Methods to De-Stress Your Body

Experts recommend taking 10 minutes several times during your day to de-stress your body. Some effective exercises to relieve tension in your body can be done standing or sitting at your desk.
Meditation expert Elliott S. Dacher, M.D., says that a simple breathing technique can eliminate tension in minutes, becoming a powerful tool against stress.

"Take a long, slow inhale and forcefully blow out all the air through your mouth, holding your exhale as long as it's comfortable," Dacher explains. "Repeat until all the tension clears from your brain."
Heather Berg, a registered yoga teacher from South Florida, says that we keep a lot of tension in the upper body from all the hunching and slouching we do over our devices.
An easy exercise that can help, whether sitting or standing: "Roll your shoulders backwards in big circles, lifting them up to your ears on an inhale and then squeezing the shoulder blades together on your exhale," Berg says. She recommends repeating it five times.
We hold a lot of tension in our hips, and sitting at a desk exacerbates that stress, says Berg. An easy yet powerful stretch is called the "Figure 4."
Bring your right ankle over your left knee, keeping the foot flexed. If you feel that's deep enough, stop there, but otherwise gently lean forward to enhance the stretch. Repeat on the other side, holding each leg for five breaths.

Omega-3 Helps Reduce Brain Inflammation

Dr. Russell Blaylock, M.D., writes:


Virtually all neurodegenerative disorders are the result of low-grade brain inflammation triggered by activation of the brain’s main immune cells — called microglia. These cells are normally in what is called a “resting” state. But actually, they are quite active, mainly making repairs and removing debris that has collected in the brain as cells die off.

It’s a continuous cleanup operation. When activated, these microglia release an assortment of inflammatory factors (cytokines, chemokines, and interferons) as well as glutamate (the excitatory amino acid) into the fluid space outside brain cells. Combined with inflammation, this causes a very destructive process I have termed immunoexcitotoxicity.

Immunoexcitotoxicity occurs with all neurodegenerative diseases, as well as in strokes, trauma, autoimmune diseases, and infections of the central nervous system. It is an ongoing process that lasts for a very long period and accelerates destruction.

Sometimes the immune reaction in the brain and spinal cord is much more intense and rapidly occurring, with greater destruction over a short period of time — as we see with some autoimmune diseases as well as encephalitis.

A number of studies have shown that DHA significantly reduces the destructive effects of neurodegenerative diseases. The most popular forms of DHA are the ethyl ester DHA and triglyceride DHA. Newer studies found that triglyceride DHA was far more effective for lowering inflammatory cytokines and reducing nervous system damage.

After Alzheimer’s, the second most common neurodegenerative disease is Parkinson’s. One of the primary destructive factors in Parkinson’s disease is a loss of mitochondrial energy production. Along with reducing brain inflammation, omega-3 oils increase mitochondrial energy production.

DHA has also been shown to reduce some of the complications of the Parkinson’s drug L-DOPA (levodopa), including dyskinesia (abnormality or impairment of voluntary movement).

Omega-3 oils have also been shown to reduce the damage to cells in the brain’s substantia nigra, the site of most Parkinson’s destruction.

An additional benefit of supplementing with omega-3 oils is reducing depression and cognitive decline, both of which are common problems seen in Parkinson’s patients.

One of our absolute favorites is the Sour Cream & Onion Dip

It transforms any veggie from boring to irresistible.

This is the dip I love to make for parties too...

Your veggie tray will become the STAR of the party.

Kids will actually fight over the radishes (yes, radishes!), and the adults will keep asking for the recipe.

Give this a try and you'll see what I mean:

Food Babe's Sour Cream & Onion Dip Recipe

Makes 1-2 cups

Ingredients:

  • 1 to 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 large yellow onion, sliced thin
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • ¼ teaspoon sea salt
  • ½ teaspoon dried thyme
  • 1 tablespoon balsamic vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon coconut aminos
  • 1 cup plain Greek yogurt
Instructions:

  1. Heat the oil in a sauté pan over medium heat. Add the onions and let them cook for 4 to 5 minutes.
  2. Add the remaining ingredients except the yogurt. Turn the heat to low and cook for 12 to 15 minutes or until the onions have caramelized. Let the mixture cool.
  3. In a bowl, add the yogurt. Once the onions have cooled, add them to the bowl and mix well.
  4. Serve with veggie sticks or desired accompaniment.
