Why Your Kidneys Are So Important

Hi There!

Those little bean-shaped organs may be small, but they play a crucial role in your overall health. Here’s how you can help them do their job with these foods for kidney health.

The kidneys play a big balancing act in your body. Aside from removing waste and excess water from the body, the kidneys even help manage blood pressure. (1) Unfortunately, the kidneys can quickly become overburdened by environmental toxins and eating an inflammatory diet.

The good news is that there are plenty of healthy foods you can eat to show your kidneys some much-needed love, giving them the boost they need to function at their best...

Foods That Support Kidney Health

1. Cucumbers

Cucumbers are ultra-hydrating, which is an excellent choice for kidney health. That’s because their high water content can help cleanse your kidneys. Cucumbers are also low in potassium, making them a kidney-friendly vegetable for those with kidney health issues. Cucumbers are low in potassium, so you can add these to your diet and enjoy them regularly.

How to add cucumbers to your diet: Dip cucumbers into bean-free hummus, or enjoy them as a fresh, light salad.

2. Cherries

This sweetly tart fruit is another excellent addition to your diet, as one study found that cherries can reduce gout risk by 35%. (5) Gout is a type of arthritis that can happen when your kidneys aren’t functioning properly, so you’ll definitely want to eat more of this healing stone fruit.

How to add cherries to your diet: Try making a smoothie with pitted cherries, coconut milk, and chia or flax seeds.

3. Cauliflower

Cruciferous veggies like cauliflower can help support your body’s ability to detoxify. Cauliflower in particular is rich in vitamin C, folate, and fiber, all of which can help ward off toxins and lessen the stress you put on your kidneys. (6)

How to add cauliflower to your diet: Roast cauliflower with honey and garlic, or pulse up some cauliflower rice as a healthy side dish.

Until next time,

Nathan Crane is an award-winning documentary filmmaker…
And he just released a new 5-minute video that reveals a hidden cause of cancer nobody is talking about.

He has interviewed HUNDREDS of cancer survivors… and many of the world’s TOP cancer scientists, integrative oncologists, and researchers…

And he shared something SHOCKING with me this morning…
You see, one question he asks people is…

“What’s the number one thing that causes cancer?”

The same surprising answer always came up.

It DEFINITELY wasn’t genetics, and it wasn't even diet.
It was this ONE surprising thing that doesn’t even seem to have a direct connection to cancer…

But it turns out, it is actually the NUMBER ONE REASON that people get lung, kidney, and breast cancer.

Read about our Cancer’s Hidden Secret right here.

Skin Rash Rebuild enrollment ends in...

mail
Hey Jim,
"I just don't know what to do at this point."
"I feel like I've tried everything. I'm exhausted."
"I'm afraid to eat because something will trigger a flare."

These three statements are the most common sentiments I hear when I jump on a call with a potential client (usually voiced in the first couple of minutes).
There is a sense of overwhelm, loneliness and frustration.
And sometimes people break down in tears.
One woman who went on to become a client (we'll call her Anna) had tried so many diets + remedies online, she literally felt like her life was over.
She couldn't point towards anything that made a huge difference.
Food had become Anna's enemy and it had caused serious friction in her home + family. She couldn't even bear the idea of going out to eat because there were too many variables.
And her doctors were fed up with her because Anna wouldn't take a biologic.
She wasn't sleeping well... and some nights, Anna wasn't sleeping at all because the itchiness was so bad. Even antihistamines couldn't get things under control.
So yeah... Anna broke down from the sheer stress of it all on that call + I just held space for her to let it out.
*heart breaking*
Because in that moment, rashes had turned Anna's life into a living hell.
And if you've really struggled like that at certain points -- you know what it's like.
Rashes can crush your spirit + steal away your hope (especially when a doctor tells you that you'll just have to manage the rashes for life).
I've spent time in those dark places going through hand eczema where I really felt certain that I was just going to be doomed.
Since you're here, you know there are things you're missing.
AKA -- the many things (via the 16 root causes I talk about) you won't hear about in the dermatologist office.
There’s a way you can short cut the process, get your questions asked, work on protocols + finally start getting results!
(All while focusing LESS on removing food -- and MORE on adding back in many things you're currently avoiding!)
I finally found a way to share with you the process I go through to not just identify the root causes, but to work through them with you. My brain turned this over for months until I had an epiphany!
So if you've been wishing you could work with me to rebuild your skin + end your rashes, now is your chance.

