'No silver bullet' — pest resistance threatens corn's newest biotech defense, study warns

Corn rootworms — pests responsible for billions of dollars in yearly crop losses — are evolving resistance that weakens even the latest biotechnology controls, according to a new study from the University of Arizona (U of A). The research team analyzed extensive field data collected over the past two decades in 12 previous studies, including millions of rootworms evaluated across the Corn Belt.
“The results consistently show that in fields where resistance to Bt has evolved, the combination of Bt and RNA interference provides less protection from rootworm damage,” said Bruce Tabashnik, lead author on the study and head of the U of A Department of Entomology. “This isn't lab data,” he added. “This is real-world, on-the-ground field data gathered from university and industry research across multiple states.” Continue reading about the study's findings here.

Nigeria: Farmers, CSOs Urge NAFDAC to Ban GMO Cultivation Nationwide

Farmers and civil society organizations in Bakassi Local Council of Cross River State have renewed calls on the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) to ban the importation and cultivation of Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs) in Nigeria. They warned that continued reliance on GMOs poses serious threats to human health, soil fertility, and the nation’s food sovereignty.
The appeal was made during a sensitization and training session organized by the Health of Mother Earth Foundation (HOMEF), in collaboration with the Peace Point Development Foundation (PPDF) and the Bakassi Returning IDP Community Association (IDPCA). The event focused on educating farmers about the dangers of GMOs and promoting sustainable, organic agricultural practices. Director of Programmes at HOMEF, Joyce Brown, explained that many farmers remain unaware of the long-term implications of GMOs. Continue reading here.

How Do GMOs Impact Farmers and Farmworkers?

The main beneficiaries of the GMO experiment are the corporations that develop, patent and sell GMO seeds and their related chemicals. Restrictive use agreements prohibit farmers from saving seeds, while biodiversity loss and declining soil health makes farms more dependent on chemical “solutions." It’s a system designed to serve shareholder dividends, not people or the planet.
For as long as we've been practicing agriculture, farmers have held tremendous expertise. They are seed breeders and stewards, passing down irreplaceable knowledge about their trade. GMO seeds, once marketed to farmers as agricultural solutions, erode this autonomy in several ways.
Discussions and debates about GMOs often focus on the impacts on everyday shoppers and eaters. However, some of the most profound effects occur much earlier in the food chain. What do GMO crops mean for the people who produce our food? Read more here.

Europe: Who doesn’t want new GMOs to be traceable and labelled?​

Certain big food producers and their interest groups, gathered under the umbrella lobby group FoodDrinkEurope, are adamant there should not be any “additional requirements”, such as traceability and labelling requirements, for new GMOs that are claimed to be “conventional-like”, in the food chain. The same goes for big agrichemical companies, gathered under the lobby group CropLife, which have expressed “strong concerns... about the possible introduction of unjustified, mandatory labelling requirements for conventional-like NGT plants and products”. FoodDrinkEurope members include Cargill, Coca-Cola, Mars, and Kraft-Heinz. Signatories to CropLife’s demand for no traceability and labelling include farming lobby group Copa-Cogeca, biotech industry lobby group EuropaBio, and FEFAC (European Feed Manufacturers' Federation). Think of inflammation as a wildfire. When it gets out of control, it can spread, grow, and consume everything around it. In your body, inflammation acts like fuel for your prostate cancer cells, making them grow and spread faster. Research shows that this activity relies on the presence of inflammatory markers that include Nuclear Factor Kappa B (NF-Kappa B), cyclooxygenase (COX), and Interleukins (IL-6). An inflammatory microenvironment promotes prostate cancer progression and creates a continuous loop that stimulates a more aggressive stage. Interfering with the production of these inflammatory chemicals makes prostate cancer cells vulnerable and may reduce the formation and progression of cancer cells. Numerous potent botanicals are known to lower NF-Kappa B, COX, and IL-6 inflammatory and cancer-promoting chemicals in the body: Curcumin, Boswellia, Andrographis, and Magnolia bark. Omega-3 fatty acids, like in fish oils, also lower inflammation by inhibiting COX.

What is your immune system, and how does it work against prostate cancer?



When fighting prostate cancer, your body's first defense is your immune system. The part of your body's defenses involved in detecting and attacking cancer cells are natural killer (NK) cells. In one study, men with a low NK activity value had a five-times higher chance of prostate cancer diagnosis to biopsy. I came across the Taoist prayer below at just the right time a couple weeks back, on a morning that felt particularly challenging.

As a global community, many of us struggle to maintain our sense of sanity in the midst of the chaos, suffering, and unrest that we see on the news and in real life.

Yes, it's important that we acknowledge the truth of what is happening in the world around us, but we also need to give ourselves the space (and permission) to simply be alive.

We can turn to the wisdom-keepers of our collective past to help jog our memory on how to do this.

I printed this out and taped it to our bathroom mirror, so I would see it every morning. I hope this prayer is helpful for you too!

All we need is the morning.
As long as there is sunrise,
then there is the possibility
that we can face all of our misfortunes,
celebrate all our blessings,
and live all our endeavors as human beings.
Spirituality is something that has become
necessary in these troubled times.
Yet it is inherently superfluous.
We need it to remind ourselves,
