The 5 WORST Foods for Sleep

The following 5 foods cause significant sleep disturbance and lead to poor sleep quality, as a result. If you're currently suffering from restless nights, insomnia, or poor quality sleep, please consider removing these five foods from your diet, removing electronic devices from your bedroom, and avoiding all other activities in your bedroom outside of sleep and sex.

The more you "purpose" your room for sleep, the greater your body becomes trained for sleep. You'll want to consider avoiding late night exercise, stimulating conversations before bedtime, and writing down anything on your mind (i.e. making a list you can revisit in the morning) before bedtime, as good sleep hygiene.

Outside of the foods you eat, the most common culprits are electronics, too much light entering the room, poor air quality, excessive thoughts that circle in the mind (hence, writing them down), anchors such as work, reading, or arguments that take place in the bedroom, and caffeine consumption later in the day.

We sincerely hope that you find this report useful. And please don't forget to read until the end for our #1 most important sleep tip to increase your quality of sleep and help you fall back asleep more easily when you wake up.

Sleep Sabotaging Food #1:

  • White Bread
Inflammation takes priority over the normal healing process that your body undergoes while sleeping. In other words, if your body is inflamed, it's trying to reduce inflammation all night long, rather than imbibing (filling) with fluid to heal joints, your digestive tract, your brain, and your heart.

A busy body while you sleep is a restless body, so even if you're able to fall asleep, you're likely to experience low quality sleep throughout the night.

Sleep Sabotaging Food #2:

  • Milk Chocolate
Not only does chocolate contain caffeine, but milk chocolate is loaded with processed sugar. Processed sugar is bad for your brain, affects your hormones, and leads towards sleep deprivation. Essentially, an ounce of milk chocolate now is a pound of poor sleep later.

Sleep Sabotaging Food #3:

  • French Fries
Fried foods are heavy on the body, difficult to digest, and disturb the quality of sleep. This can be deceiving, because it's easy to fall asleep after eating fatty, fried foods. The only thing is, you're not really resting... so it's a bit of an illusion.

Sleep Sabotaging Food #4:

  • Fried Chicken
While many people find fried chicken to be a delicious treat, it's both inflammatory and heavy to digest. The inflammation from the bread crumbs (gluten) + the fried-factor make your body inflamed, your digestive tract swollen, and your body unable to truly rest.

Sleep Sabotaging Food #5:

  • Tofu
Tofu's effect on sleep depends on when it is eaten, as it contains both sleep-promoting and potentially sleep-disrupting compounds. Eating tofu earlier in the day can be beneficial because it is a good source of tryptophan, an amino acid that helps produce the sleep hormone melatonin. However, fermented soy products like aged or heavily processed tofu should be avoided close to bedtime to avoid excessive brain activity and delayed sleep.

Why to avoid tofu before bed

  • Tyramine content: Fermented and aged soy products like some types of tofu, miso, and soy sauce can contain high levels of tyramine, an amino acid that stimulates the release of norepinephrine, a compound that increases brain activity and can interfere with sleep.
  • Protein timing: While tofu is a good protein source, consuming high-protein meals too close to bedtime can sometimes block the brain's ability to produce serotonin and can lead to difficulty sleeping.
As you can see, meal timing affects sleep. This can be especially important when it comes to eating magnesium-rich foods, such as leafy greens, legumes, nuts, seeds, and whole grains. Magnesium is probably the #1 most important mineral when it comes to sleep. It also helps with bone health, digestion, exercise tolerance, and heart health. Plus, one specific form of magnesium is known to cross the blood-brain-barrier, and it's called 'Magnesium Threonate', which supports better brain health.

The main challenge is that over 70% of Americans eat a Magnesium-deficient diet... which is why many doctors are now recommending you take a magnesium supplement.

And just as meal timing affects whether tofu makes you sleep better or worse, so does the timing with supplements like magnesium. Magnesium competes with calcium, so you never want to take magnesium while eating food (as many foods contain calcium). Instead, take Magnesium first thing in the morning or last thing at night to avoid this mineral competition.

To give you a bit more information surrounding which minerals you may want to supplement, perhaps the two most important minerals to consider are:

  • Zinc -- helps boost immune function, reduce swelling, improve skin health, improve age-related vision deficits...
  • Magnesium -- improves sleep, brain health, mood, heart health, blood sugar regulation, bone health, digestion, nerve and muscle function, and exercise performance...

