Here were are, Jimi!

The final article of this 4-part series on genetics and your health from nutrigenomics expert, Jaclyn Downs!

So far, you've learned how your personal genetics can influence your detox capacity, neurotransmitter production, mood, energy levels, focus and much more!

Today, you can take a deep dive into genetic influences on hormone production and balance.

Here's a little taste, and a few of the genetic variants (SNPs) that are covered in the article titled:

Genetics and Hormone Production, Transport, Utilization, and Metabolism

Cytochrome P450 (CYP)
- This gene makes enzymes that are involved with hormone synthesis and break down. CYPs metabolize thousands of chemicals that are made by the body (endogenous) as well as the chemicals we are exposed to through diet and environment (exogenous). Some CYPs metabolize multiple chemicals, while others only metabolize one specific chemical.

CYP1A1 - This gene is involved with the first step of metabolizing estrogen into the desirable 2-hydroxyestrone estrogen. CYP1A1 genetic variants cause an upregulation in enzymatic activity which may be protective against 4-hydroxyestrone estrogen. This pathway can be blocked due to genetic predispositions or environmental toxins.

CYP1B1 - This gene is responsible for the first step of metabolizing estrogen, but shuttles it down the undesirable, DNA-damaging pathway that makes 4-hydroxyestrone. 4-hydroxy estrogen is a potent estrogen that may be oxidized into carcinogenic compounds. CYP1B1 variants cause an upregulation in activity, increasing the production of potentially harmful metabolites (dubbing this pathway the “breast cancer pathway”) that increase oxidative stress and demand more of the body’s glutathione (the body’s ‘master antioxidant’), potentially depleting its levels.

What this means is that it might not be a good idea for people with CYP1B1 variants to take a bunch of estrogen (birth control, fertility treatments, hormone replacement therapy) unless they are working with someone that will closely monitor their estrogen metabolites and work to encourage shifting them from the CYP1B1 pathway to the CYP1A1 pathway.

And that's just a small sample... you can Click HERE to read the full article!

And, in case you missed 'em, here are the other two articles in this 4-part series and an important invitation for anyone who'd like to go down this rabbit hole and learn how to truly personalize their approach to building health!

Article 1:

An Introduction to Functional Genomics: Know Your Genetics and Make Informed Personal Health Decisions

Article 2:

Genetics and Detoxification: Your genes are key to knowing what detox protocol will best suit your body.

Article 3:

Genetics & Neurotransmitters: Impact on Your Mood, Energy, Hormones, and More!

Why do we get sick, and does illness have a meaning?

These are questions I used to think about a lot when I’d be working late preparing spagyrics in the lab or pondering a difficult client’s case.

I think it's important to ask ourselves these questions because it allows us to view and consider things in a new light, which sometimes holds the key to finding the right medicine for someone.

If you’ve been tuning in with me over the past few weeks, you’re probably starting to see that alchemy has a very different perspective than conventional medicine. In this final episode, let’s take a look at the unique alchemical perspectives on health and disease.

According to the alchemical philosophy, getting sick is as natural as the process of leaves falling in autumn. Everything in nature moves in waves. The sun dips up and down, the moon waxes and wanes, and the seasons shift throughout the year.

Your health has its seasons of health and sickness too. As such, they all have a purpose and meaning (as hard as that can be to accept when we’re really sick!)

Alchemy views illness as initiation, and a key turning point in your soul’s development. By learning to see the underlying factors of your imbalance and what it has to teach you, you can embody a more complete version of yourself. In this way, alchemical medicines not only heal disease but facilitate you in your soul’s evolutionary journey.

Join me in the final episode of the four-part Alchemy and Herbalism series, where you’ll learn what happens when you start to take spagyric forms of herbal medicine, and how they function differently than regular herbal extracts to deepen your healing.

I also have a super important announcement!

Although this is the last part of the Alchemy and Herbalism blog series, you still may want to learn more about alchemy and how it fits into your work with medicinal herbs.

So keep an eye on your inbox, cause on May 23rd I’ll be sending you a special invitation to get my Herbal Alchemy Training Sessions for free.