On Tuesday I held a webinar on the 7 Most Common Skin Rash Mistakes -- there were over 700 people registered!

I shared 5 case studies of clients that were in the same place as Anna.
If you've tried lots of random things, but you want more direction, guidance + support to make the RIGHT choices + next steps...
If you're fed up guessing + throwing darts in the dark hoping for a miracle...
If you'd love to have me personally show you the way...

I'm hosting an 8-week group program called the Skin Rash Rebuild that starts next week!

You’re welcome to join me for the journey.

🩸5 diabetes-causing habits
If you consider yourself even a little health-savvy, you probably know the basic rules for keeping your type 2 diabetes risk as low as possible: Eat right, be active, and maintain a healthy weight. But guess what? Those aren’t the only things you can do.
Believe it or not, there could be other factors at play that can up your odds for type 2. And some of them are pretty surprising. Here are six to watch for.
Going gluten-free when you don’t have to
Here’s more proof that you shouldn’t ditch the wheat, barley, and rye unless it’s truly medically necessary. People who regularly consume gluten are 13 percent less likely to develop diabetes compared to those who steer clear, found an American Heart Association study of nearly 200,000 adults.
That could be because people who avoid gluten tend to eat fewer fiber-rich whole grains, which play an important role in lowering diabetes risk. “High-fiber diets are associated with improved insulin sensitivity, reduced inflammation, and lower blood pressure and cholesterol,” says certified diabetes educator Deborah Malkoff, MS, RDN.
Cutting out coffee
There are plenty of reasons to feel good about drinking your morning mud. Including this: People who cut their coffee consumption by more than a cup per day over a four-year period were 17 percent more likely to get diabetes compared to those who didn’t make a change, according to a Harvard University study. And those who added an extra cup fared even better—lowering their diabetes risk by 11 percent. (The findings only applied to caffeinated coffee.)
Experts don’t fully understand java’s protective effects, but drinking it seems to promote steadier blood sugar levels. Just don’t nix the benefits by pouring in sugar or another sweetener, Malkoff says. If you can’t stand the taste of black, try using stevia instead.
Using mouthwash
File under weird but true: In a University of Alabama study, people who rinsed twice daily were 55 percent more likely to be diagnosed with type 2 diabetes within 3 years compared to those who never used the stuff.
More research is needed to understand the association, but mouthwash works by wiping bacteria out of your mouth—both the bad and good kind. Some of those friendly bugs are thought to play a role in blood sugar regulation, and killing them off could make it harder for your levels to stay steady, Jyothinagaram says.
Still, clean teeth and gums can support better overall health. So if an oral rinse is a regular part of your routine, talk with your dentist. She can help you weigh the pros and cons to see if using mouthwash is still the right move for you.
Eating too much salt
Excess sodium consumption can make you more likely to be overweight or develop hypertension—two big diabetes risk factors. But that’s not all. Going crazy with the salt shaker may also have a direct impact on insulin resistance, say Swedish researchers. In fact, for each extra 1,000 mg of sodium subjects consumed, their diabetes risk increased by 43 percent.
Your best bet? Try to keep your sodium intake under 2,300 mg daily, the American Heart Association recommends. If you can get below 1,500 mg, even better.
Taking statins
The meds can be an important tool for getting your cholesterol in check. But taking statins is also tied to slightly increased risk for type 2 diabetes, according to a 2010 analysis of 13 studies that looked at 91,000 participants. More recent findings, published in 2017, found that statin use upped the odds for diabetes by as much as 36 percent.
How the two are related isn’t totally clear. Having high cholesterol in itself is a risk factor for diabetes, so it could be that people who take statins are already predisposed to developing T2D. Still, it’s worth considering your options if your doctor says you need to do something about your cholesterol. “For some, lifestyle choices like eating right, exercising, and quitting smoking may be a better route,” says Jyothinagaram.
There is a way to stop your diabetes in it’s tracks, though. Millions of people are turning to this strange grape extract to reduce their blood sugar and A1C without medications.

