The thing is, depression and anxiety are everywhere. They can hit anyone at any time… no matter your age, gender, or socioeconomic status.

To cultivate a neutral mindset, you have to practice observing your experiences without judging them.

This way you're less likely to get overly attached to situations in your life. Remind yourself that all emotional states are temporary.

Apple Blueberry Oat Bake

Forget boring oatmeal! Put a yummy twist on your normal breakfast.

This Apple Blueberry Oat Bake is a nutrient-rich, all-in-one dish that is perfectly baked, and a great healthy start to any day!

You only need one dish to prepare and bake this meal, so clean-up is a snap!

The steel-cut oats in this recipe make it a very good choice for individuals who must keep a close watch on their glucose too.

In a recent study of people with type 2 diabetes, those who consumed 100 grams of oats per day experienced significant reductions in fasting and post-meal blood sugar, compared to those who did not consume oats.

And although rolled oats and steel-cut oats are almost the same when it comes to nutritional value, steel-cut oats beat out rolled oats in two areas - fiber content and density. This makes steel-cut oats the best bang for your nutritional buck!

So grab a casserole dish and whip up this delicious and nutritious meal!
Apple Blueberry Oat Bake
Ingredients:
  • 1/4 cup steel-cut oats
  • 1 1/2 cups oat milk or your favorite non-dairy beverage
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 4 medium apples any kind, chopped
  • 1 1/4 cup blueberries fresh, or frozen
  • 3 cups baby spinach chopped
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp nutmeg
  • 1 tsp ground flaxseed
Directions:
  1. Preheat the oven to Bake at 350°F.
  2. In a baking dish or casserole dish combine the oats, oat milk, water and vanilla extract. Set aside and let soak while preparing the other ingredients.
  3. Once prepared add the apples, blueberries and spinach to the soaked oats and mix.
  4. Sprinkle the cinnamon, nutmeg, flaxseed and mix in.
  5. Bake for 45 minutes.
  6. Serve fresh from the oven and enjoy with a cup of hot tea! Preferably Amla Green!

Statins May Hamper Exercise

Statin drugs are taken by millions of Americans to lower cholesterol and reduce heart disease risk. But new research shows an unintended result of these drugs: older men exercising less.

Researchers analyzed health surveys on 3,071 men aged 65 or older living in communities across six geographic regions of the United States. They found that men who took statins averaged about 40 minutes less of moderate physical activity over a one-week period, compared to those who weren't taking the medication. They also found that new statin users had the largest decline in physical activity.

No reason was given for the decrease, but muscle pain is found in 5% to 30% of people who take statins — and some report feeling weak, tired, or less energetic.

Being sedentary is a major risk factor for heart disease, and this study involves precisely the type of people who need to be exercising more, not less.

Because statins can cause loss of energy, patients who take them can use the supplement coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10), which helps produce energy in the body’s cells.

The Benefits of Going Meatless for Dinner
Make no mistake -- it’s not just vegans and raw foodies who are on board with cutting back meat intake. Everyone from Mayo Clinic to Muscle & Fitness have published pieces on all there is to gain from abstaining at least one day per week.
We’d like to take this a step further and suggest replacing your meat-based dinners with a meat substitute or veggie-based fare. Never fear—there are plenty of delicious, protein-rich meals that will soon have you forgetting you ever cut back on meat in the first place.
Here are some of the notable heath, environmental, and financial benefits of going meatless for dinner!
1. Going Meatless Supports a Healthy Heart
Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States, claiming over 610,000 lives every year.
Meat is certainly a culprit in these chilling statistics, with red meat in particular putting individuals at increased risk of developing heart disease. In fact, the National Institute of Health found that eating red meat on a daily basis triples the levels of a heart disease-causing chemical called TMAO.
Fortunately, all hope is not lost. If you want to cut back on red meat intake, a good place to start is with meals that are filling, yet use veggies or tofu as a foundation instead. Black beans, quinoa, and seitan can all be used as substitutes for meat products like burgers and steaks.
2. Going Meatless Promotes Weight Loss
The fact of the matter is, most US residents eat more than enough protein on a weekly basis. It’s true that protein is incredibly important, but meat is not the only vessel for this essential nutrient. Moreover, meat is also rich in solid fats that diminish its net nutritional value. As a result, plenty of Americans find themselves putting on weight as they continue to use meat as their primary source of protein.
Vegetarians, on the other hand, were shown to lose more weight on average than those sticking to a typical American diet, according to a 2015 meta-analysis published in the Journal of General Internal Medicine.
Those looking to lose weight without dramatically altering their lifestyle might consider replacing their largest meat-bearing meal with lighter fare that features an array of protein-rich legumes like lentils.
3. Going Meatless Is Great for the Environment
Cutting back on meat isn’t just good for you, but Mother Earth too! A comprehensive analysis on farming and environmental damage shows just how dire the situation is regarding commercial meat farming. Published in the journal Science in June 2018, the review’s lead researcher Joseph Poore told the Guardian, “A vegan diet is probably the single biggest way to reduce your impact on planet Earth”.
4. Going Meatless Is Good for Your Wallet!
Buying free-range, organic meat is quite pricey, making it difficult for individuals and families to access high-quality meat on a regular basis. Indeed, there have even been reports of grocery store meat heists orchestrated by criminals looking to profit off the sky-high price tags of prime beef cuts. Instead of buying the cheap stuff, consider saving a couple extra bucks by picking up inexpensive but filling alternatives like beans or whole-wheat pasta.