These sessions provide a much more in-depth exploration of herbal alchemy and how it can influence your plant path. I’ll even give you a step-by-step tour through my lab and show you how you can prepare your own spagyrics at home.

So be sure to click the link in the email you get on May 23rd to join me for these special training sessions (clicking the link is how you “sign up,” so be sure to do so, or we won’t send them to you!)

Until then, enjoy Part IV of Alchemy and Herbalism: Illness as Initiation (which seems funny to say “enjoy illness as initiation”… but there ya have it =)

X-Ray Mammograms Starting at 40? New Recommendations Fail to Warn Women of the Real Risks
In a move that could negatively impact the overall health of women over 40, the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) released new draft recommendations on Tuesday urging all women to undergo x-ray mammography breast screenings every other year, starting at 40 instead of 50, as previous guidelines from 2016 recommended.

Although heart disease may seem like an inescapable fate or stroke of bad luck, the truth is it takes years, often decades, to develop. But here's the good news: we have a lot more control than we originally thought. We can become heart attack-proof by adopting simple lifestyle habits that can help strengthen and protect our endothelial lining.
In today’s minisode, Dhru discusses the lessons he’s learned on his heart health journey and the critical role our endothelial health plays in our risk for heart disease. He shares what damages the endothelial lining, which coats the inside of over 60,000 miles of blood vessels, and how you can strengthen it by supporting your mitochondria, circadian rhythm, sleep, and more.
Dhru also discusses his personal experience navigating high cholesterol despite making diet and lifestyle changes and how working with Dr. Michael Twyman and getting a series of lab tests helped him get a deeper look into what’s going on with his heart health

In this episode, Dhru dives into:
  • Crazy heart disease statistics (00:42)
  • Endothelial dysfunction as the root cause of heart disease (4:30)
  • The three events that lead up to a heart attack (6:28)
  • How plaque forms in our arteries (11:30)
  • Important lab tests for cardiovascular health(12:37)
  • Dhru’s heart health history (13:40)
  • Simple strategies to protect your endothelial lining (18:53)
  • Supporting and protecting your mitochondria (19:57)
  • Tips for programming your circadian rhythm (21:06)
  • Sleep hygiene and heart health (22:09)
  • Stress management and heart health (22:36)
  • Dietary factors (24:37)
  • Smoking and vaping (27:15)

NEW Episode of The HEAL Podcast!
Internal Family Systems Therapy For Intimate Relationships with Richard Schwartz Ph.D.
I am excited to introduce you to the brilliant work of Richard Schwartz Ph.D., the founder of Internal Family Systems therapy or IFS. Dr. Schwartz has been developing and refining the IFS model for over 40 years and has helped thousands of individuals achieve deep healing and greater well-being. During our conversation, Dr. Schwartz actually guides me through an IFS process and connects me with a deeply wounded part of myself, also known as an exile. I get vulnerable with the hopes of helping you see how powerful and transformative this work can be.

In this episode, we talk about Richard’s new book, You Are the One You’ve Been Waiting For: Applying Internal Family Systems to Intimate Relationships. We discuss the societal and cultural obstacles to intimacy and how IFS can lead to the healing and wholeness necessary to experience true intimacy. Rather than place the pressure on our partner to be the healers and caretakers of our wounded selves, we learn to become our own caretakers and therefore show up as a whole, integrated human in our relationships.

IFS therapy is based on the premise that each person has a "system" of different internal parts, each with its own thoughts, emotions, and behaviors. These parts can be healthy and adaptive, or they can be wounded, hurt, and problematic. The goal of IFS therapy is to help clients develop a healthy relationship with these different parts, cultivate compassion and empathy for them, and integrate them into a more cohesive, harmonious whole. IFS therapy has been used to successfully treat a wide range of mental health conditions, including anxiety, depression, trauma, and addiction. Have a listen and learn how to heal and hold your exiled parts, while embracing and calming your managers and protectors.

Stay tuned for more full video episode releases on YouTube in the weeks to come. You can also listen to this episode and all other episodes of The HEAL Podcast now on both SPOTIFY or APPLE.