Ever feel like you're running on empty, and even your fifth cup of coffee isn’t pulling its weight anymore? ☕

If that sounds all too familiar, allow me to introduce you to your adrenal glands. These unsung heroes might be small, but they're at the helm of pretty much everything your body does! 🤩

The "Stress Managers" of Your Body 😬🎭

Your adrenal glands are your body's equivalent to a multi-talented stage manager in a Broadway show 👯. Nestled above your kidneys, they play a crucial role in managing stress hormones like cortisol and adrenaline. Did you know these hormones used to help us flee from predators? Now they help us meet deadlines and deal with traffic jams. (1)

Burnout Isn't Just in Your Mind 😵

When life keeps piling on the stress, your adrenal glands can start to feel the weight. This can lead to something called "adrenal dysfunction," where you feel fatigued, irritable, and even suffer from pesky weight fluctuations. The surprising thing? This isn’t just a "being an adult is hard" thing; even children can experience adrenal fatigue 😢! (2)

Your Adrenal Glands: The Spice Lovers 🌿🌶️

Now for something surprising: the herbs and spices that you've been adding to your food for flavor? They could be doing wonders for your adrenal glands. For example, Ashwagandha, an ancient herb, is backed by science for its ability to modulate stress responses. And get this, it has even been researched as an anti-cancer agent! 🤯 (3)

The Untold Connection to Thyroid Health 🦋

Now this is *important*: often, when doctors diagnose thyroid issues, they often overlook the adrenal glands entirely. However, the two are deeply connected. Poor adrenal function can mimic or even exacerbate thyroid issues.

The more you know 💫! (4)

The Guide to Adrenal Royalty 📚

If you want to take adrenal health in your hands, try this free ebook: 18 Adrenal Boosting Herbs & Supplements. It's more than just a list!

it's a survival guide for the modern stress jungle 🌴!

Here's to uncovering the mystery behind those two tiny glands that run your life! 💪🌟

Cheers to a more energized you,

Hello Jimi,

A question that is often asked when patients are considering working with us is, “How does diet factor into the treatment plans?”

There are many reasons that dietary adjustments may need to be implemented as part of your treatment plan. However, this decision is very personal for each patient's combination of symptoms or root cause illnesses.

For a broader look at how food can impact our health, we find that a significant benefit can be found in eating with the seasons, and knowing how different foods impact specific organs or body systems.

On Friday, September 29th at 1pm PT | 4 pm ET, Dr. Jamie Kunkle will be presenting a webinar on the benefits of eating local seasonal foods.

The talk will cover:
  • Organ systems: when is the best time to support liver and detoxification - foods to eat in specific seasons
  • The five flavors and corresponding organs: sweet, bitter, sour, spicy, salty
  • Traditional and ancestral diets
  • Eating for individual constitutions - including histamine challenges and food allergies
  • Growing your own food and preparing for winter when local food is sparse
  • As well as theories based in traditional Chinese medicine but also tying in western philosophies.

We hope you’ll join us for How Eating Seasonally Can Support Your Healing Journey, a conversation and Q&A. Follow the link below to secure your spot today.

Mini Potato Hash
(full recipe in this email below)
Enjoy this colorful and wholesome dish as a meal or a delicious side!

Ingredients:
  • 1 1/2 lbs mini potatoes cut into small 1/2 to 1" chunks
  • 1/4 cup low-sodium vegetable broth
  • 2 medium onions chopped
  • 1/2 root celeriac peeled and grated
  • 1 medium green pepper chopped
  • 1 medium yellow pepper chopped
  • 1 cup kernel corn fresh or frozen
  • 4 leaves spinach chopped
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 2 tsp paprika
  • 1 tsp dried rosemary crumbled
  • 1 cup tomatoes halved
Directions:
  1. Bring a large pot of water to a boil and cook the potatoes for 7 to 10 minutes or until the potatoes are just starting to soften. Drain and set aside.
  2. In a large pan heat up the vegetable broth and add the onion, garlic, and celeriac root. Sauté for 5 minutes.
  3. Add the green and yellow peppers and continue to saute for another 5 to 7 minutes or until they have softened. Add a little more broth as needed so the vegetables don’t stick to the pan.
  4. Add the black pepper, paprika, rosemary and mix thoroughly.
  5. Add the cooked potatoes and corn and cook for another 5 minutes. If you are adding the tomatoes to the cooking dish add them now. If you are going to use the tomatoes as a garnish or side dish leave them for when you plate the hash.
  6. Lastly, add the spinach and stir until the leaves are wilted. Serve immediately.

NOTES: You can prepare and cook the potatoes the day before and keep in the refrigerator until you are ready to use them in the hash. You can also use other types of potato. The tomatoes and spinach can be used as a side dish with a sprinkle of lemon juice.

What Is Cardiac Rehabilitation?

