citizens pay a heavy common “tax” that goes straight to the private coffers of Big Pharma. Not the utopian ideal that the socialists like to boast about, is it?

But here’s the bit that made me rage and rush to my keyboard: in the USA the generic Imatanib was almost as expensive as the branded product. It’s held artificially high everyone can get a slice of the lucrative cake, while patients die in large numbers because they are not in on the game.

Contrast that price-fixing with other countries as follows: in Canada, the patented product cost $38,000, whereas the generic was priced between $5000 to $8000; the generic in India… are you ready for this?

…runs at about $400.

$146,000 (current) vs. $400. The price in India is not a charity figure; they make a profit! Go figure.

We have a clear disconnect between pricing in the US and what's available in the rest of the world.

Things Are Improving (Slightly)
At the beginning of 2018 the average price for Imatinib was about $2000 for a 30-day supply, whereas through September 2017, the price was about four times higher (roughly $8000).

Approached for comment, Stacie B. Dusetzina, PhD, associate professor of health policy and associate professor of cancer research at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine in Nashville, Tennessee, was cautiously optimistic, noting that prices of generic products have very recently fallen.

With more competition now, the price should drop even lower. Coupons offered through places like GoodRx will allow patients to purchase a month's supply of the drug for a few hundred dollars. The lowest price was at Costco, where a 30-day supply of 400 mg tablets sold for $245.74, which is 97% off the average retail price of $11,475.

Despite that, in 2017, generic Imatinib represented still only 28% of prescriptions for newly diagnosed patients. Of course there is the usual vicious disinformation by Big Pharma, that generics are “dangerous" or that they don’t work as well. All of it bullshit… there, see? They are making me cuss.

Maybe patients who can afford it should fly to India, have a nice holiday in the land of the Maharajahs, and fly home with a year’s supply of the generic, all for less than cost of a month’s Big Pharma prescription.

I’m on the scientific advisory board to an Indian company and I have no problem with their standards.

Neither, it seems, do Novartis and others; they have all their branded products made in India, the same place as the generics. Do I smell hypocrisy? Or is it the stench of B*S*? (ooops, there, I nearly said it again).