Natural Health Tip:

Do you know that your diet can affect the pH level of your body, which can impact your overall health?
Maintaining an alkaline state is believed to be beneficial for the body, as it helps to neutralize acidity and promote a healthy environment for cells to function properly. By incorporating more alkaline-rich foods into your diet, such as fruits, vegetables, and whole grains, and limiting acidic foods like processed foods, meat, dairy, and sugar, you may be able to achieve an optimal pH level and improve your overall wellbeing.
Some potential benefits of an alkaline state in the body include improved digestion, increased energy levels, better immune function, and reduced inflammation. Additionally, it is believed that an alkaline state can help prevent chronic diseases such as heart disease, diabetes, and cancer.

Poor Dental Health Causes Bigger Problems

By Dr. Oz and Dr. Roizen, MDs

In the film “Castaway,” Tom Hanks' character, who is stranded on an island, performs a successful tooth extraction on himself using the blade of an ice skate. This eases his pain and keeps the infection from spreading.

While you probably shouldn’t opt for do-it-yourself dental care, you may not be getting regular check-ups and cleanings. A 2013 survey found that 23%-43% of American adults don't make needed appointments with their dentist or dental hygienist. And that's probably an underestimate.

Special: Is Sleeping in This Position Linked to Alzheimer's?

That kind of neglect can cause trouble — and not just for gums and teeth.

An infected tooth can trigger chronic sinus problems, according to the American Association of Endodontists. Maxillary sinusitis of endodontic origin happens when the root of a molar gets infected. Bacteria can spread into the sinus cavity and cause a chronic infection, triggering nasal stuffiness, pressure, and post-nasal drip.

Many doctors misdiagnose the condition. The real solution is a (painless these days) root canal.

In addition, chronic gum disease (periodontitis) is linked to Alzheimer's disease. A multinational study in the journal Science Advances looked at the brains of Alzheimer's patients and found that gum disease produces bacteria and toxins that migrate to the brain and are instrumental in creating amyloid tangles and tau proteins. Those conditions characterize Alzheimer's disease.

Gum disease is also associated with diabetes (it raises blood glucose levels), and poorly controlled diabetes makes gum disease worse.

Your best move is to brush and floss twice daily. See your dental hygienist twice a year for a cleaning and get a complete oral exam too.

Dear Jimi,

"On that day, the doctors diagnosed me with double breast cancer…"

When doctors told this patient that she had 3 months to live, she lost all hope in the world…

They told her that chemotherapy, radiation, and surgery would probably only make things worse, torture her, and make her last few months on the planet miserable…

But then she added this little known therapy to her cancer treatment protocol…

And her 3 month death sentence turned into 13 more years of a beautiful, happy life.

And you can watch this video to see the cancer treatment that gave her hope

Look, you might be scared…

Your doctors told you that they can only do so much…

They might have even told you that chemotherapy, surgery, or radiation are the ONLY way.

But the world’s TOP oncologists, scientists, and cancer experts know differently. (Such as Dr. Kevin Conners, Dr. Paul Anderson, and Dr. Joel Fuhrman).

That there’s a safer path, a path that combines traditional medicine with natural solutions that allow your body to heal itself…

>> And you can discover those natural solutions by watching this video

Plus…

When you watch this video, we’re also going to give you something extra special that you can start using 5 minutes from now…

It’s a brand new report called: "15 Cancer Fighting And Prevention Juice Shots You Can Sip All Day Long."

And here, we share with you some of the most delicious juices that are PROVEN to load your body with anti-cancer fruits and vegetables.

Hi Jimi!
May is Skin Cancer Awareness month and I thought this would be a great opportunity to catch up with my dear friend and stage IV melanoma thriver Bailey O'Brien.
Bailey was diagnosed in 2007 at 17 years old. She did everything the doctors told her to do, multiple surgeries, radiation therapy... but conventional treatment failed her.
After her third recurrence in 2011, with seven tumors in her neck, lung and spine, she walked away from conventional treatment and was able to heal in just 6 weeks with a radical holistic approach. Sound familiar?
Bailey has a lot of wisdom to share and she is a beaming ray of hope. I'm so proud of Bailey, her story is truly amazing.
I know you will be encouraged by this interview. Enjoy!