By Chauncey Crandall, M.D.

Cardiac rehab is a three-month, medically supervised program that helps improve the health and the well-being of people who have heart problems.

Such programs include exercise training, specially tailored according to a doctor’s recommendation. But although there is a focus on exercise, that’s not all there is to it.

Special: Heart Surgeon's Secret to Healthy Blood Pressure

Cardiac rehab is a well-rounded program that’s been proven to work. It includes instruction on dealing with heart disease risk factors, including high blood pressure and diabetes.

Patients will also get counseling on lifestyle changes, like adopting a heart-healthy diet, stress reduction, and smoking cessation.

Depending on what type of procedure a patient has undergone, their cardiac rehab program may begin in the hospital or start after release. These programs are structured into four phases.

If a person is hospitalized, phase one usually begins in the hospital, and the other three phases are conducted on an outpatient basis. If one’s hospital stay is very short, the program can be completely done as an outpatient.

Nebulizer Therapies Benefit Lungs

Dr. David Brownstein, M.D., writes:

Nebulizing is a process by which a liquid is converted into a fine spray for inhaling. Nebulizers are commonly used by patients with lung diseases such as asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

For more than two decades, I have had patients nebulize a dilute (0.4%) solution of hydrogen peroxide and 5% Lugol’s iodine. To prepare the solution, I mix up a combination of hydrogen peroxide and saline. The patient draws off a small amount of the solution (3 cubic centimeters) and adds in 1 drop of the Lugol’s solution and nebulizes that mixture.

Special: Top Doctors Say: Your Immune Function Now More Important Than Ever

Both hydrogen peroxide and iodine have virus-killing benefits and help to oxygenate and detoxify the lungs.

I have seen many COVID-19 patients improve their breathing issues by nebulizing this solution. Sicker patients were treated with intravenous doses of vitamin C and hydrogen peroxide. (These were actually administered outside our office in order to reduce the risk of infecting other patients.)

In addition, ozone was injected in the patients’ buttocks.

Hi Jimi,
Hazelnuts are a delicious nut with a lot of health benefits. Studies show they have benefits for your heart, your gut, and your blood sugar — and they may even help to bring down chronic inflammation.
Unfortunately, the vast majority of the world’s hazelnuts are grown in ways that degrade the environment, harm farm workers, and end up in unhealthy processed foods.
Is there a way to enjoy these fabulous nuts in ways that are healthy and ethical?
Get the whole hazelnut story here.
Yours for healthy and ethical choices,
Ocean Robbins

Dear Jimi
Laughter is the best medicine. We actually have research to back up this old adage! Many studies show laughter is linked to reduced cortisol levels thus reducing the harmful effects of stress.

I was asked to comment about a recent study showing “that regular chuckling expands heart tissue and promotes the flow of oxygen in the body, thus reducing the risk of cardiac disease.”

I find these results exciting because it is something risk and cost free that anyone can implement. It's a reminder to incorporate joy and positivity in your life.

If it's good for your heart, it's good for your brain. It's about circulation and circulation is good for both. You're reducing inflammation which is bad for both.

I was at Marama this past week and took a moment to appreciate the environment there. Everyone is so great. The food smells so good, it looks so good, it tastes so good. The garden is so beautiful. It is such a great spot and I’m just so proud of it.

I’m proud that we incorporate joy and positivity in daily life at Marama and Clear Mind Center. Games are part of our daily schedule and they are a great opportunity to create laughter.

Here are some suggestions to create laughter in your life courtesy of HelpGuide.org:
  • Watch a funny movie, TV show, or YouTube video.
  • Invite friends or co-workers out to a comedy club.
  • Read the funny pages.
  • Seek out funny people.
  • Share a good joke or a funny story.
  • Check out your bookstore's humor section.
  • Host game night with friends.
  • Play with a pet.
  • Go to a “laughter yoga” class.
  • Goof around with children.
  • Do something silly.
  • Make time for fun activities (e.g. bowling, miniature golfing, karaoke).

If you find yourself struggling to laugh, HelpGuide.org offers these suggestions for developing your sense of humor:
  • Laugh at yourself.
  • Attempt to laugh at situations rather than bemoan them.
  • Surround yourself with reminders to lighten up.
  • Remember funny things that happen.
  • Don't dwell on the negative.
  • Find your inner child.
  • Deal with stress.
  • Don't go a day without laughing.

I challenge you to find laughter every day this week and spread that joy with someone you care for.
