Danger Increases Every Time Blood Pressure Moves Up

Dr. Chauncey Crandall, M.D., writes:


Women with slightly elevated blood pressure before they get pregnant may have an increased risk of miscarriage, even if they’re not diagnosed with hypertension.

Researchers examined data on 1,228 women with at least one previous pregnancy loss who were trying to conceive. Out of the 797 participants who became pregnant during the study, 188, or about 24%, had a miscarriage.

Even when their blood pressure was in a healthy range before pregnancy, each 10 mmHg increase in systolic blood pressure was associated with an 8% higher risk of miscarriage. Each 10 mmHg increase in diastolic blood pressure was associated with an 18% greater chance of miscarriage.

The American Heart Association defines hypertension, or high blood pressure, as a systolic reading of 130 mmHg or higher and diastolic readings of 80 mmHg or higher.

Systolic pressure reflects the pressure blood exerts against artery walls when the heart beats. Diastolic pressure indicates the pressure between beats.

Dr. Chauncey W. Crandall is author of Dr. Crandall’s Heart Health Report newsletter. He is a Yale graduate and is chief of the Cardiac Transplant Program at the world-renowned Palm Beach Cardiovascular Clinic in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida. He practices interventional, vascular, and transplant cardiology.

TIME​

This past week was Solis's 3rd anniversary. Three years of writing, of sharing, of supporting, and of (I hope) helping. It feels like a long time, and it also feels like no time.

This strange habit of time is something I noticed after my first year on this journey. When July rolled around again for the first time since I was diagnosed, it simultaneously felt like it had been the longest year of my life and also the shortest. I think it comes down to the amount of change, growth, tumult, and healing that takes place within any given period. The sheer volume of happenings makes the time go so incredibly quickly, but the depth to which things shift and evolve makes you certain that it has to have taken longer for all of that to develop and be realized.

However slow or fast it passes, the one constant thing about time is that it is always ticking by, and one of the most consistent things I've seen in people post-cancer (myself included) is a newfound reverence for this passing. Our grandparents weren't being corny when they said life goes faster than you think, and after cancer, that truth is something I take much more seriously.

You may love every aspect of your life just the way it is, and if that's you, that's fantastic :) But I would argue that almost everyone has something left undone on their bucket list, or some change they've been putting off, or some leap they've been on the edge of taking all their life. Ask yourself what that thing is (or things). Reflect on how you want your life to look next week, next year, or in 10 years. Because I have come to see cancer as a second chance, a second chance to start life again, but this time with you in the driver's seat and with the benefit of all the wisdom this journey has taught you and will continue to reveal. No matter the length of that second life, it's a path well worth taking.

My main goal post-cancer was simply to start sharing with the hope of helping others. I didn't know how long it would last and I don't know where it will continue to lead me, but I do know that it makes my heart happy. And I think, if you aren't sure where to start in your life after a diagnosis, focusing on those things that make your heart happy is the best place to begin the adventure. Your heart has likely always known where it has wanted to go, it just often takes something huge like cancer to convince us that it's time to listen.

Thank you for being here, for reading what I write, for sending me lovely emails back, for asking questions, for digging into your healing. That's what it's all about; that's what makes it all worth it. And here's to many more years of sharing and supporting one another!

Tips and Tools: Detoxing​

As a part of my MRI detoxing protocol, I take chelators and binders. Chelators pull toxins and heavy metals out of your tissues, and binders bind to them and carry them out of your body. Binders in particular are important during a detox protocol to ensure that the toxins you are working hard to remove actually make it out of your body.

There are lots of binders and chelators on the market (Quicksilver Ultra Binder is a great one), but they are often very expensive. So, I created my own chelator/binder mix loosely based on the ingredients in Quicksilver's. It contains both chelators and binders, and it also contains fibre and aloe, as binders can be constipating and of course that is the opposite of what we want during a detox. This mix is good for any time you are following a detox protocol, not just after a scan, and will support your body in getting rid of built up toxins in your system.

