Eat Blueberries for Brain Health

Dr. David Brownstein, M.D., writes:


For years, blueberries have been studied for their ability to improve cognitive function. Researchers looked at 11 studies of blueberries, including those conducted with children and those with adults and found that blueberry ingestion improved cognitive functions including delayed memory and executive function in children. In older healthy and mildly cognitively impaired adults, it improved delayed memory, executive function, and psychomotor function.

Executive function refers to skills such as paying attention, organizing, planning, and prioritizing as well as starting and completing tasks and regulating emotions.

Studies have also shown that blueberry intake reduces the risk of diabetes, cancer, heart disease, and cognitive decline.

Blueberries contain flavonoids. There are more than 6,000 types of flavonoids, and blueberries contain many different kinds. Scientists think that may be why they are so beneficial.

Blueberries aid memory better than any pharmaceutical product on the market. The medicines prescribed for cognitive problems such as those associated with Alzheimer’s disease are a disaster; they simply do not work. Furthermore, they are too expensive and are associated with serious adverse health effects.

To avoid cognitive decline and treat brain issues, my advice is to eat a whole foods diet, free of refined sugar, flour, salt, and oils.

And eat flavonoid-containing foods like blueberries on a daily basis. Your brain will appreciate it.

Melissa was 51, sharp as a tack, had done more research on her own health than most people ever will.

Currently, human cadaveric islets are classified as “drugs” in the United States. Because of this classification, there are barriers that have effectively blocked clinical islet transplantation in the US, restricting treatment options for people with diabetes.​
US S 3105 would solve this issue by changing how cadaveric islet cells for diabetes transplants are regulated so they are treated as organs rather than drugs. This would greatly reduce red tape and make cadaveric islet readily available for diabetics who need treatment. US S 3105, the Increase Support for Life‑saving Endocrine Transplantation (ISLET) Act, would change how human cadaveric islet cells for diabetes transplants are regulated so they are treated as organs rather than drugs or lab‑grown tissue products. The bill amends the Public Health Service Act’s definition of “organ” to explicitly include “human cadaveric islets,” authorizing HRSA and the national organ transplant network to manage islet allocation and oversight under the same framework used for kidneys, pancreases, and other organs. It simultaneously prohibits the Department of Health and Human Services from regulating cadaveric islets as drugs under the Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act, as biologics, or as human cells/tissue products (HCT/Ps), and directs the Secretary to update all relevant regulations within one year and report to Congress within six months on implementation progress. The goal is to remove FDA drug‑approval barriers that have effectively blocked clinical islet transplantation in the US, while placing these procedures in accredited organ‑transplant centers with existing safety and follow‑up systems.​

Over the last few emails we've been looking at the patterns your nervous system learned - the adaptations that became automatic, that started to feel like personality. Those patterns have a physical signature. One of the clearest places you can see it - and feel it - is in your breath.

There's something your breath is doing right now that you probably haven't noticed.

It might be shallow - moving mostly in the upper chest rather than the belly. It might be slightly faster than it needs to be. You might even be holding it intermittently, a second or two at a time, without realizing it. Most people are. Most people have been for years.

Breathing changes under stress. That's not a problem - it's the system working exactly as designed. Short, fast, upper-chest breathing mobilizes you for action. It's appropriate for a genuine emergency.

The problem is what happens when that pattern becomes your default. When it's not responding to a crisis but simply how you breathe - at your desk, in traffic, reading an email, lying in bed at night.

Shallow, upper-chest breathing doesn't just reflect a stressed nervous system. It actively maintains one. The body reads its own breathing pattern as a signal. Short breaths at the top of the chest tell the system: still not safe. Which produces more tension. Which produces more shallow breathing. The loop runs quietly in the background, all day, and most people never see it.

You might recognize some of what this produces: the anxiety that seems to arrive out of nowhere. The waves of low-grade panic without an obvious trigger. The 3am wake-ups with a racing mind and no clear reason. The fatigue that sleep doesn't fix. The sense of being perpetually on edge even when nothing is actually wrong.

A significant amount of that is breath. Not all of it. But more than most people realize.

This is also why so many health interventions only partially work. The gut protocols, the sleep hygiene, the stress management practices - they're all operating inside a system that's running a breathing pattern that keeps the stress response lit. Fix the inputs without addressing the pattern underneath, and you're working against yourself.

The good news is that this is one of the most accessible things to actually change. Not through techniques or sessions - though those have their place - but through starting to notice what's already happening.

I'm about to tell you something that may seem hard to believe:



Your brain symptoms are not coming from your brain.



Brain fog, memory lapses, anxiety/depression, and fatigue are primarily driven by gut and immune issues.



And the science backs this up.



Numerous studies have confirmed that what we experience as brain fog, that heavy, slow, can't-find-your-words feeling, is almost always a downstream effect of gut dysfunction.

We know the immune system is the key to fighting illness, but what we are learning is that it is also important for helping us live longer, regardless of the threat it might be fighting.

Immune resilience is the term for the ability of the immune system to rapidly launch attacks that defend against infectious invaders such as viruses. But it includes how well the body responds to aging or other health conditions while keeping potentially damaging inflammation under wraps.

To look at the role of immune resilience, an international team of researchers examined multiple studies on immune response using two patterns: one that looked at the immune response according to a pattern of survival, and the other associated with death.

Among their findings, the researchers discovered that while immune resilience generally declines with age, some people maintain higher levels for reasons that aren’t yet known. Some people also maintain higher levels of immune resilience despite the presence of inflammatory stress such as HIV infection or acute COVID-19 disease.

While people of all ages can show high or low immune resilience, the study found that higher levels are more common in females than males.

The findings suggest that there’s a lot more to learn about why people differ in their ability to fight off infections and chronic illness. With further research, it may be possible to develop methods to encourage or restore immune resilience as a way of improving general health.
