🫀 We’ve been discussing heart health. And we’re not the only ones!

Our heart's health has always been at the forefront of medical concerns.

It's no wonder; after all, it's the engine that keeps us running.

But did you know that throughout the 20th century, a lot of what we believed about heart health was, in fact, misleading? Hold on to your hats, because the history of heart health research has some plot twists that could rival your favourite thriller! 📖🔍

🍨 The Sugar Vs. Fat Debate

In the 1960s, a seismic shift occurred in dietary advice. The public was led to believe that fats were the main culprit behind heart diseases, while sugar largely slipped under the radar. A review published in JAMA Internal Medicine in 2016 revealed that the sugar industry sponsored research in the 1960s and 70s which downplayed sugar's role in heart disease and instead, spotlighted saturated fat. (1)

🥚 Cholesterol Confusion

Throughout the latter half of the 20th century, cholesterol was frequently demonised as the primary culprit behind heart disease. This vilification often led to misconceptions about what constituted a heart-healthy diet.

However, as research evolved, it became apparent that not all fats were created equal. Saturated fats and trans fats, primarily found in animal products and processed foods, emerged as significant contributors to elevated blood cholesterol levels and heart disease risk.

On the flip side, a plant-based diet, brimming with whole grains, fruits, vegetables, nuts, and legumes, has consistently demonstrated its prowess in promoting heart health, lowering cholesterol levels, and reducing heart disease risks. (2)


🌻 The Margarine Misstep

With butter condemned for its saturated fats, margarine became the "heart-healthy" alternative. However, what many didn't know was that margarine was loaded with trans fats, which we now recognize as significantly worse for heart health than the saturated fats in butter (important fact: there are healthy vegetable oils out there). (3)

Takeaway: just because something is made from plants, it doesn’t mean it’s good for you!

🏋️ Busting the Exercise Myth

Exercise has always been recommended for a healthy heart, but the type and amount have been debated. It was once thought that only vigorous, sweat-breaking workouts counted (hello, Jane Fonda?).

Recent research has shown that moderate activities, like walking or gardening, can also have significant heart benefits. (4)

Every step counts, literally!

📚 We Are Still Learning

While the 20th century saw its share of missteps and revelations, the 21st century has not been without its surprises. Did you know that air pollution is now considered a major cardiovascular risk, comparable to smoking? Recent studies have shown that even short-term exposure to polluted air can increase the risk of heart attacks, strokes, and death from heart disease. (5)

Whew! From misleading studies to surprising risk factors, our understanding of heart health has certainly evolved. And it's not stopping anytime soon!

I’m excited to have my mom in town this weekend.

Few things make me as happy as watching her interact with my daughter cooking, reading, singing, laughing, and even just the routines of brushing teeth and getting her dressed for school. It’s nice to have the help and my heart swells when I see their love and connection.

If you were to ask me WHY I do the work I do, my response would be it is these connections between loved ones. It’s that ability to be present, engage, and delight in spending time with those you love. My life’s work is to make more of that possible for longer.

Find the First Signs​

In a world where our relationships form the bedrock of our lives, it’s often family members that are the first to notice signals of cognitive decline. I was asked to contribute to a recent article in The Mirror about Bruce Willis and his rare dementia diagnosis, and learned that his family members dismissed the early symptoms as signs of aging and hearing loss.

‘“I’ve known that something was wrong for a long time,” she [daughter Tallulah Willis] confessed, adding that family members would often encourage each other to “speak up! Die Hard messed with Dad’s ears.”’ Fortune.com

What to Look For​

As we engage in life’s beautiful moments, it’s important to be mindful of certain signs that may indicate cognitive decline. As I stated in The Mirror article, “The earliest signs are typically changes in personality. This makes it hard to spot and sometimes is misdiagnosed as a psychological disorder.”

Other indicators are changes in memory, difficulty with familiar tasks, confusion about time or place, and challenges in communication and problem-solving can be early indicators. Additionally, shifts in mood, withdrawal from social activities, and changes in personal hygiene might suggest cognitive changes.

Testing​

It’s important to speak with a professional and to test. Here’s a TikTok video on my favorite cognitive test, the MoCA test.

The earlier cognitive decline is detected and protocols that are a part of the Marama Experience are implemented, the better opportunity for reversal and living out an independent life.

Another product ruined. Parmigiano-Reggiano makers are putting "edible" silicone chips in their cheese wheels to prevent counterfeiting, or so the story goes. Where it says these "cannot be read remotely" what possible reason is there to believe it? Don't eat it, and if you have any, throw it away.


I would expect to see other proprietary name product makers to follow suit.

I want to be specific with information, to avoid confusion. Until further information changes it again, that announcement of the microchips in the cheese applies only to authentic parmigiano reggiano made in Italy. There are "parmesan style" cheeses that don't fall under that announcement of the microchips.

Hi Jimi,
I love eating fresh fruits and veggies — and am often tempted to grab an apple or some berries and eat them — without washing them.
But in our world, at this time, most food is contaminated with pesticide residue.
A large body of evidence shows that pesticide exposure is linked to an increased risk of many chronic diseases, including cancer and type 2 diabetes. Children and pregnant women are especially vulnerable.
Choosing organic produce (or growing it yourself!) is the best solution.
But not everyone can afford organically grown food — and even some organic food can have (organic) pesticide residues. (I know! It’s terrible!)

I know, but I call it out when I find out, since most of my fellow vapers are getting food from the grocery stores. If I can help someone avoid a nanochip from cheese going into their brain and causing seizures, I'll be glad.

As for the ANTZ , and the government nannies who harass us while never doing anything to prevent harm to us by industries, and the political monkeys who look down their noses at us, I don't care. They can go to the store and buy mouse filet for all I care. And I hope it tastes like mouse to them. And gives them indigestion.
