170,000+ Demand USDA reject proposal to release genetically engineered American Chestnut into wild forests

More than 170,000 people, as well as more than 440 organizations worldwide, have risen up to oppose the release of the defective GE chestnut tree known as Darling 54 (D54) into wild forests. This response was generated during the USDA’s 45-day public comment period that ended on July 21, 2025 regarding the petition to deregulate the GE tree, submitted by the SUNY-ESF (State University of New York-College of Environmental Science and Forestry).
Anne Peterman, executive director of Global Justice Ecology Project, said, “Opposition to the release of GE trees into our forests is growing in incredible ways. People are standing up to clearly reject, not just the USDA’s plan to unleash an unproven and unstable GE tree into wild forests, but also this first-ever attempt to allow a genetically engineered, sexually reproducing plant to spread in the wild where it could contaminate wild relatives.
The ecological risks of this for-profit scheme are far too great, and the science is fundamentally flawed.” The American Chestnut Foundation (TACF) was a long-time partner with SUNY-ESF to develop the GE American chestnut, but withdrew when it became evident that the trees had serious problems. U.S. MAHA Commission succumbs to pesticide industry pressure

The threat of any new restrictions being placed on the use of dangerous pesticides spurred a massive and successful lobbying effort by the chemical industry and commodity growers’ groups, alongside their friends in Congress and the EPA, to force the commission to back off. Instead of action, the recommendations direct the EPA and Big Ag to work together to convince the public to have confidence in pesticide review processes, which are broadly criticized for scientific inadequacy and excessive industry influence. It also encourages research into new pesticide application technologies.
“Despite the administration’s promises to MAHA and the reality that using a billion pounds of pesticides in the US each year is a major threat to public health, pesticide interests again prevailed in protecting their profits,” said Lori Ann Burd, environmental health director at the Center for Biological Diversity. “While Big Ag won this battle, the powerful grassroots movement of millions of Americans who know that these chemicals are making us sick will continue fighting to protect their families from pesticides like glyphosate and atrazine.”
More than 300 million pounds of glyphosate and 70 million pounds of atrazine are used by U.S. farmers annually. Thousands of lawsuits have been filed by cancer victims who used Roundup, which contains glyphosate. Atrazine, a powerful endocrine disruptor that contaminates the drinking water of 40 million Americans, is so toxic it is banned in more than 60 countries. The United States allows use of 85 pesticides that have been banned or are being phased out in the European Union, China or Brazil. Continue reading here.

"Over the past two decades, Chile has exported more than US$2.3 billion in biotechnological seeds. The country is a site for research, development, and multiplication trials of many genetically modified (GM) corn, soybean, and canola varieties that are grown worldwide, and it is now also working with new gene-edited crops. This role has developed through a mix of scientific research, regulation, industry, and farmer participation. The Mediterranean diet upgrade that could keep your brain young​

The difference between faster and slower brain aging might come down to what’s in your mug.

New research reveals that a green Mediterranean diet—featuring green tea and a nutrient-packed aquatic plant called Mankai (duckweed)—may slow brain aging.

Over 18 months, 294 participants followed one of three eating plans: standard healthy guidelines, a traditional Mediterranean diet with walnuts, or the enhanced “green” Mediterranean version. The green group also consumed 3-4 cups of green tea daily, drank Mankai shakes, and reduced red and processed meat.

Researchers used MRI scans to measure “brain age”—how old the brain appeared compared to actual age. Those on the green Mediterranean diet showed the most favorable brain aging patterns. Blood tests also revealed that the green group had significant drops in Galectin-9, a protein tied to inflammation and faster brain decline. The traditional Mediterranean diet showed smaller improvements, while healthy guidelines produced minimal change.

Scientists believe the anti-inflammatory compounds in green tea, Mankai, and walnuts are key. While more research is needed, it's remarkable that simple dietary tweaks might help keep our brains younger at the cellular level.​

Here's what's really going on in your body:
When stress hits (whether it's work deadlines, family drama, or just the mental load of keeping everyone's life together), your cortisol spikes. This triggers intense cravings for quick energy – usually sugar and processed carbs.

Your body thinks it needs fuel to handle the "emergency," even though the emergency is just your teenager's attitude or your boss's impossible deadline.

Instead, here's what actually works:
1. Meet your nutrition needs BEFORE the cravings hit

Those chocolate cravings? Often your body crying out for magnesium. Cheese cravings? Could be low calcium. When you're properly nourished, the desperate cravings lose their grip.

2. Tune into your hunger cues

Waiting until you're starving actually increases stress hormones and makes you more likely to grab whatever's convenient (usually not the good stuff).

3. Remove the temptation

I know this sounds obvious, but if the chips aren't in your pantry, you can't stress-eat them at 3pm. Replace them with pumpkin seeds, almonds, or pre-cut veggies.

4. Practice emotional stress management

Simple belly breathing for 30 seconds can shift you out of that frantic "I need food NOW" state and back into your rational brain.

5. Keep your blood sugar stable

This is the game-changer. When your blood sugar is on a rollercoaster, your cravings will be too. Balanced meals with protein, healthy fats, and fiber keep you steady.

Stress Increases Women's Risk for Irregular Heartbeat

Postmenopausal women who are stressed, depressed, or have trouble sleeping may face an increased risk of atrial fibrillation (AFib), a heart arrhythmia that can cause serious problems over time, according to a study by the Women’s Health Initiative.

Among study participants, the higher the women scored on two measures of "stress" and "strain," the greater their risk of developing AFib over the next 10 years.

Two specific factors — stressful life events and insomnia — showed the strongest connection to the heart condition.

"Don't let anyone tell you it's 'just' stress," said Dr. Nieca Goldberg, a cardiologist and clinical associate professor at NYU Grossman School of Medicine in New York City. "Our psychological health impacts our physical health."

The researchers focused on more than 83,700 women between the ages of 50 and 79 who were free from AFib when they entered the study. At that point, the women were asked questions about their health, lifestyle, and psychological well-being.

Over the next decade, about one-quarter of those participants developed AFib. The team found that two distinct "clusters" of psychological factors were related to the risk of a new AFib diagnosis — even after they accounted for physical health conditions. The clusters were dubbed "stress" and "strain," and for every additional point the women scored in those groupings, their average risk of AFib inched up by 3%-7%.