Intensive Detox Drink

You will need:
  • Bentonite clay (binder)
  • Activated charcoal powder (binder)
  • Spirulina powder (binder; if you struggle with high copper, leave out the spirulina)
  • Chlorophyll (chelator)
  • Ground/finely chopped parsley and cilantro or get a greens powder with both of these in it (chelators; note: you can use fresh parsley and cilantro or, if you don’t have fresh, you can use dried)
  • Aloe vera gel/juice (to help prevent constipation)
  • Freshly ground flax seed (to help prevent constipation)
  • Optional: Vital Reds powder (https://gundrymd.com/supplements/vital-reds/) or other polyphenol blend for antioxidant and inflammation support, plus it makes it taste way better!
To make it:
  1. Ahead of time, put 1.5 tsp each of bentonite clay, activated charcoal, and spirulina powder in a small jar or container and mix them well.
  2. For each day you are detoxing, add 1 tsp of this mix to 1 cup of water with a tablespoon each of aloe vera juice/gel, freshly ground flax, and chlorophyll, one scoop of vital reds powder, and half a tablespoon each of ground or very finely chopped cilantro and parsley (or a scoop of a greens powder that has parsley and cilantro in it).
  3. Whisk this mixture well, and down it!

Vitamin D Slows Diabetes Onset

Dr. Chauncey Crandall, M.D., writes:


According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than 27 million people in the United States have Type 2 diabetes.

A recent study in the journal Cell revealed that vitamin D may slow the onset of diabetes by protecting the beta cells of the pancreas, which manufacture and release insulin, the hormone essential for controlling glucose levels in the blood. If the beta cells produce too little insulin, glucose can accumulate in the blood at levels that are toxic to cells.

Researchers at the Salk Institute in La Jolla, California, used a compound called iBRD9 to boost the activity of vitamin D receptors, which had a protective effect on the beta cells of mice, bringing glucose levels within a normal range.

“We know that diabetes is a disease caused by inflammation,” explained senior author Ronald Evans. “In this study, we identified the vitamin D receptor as an important modulator of both inflammation and beta cell survival.”

By adding iBRD9 to the vitamin D, scientists could supercharge genes to trigger an anti-inflammatory effect and protect the beta cells even under stressful conditions.

Drinking enough water daily is paramount to support bodily functions, including digestion. Many people underestimate the importance of drinking water, not realizing that it helps maintain body temperature, keeps tissues and organs healthy, and plays a vital role in the metabolism and getting rid of waste.

While one cannot debate the significance of water, there is some debate over the correct temperature for consumption. Some people argue that cold water is worse for the body than hot or warm water, while others argue temperature is unimportant. Who is right? What does the science say?

Is Cold Water Problematic?

The best temperature for water might have more to do with where you live or how you practice medicine than anything else. Ayurvedic medicine, based on Indian traditions, proposes that cold water can slow down the digestive process and cause an imbalance in the body.

According to the practice, drinking cold water affects the body's temperature, essentially dampening the "fire" or Agni that fuels the body's system and contributes to overall health. The debate is that drinking cold water drops your core temperature and forces your body to expend additional energy to re-establish it.

Western medicine and its practitioners do not hold the same opinions. There is little research to suggest that cold water has an adversarial relationship with the body. According to most practitioners of western medicine, all that matters is that you drink enough water, which most people do not.

Despite the differences of opinion, there was a small 2013 study that investigated the effects of water at different temperatures on six people. The participants performed exercises in a hot, humid chamber, effectively dehydrating themselves. Then, each person was given water at different temperatures to test their responses.

The results found that water at 60.8° F was most beneficial, but not necessarily for the reasons you might think. The water temperature appeared to encourage more drinking, which resulted in greater hydration and less sweating.

The results of the study are too small to state any universal truth. However, it is interesting that cool water seems to be the most appealing.

Cold Water Versus Hot Water for Digestion

Unfortunately, there is no definitive evidence to suggest that either cold or hot water is best for digestion. However, the primary and conclusive evidence of most research indicates that drinking an adequate amount of water daily is crucial to overall health.

When it comes to water temperature, in most cases, it depends on the preference of the individual. As long as you are drinking enough water to maintain optimum bodily functions, you are Ok.

However, some people might need to avoid drinking cold water for medical reasons. Some studies suggest people with conditions such as achalasia, affecting the esophagus, should avoid drinking cold water because it can affect swallowing.

Ultimately, your water temperature is less important than the amount of water you drink. Many professionals suggest drinking half your body weight in ounces; for example, someone weighing 150 lbs should drink at least 75 oz of water daily.

Water is crucial to bodily functions. While people like to debate the benefits of different temperatures, the important thing is that you drink enough.