What is the right diet to heal Hashimoto’s?

I hear this question a lot. Unfortunately, the answer isn’t always straightforward, as nutrition is the only science where multiple answers can be both correct and wrong. One (wo)man’s medicine can be another (wo)man’s poison.

Have you heard of adrenal fatigue, Jimi?

It has become a hot topic in the integrative medicine world in recent years. It’s so buzzworthy because the medical field is divided on the topic.

Some medical professionals say it’s not real… And others say they see evidence of it in their patients every day.
The one thing that can be agreed upon is something called adrenal insufficiency. Adrenal insufficiency is when your adrenal glands do not produce enough hormones for proper body balance.

Adrenal fatigue is simply the precursor to adrenal insufficiency.

So whether or not you put the label of adrenal fatigue on it or not is irrelevant… What matters is finding out what’s going on in your body and how it can be treated.

The adrenal glands sit atop your kidneys and produce a variety of hormones, including cortisol. If you are suffering from chronic stress, your adrenal glands will always be excreting a small amount of cortisol into your blood. Your adrenal glands are working constantly. When this happens, it causes low cortisol levels, which leads to adrenal fatigue.

So the question becomes how do you know if you have adrenal fatigue?

Why Mustard is Wasted on Hotdogs​

I have mothing against hotdogs, or mustard on hotdogs, but ...
... I say mustard is "wasted" on hotdogs. Why do I say that?
Because mustard contains an ezyme called "myrosinase" whose superpower is turning more of the precursors in cruciferous vegetables into phytochemicals like sulforaphane that stimulate the "antioxidant response element" (ARE)
in the nucleii of our cells, which increases production of antioxidants like glutathione.
Mustard has the myrosinase enzyme because it is a crucifer, like broccoli, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts, collard greens, etc.
We typically cook these vegetables, which destroys the myrosinase enzyme and stops the conversion of sulforaphane precursors into sulforaphane.
But if you add mustard (whether through the condiment or just a sprinkle of mustard seed powder) to cooked crucifers, you can increase sulforaphane formation.
Phytochemicals like sulforaphane that stimulate the antioxidant response element do so by stimulating Nrf2 (nuclear factor erythroid-2 related factor 2).
What's interesting about this is that two genes are directly involved with how responsive you are to this stimulation.
Those two genes are NRF2 (no suprise there) and KEAP1.
Keap1 is a protein that holds onto Nrf2 and restrains it from going into the nucleus to prompt the antioxidant response element to stimulate antioxidant production.
If you have certain variants of the NRF2 and/or KEAP1 genes, Nrf2 may be less responsive to phytochemicals like sulforaphane, and/or Keap1 may hold onto Nrf2 more strongly
People with these genetic variants are very often some of the people that develop chemical hypersensitivity, chronic fatigue syndrome, and other complex illnesses syndromes because they have a suboptimal antioxidant response to oxidative stress.
You might be surprised to learn that the reason that sulforaphane stimulates Nrf2 is that it is an prooxidant. It increases oxidative stress.
It is not an antioxidant. But because it is a weak prooxidant, it stimulates our antioxidant defenses without causing too much of a problem in most people.
So, in most people, it has a net beneficial effect through the phenomenon of "hormesis".
Hormesis is simply the process by which our response to stressors makes us stronger. Exercise is a hormetic stressor. Many vegetables contain compounds that are hormetic stressors.
One of the reasons that vegetables are good for us is that they are slighly "bad" for us in terms of the prooxidant effect of some of their phytochemicals.
That's not to say that vegetables don't also provide direct nutrition. They definitely provide many nutrients.
But despite the fact that most people do well to consume generous helpings of a wide variety of vegetables, not everybody thrives on vegetables.
And there can be many reasons for this, which I may get into in a future email.
In the meantime, if you are somebody that does well with cruciferous vegetables and like to eat them cooked (most of us do), you can increase their medicinal value by adding some mustard to your vegetables after they have been cooked and have cooled down a bit..
If you are not a mustard fan, sprinkling a small amount of mustard seed powder on your vegetables does not alter their flavor much.
And of course, if you're going to eat hotdogs with mustard, have some cruciferous vegetables with them so that the mustard does not go to to "waste"!