Hi Jimi,
Grapefruit is a proud member of the citrus family.
It’s a rich source of flavonoids, limonoids, carotenoids, vitamin C, and other antioxidants — with less sugar than oranges (and less sourness than lemons!).
But this noble fruit also contains compounds that could interact with up to half of all the prescription drugs on the market.
So should you steer clear? Or is grapefruit a safe and healthy food to enjoy?
Get the whole scoop on grapefruit here.
Yours for wise choices,
Ocean Robbins
P.S. Grapefruit could help to balance blood sugar, bring down blood pressure, fight cancer, and even contribute to weight loss. But is it safe to consume if you take (or might ever take) prescription medications? Here’s what you need to know about grapefruit.

Hello Jimi,

We live in a time when the major causes of death have shifted.

We rarely die of acute infections and modern medicine allows our body to survive most physical traumas.

However, we are seeing more and more people with chronic conditions including pain, fatigue, brain fog, allergies, and a lifetime medication regimen. Especially after the age of 40.

This is really not necessary. It may sound simple but this has happened because of the change in our lifestyle, we use our bodies less and we eat less wholesome foods.

Because of the decrease in dietary nutrients and movement, and the increase in modern toxicants, our immune systems are confused. Our “convenience lifestyle” is making us sick.

However, you can learn how to live in harmony with the current world and environment we have created.

We just have to learn NEW techniques for survival.

Helping Kids Avoid High Blood Pressure
By Dr. Oz and Dr. Roizen, MDs

When your dad's a pro athlete, there's a lot of pressure on you to measure up. These kids sure did:
  • Brett Hull was an eight-time All-Star in the NHL; his dad Bobby was a 12-time NHL All-Star. Both are in the Hockey Hall of Fame.
  • Harvey Catchings was a defensive force in the NBA from 1974 to 1985; his daughter, Tamika, played 15 years in the WNBA for the Indiana Fever, and was Defensive Player of the Year in 2005.
  • The Griffeys (Ken Jr. and Ken Sr.) hit back-to-back homers when they played for the Mariners, the only father-son pair in history to do so.
Special: Do This Simple Bedtime Technique for Your Prostate
Sometimes pressure can lead to excellence. But there's one kind of pressure on kids that's guaranteed to cause problems: high blood pressure.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 4 percent of kids 12 to 19 have high blood pressure (that's 1.3 million youngsters) and 10 percent have elevated blood pressure. Obesity is a huge cause of early-onset high blood pressure, and these kids are candidates for premature heart disease, heart attack, and stroke.
Heard enough to get you to make sure your kids are heart healthy? Here's what to do:
  • Help them get at least 60 minutes of activity daily.
  • Make sure they avoid processed foods, deli meats, and unhealthy fats; drink no soda; eat lots of fruits and veggies; and drink plenty of water.

What It Means When Your Heart Is Racing

By Chauncey Crandall, M.D.

How many times have you heard someone say that their heart was “racing”? For instance, think of how you felt as a child on Christmas morning when you were about to open your presents, or the rush of your pulse right before you walked down the aisle to be married.

This feeling happens because when people experience anticipation or excitement, a release of adrenaline can cause their hearts to beat faster, increasing blood flow and heightening awareness.

For the most part, this is a temporary, natural reaction to a stimulating situation. But there is another condition in which the heart is literally speeding out of control. The condition is called atrial fibrillation (AFib).

Special: Coronary Heart Disease: 5 Tips to Reduce Your Risk

It is the most common heartbeat irregularity in the United States. An estimated 2.7 million to 6.1 million Americans have atrial fibrillation — and that number is growing by about 160,000 new cases each year. In fact, the number of people with AFib is expected to reach 12 million by 2050.

Of course, some cases of atrial fibrillation are relatively mild. But most often, especially in older patients, the condition can be quite serious. It is a major source of congestive heart failure and directly causes up to one-fifth of all strokes.

The symptoms of AFib are fatigue, racing heartbeat, heart palpitations, quick or uneven pulse, sweating, weakness, chest pain or pressure, shortness of breath, and feeling dizzy, faint, or lightheaded. If you are concerned, get it checked out, as it can often be managed with medication.