There is a lot of conversation about movement and brain health.
Most of it focuses on how much movement matters. And it does.
But there is another side to this that gets less attention. Your brain is constantly receiving information from your body about how it is moving. The quality of those movement signals shapes things like focus, mood, and mental clarity in ways that are easy to miss until they shift.
When the body is carrying unnecessary tension or moving around old compensations, the brain registers that as a kind of background noise. A low-level signal that something is slightly off. Over time that adds up.
When movement becomes more efficient and the body stops working against itself, that noise quiets. People often notice they feel clearer without being able to explain exactly why.
Doctor Robbie's Full Body Fix is a free 5-day experience built around exactly this kind of correction.
Simple, focused, and designed to help your body send cleaner signals.

MONDAY MOTIVATION

April 27th, 2026

🔬 SCIENCE SNAPSHOT
Bees have mind-boggling communication skills when it comes to telling each other about food. They do what’s called a “waggle dance” to share direction and distance with other bees in the hive. Their movement is a form of speaking to each other, sharing information. It’s one of the clearest examples of non-human communication systems, and honestly a miracle of mathematics. CLICK HERE or the VIDEO above to see exactly how bees use dance as language.
🩺 HEALTH HACK
Your body can generate vitamin D from sunlight, but how much you produce depends on factors like time of day, latitude, and even skin tone. It’s one of the few nutrients that shifts based on your environment. This quick guide on what influences your vitamin D levels helps put it into perspective.
🏷️ LABEL DECODER
“Unsweetened” can be misleading. It doesn’t always mean no-sugar, just that no sugar was added. The product can still contain naturally occurring sugars depending on the ingredients. If you want to better understand how this shows up on labels, this breakdown of what “added sugars” actually means is helpful.

🧭 WILDERNESS SURVIVAL
You’ve probably heard that moss grows on the north side of trees. It sounds useful, but it’s not reliable. Moss grows wherever moisture and shade are present, which can vary wildly. This quick read on common navigation myths outdoors might save you from trusting the wrong signal.
🤔 DID YOU KNOW?
Bananas release a natural gas called ethylene as they ripen, which speeds up ripening in nearby fruits. That’s why one banana can quietly change everything in a fruit bowl. If you’re curious how that process works, THIS explanation of ethylene and fruit ripening connects the dots.

🏋️ The Hidden Thief Stealing Your Strength

You know that moment when you catch yourself moving more carefully than you used to? Taking the stairs slower, bracing when you stand, or making that “oof” sound getting out of a chair? A lot of people assume that’s just part of getting older. Robbie Stahl says it often isn’t.
After 30 years of studying movement and mobility, Robbie found that many people who age poorly fall into what he calls “The Cascade.” It starts with one small imbalance in the body, then your body keeps compensating until stiffness, pain, poor sleep, and low energy start stacking up.
What’s interesting is that most conventional approaches only chase symptoms. Robbie’s work focuses on the root cause.
In his 5-day intensive, The Full Body Fix, he teaches gentle, precise movements designed to help your body realign and move the way it was meant to again.
People say they notice:
  • less stiffness and chronic pain
  • better energy and mobility
  • smoother, more confident movement
  • relief even after feeling like nothing else worked
This isn’t about punishing workouts or spending hours in the gym. It’s about small shifts that can change how your body feels day to day.

Focusing on Chronic Disease

On this week's episode of With the Wind, Dr. Paul is joined by Liz Mumper, M.D., a pediatrician with 45 years of clinical experience, founder of the Rimland Center for Integrative Medicine, and a leading educator of clinicians through MAPS Medical Academy and Pediatric Special Needs. Dr. Mumper and Dr. Paul take a broad look at the dramatic rise of chronic illness in children — what's driving it, what the clinical record shows, and what families can do to protect their children's health.
Over the course of their conversation, Dr. Mumper draws on decades of patient care to examine the forces reshaping childhood health — from the surge in autism, diabetes, and autoimmune conditions to the role of environmental toxins, diet, and medical decision-making. The discussion is grounded in clinical observation and framed for parents who want to understand what has changed and why it matters.

"I can't think of an example where the unvaccinated child was not the healthier sibling. They typically did not develop these chronic illnesses that we're talking about in terms of eczema and asthma and autism." — Liz Mumper, M.D.

In This Episode, Dr. Mumper Shares:

  • The shift from acute to chronic illness in pediatrics over the past three decades — and what the numbers on autism, diabetes, and autoimmune conditions actually show
  • Pre-conception and early childhood preparation: nutrition, toxin reduction, and key supplementation benchmarks including optimal vitamin D levels
  • Clinical concerns about vaccine administration during pregnancy and infancy, and what patient chart reviews revealed about health outcomes in vaccinated versus unvaccinated siblings
  • Environmental toxin reduction: practical guidance on lead, mold, pesticides, diet, and ultra-processed foods Why acetaminophen deserves more caution than it typically receives — and its effect on the body's primary antioxidant defense system

Tomorrow, Tuesday April 28 at 11am Mountain Time, I will be live for a one-hour webinar called Leading From Within: A New Way Forward: For Healers and Leaders Who Sense There’s Another Way to Lead and Live as AI Changes Everything.

Most people who join me are thoughtful, capable, and deeply committed to their work. They show up for others in meaningful ways. At the same time, there is often a quieter awareness underneath everything else—a sense that life and leadership could feel more aligned, more steady, more natural.

That awareness rarely asks for attention in a loud way. It waits.
This conversation gives you a place to meet it directly.

Sallena Pool, our Director and Chief Experience Officer, will be asking me the questions she hears most often from healers and leaders at a turning point — and I will answer from 30 years of lived practice and transmission, not theory.

During this hour, I will speak to what creates that inner division so many healers and leaders experience, and I will guide a simple practice so you can feel a shift in your body instead of trying to think your way through it. You will experience a Wisdom Healing Qigong transmission that you can feel in your body and bring into your week immediately.

You may have seen info about this already, and something in you noticed it. There may have been a brief moment where it felt relevant before your attention moved to everything else that needed you. That moment matters more than it seems. If something in you recognized this when you first saw the invitation, stay with that.

You’re welcome to join me. One hour. Tuesday. Free.

A brand-new episode of Your Mind, Your Rules is here, and my next guest needs no introduction…
I’m joined by Davina McCall, whose approach to living authentically and vigorously is nothing short of inspiring.
She has of course been a beloved fixture on our screens for decades - but it’s her tireless advocacy for women’s health and her willingness to openly share her journey of resilience that truly define her impact.
In this episode, Davina and I trace her story from the earliest moments of self-doubt as a child through the personal hurdles of addiction and surrender, into the powerful recovery and grounded confidence she has today. She doesn’t sugarcoat the reality of self-love as the real lifelong romance, while also delving deeper into what it means to consider one’s self to be a "wellness-making machine".
We discussed so many aspects of life that you’ll instantly relate to, with insights, lessons, and the rules Davina uses to maintain her unmistakable zest for life.
If you’re ready for inspiration that cuts deeper than the usual story, you’ll want to watch the full episode below.

Natural Ways to Strengthen the Heart

Dr. Jacob Teitelbaum, M.D., writes:

The heart is the hardest-working muscle in the body. With heart failure, the muscle is weakening. With angina, there may not be heart muscle weakness, but increasing heart efficiency can decrease its work and therefore the tendency for chest pain and abnormal heart rhythms as well.

Fortunately, there are many natural ways to improve heart muscle function.

The key treatments for these heart problems that I use in my practice, including for abnormal heart rhythms and angina, but especially for congestive heart failure, are:

Special: More Than 50% of Older Americans Fail to Get Enough Magnesium

Ribose. This powder that looks and tastes like sugar is a key to energy production in the body — including the heart. A study using ribose for treatment of fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome showed that it increased energy an average of 45%. One of the study participants had atrial fibrillation. As is commonly seen in practice, his abnormal heart rhythm cleared up after only three weeks on the ribose, and he was able to come off his heart medications.

Coenzyme Q10. Take 200 mg to 400 mg per day. This nutrient is especially critical for anyone on cholesterol-lowering medications, even if there is no heart problem, as these medications cause CoQ10 deficiency, and this nutrient is critical for energy production. In fact, many physicians suspect that a major cause for the increasing epidemic of heart failure is that people have been on these cholesterol-lowering medications.

Magnesium. Take 200 mg per day. Magnesium not only increases your heart’s muscle strength, but also markedly decreases the risk of abnormal heart rhythms. I recommend almost everyone take this nutrient, as it is made to supply outstanding overall nutritional support. After several months, as you “fill your tank” nutritionally, you may find that a lower dose feels better.

There’s a point where trying to eat perfectly stops being helpful. Not because nutrition doesn’t matter, but because the definition of “perfect” tends to get narrower over time.
Foods get cut out, rules get added, and what started as a way to support your wellbeing slowly turns into something more rigid, controlled, and harder to sustain.
The body does not thrive on restriction alone.
This changes digestion, microbiome diversity, and even how your immune system responds to foods that were never an issue before.
At that point, the conversation shifts.
This group of 40 clinicians and researchers is diving deep into this idea of inflammation, and the actual origins. Foods can inflame you, sure, but what is keeping your body in a perpetual loop of inflammation?
You can explore the docuseries here.
There’s also a short report included that outlines three factors that quietly accelerate decline, and one of them tends to show up in how people approach dieting more than they realize!
So thankful that you're making an investment in your health, your life and yourself.
Because health means everything,

We must act now! Tell the House Rules Committee that we do not support pesticide immunity shields.

mail
Jimi,
The 2026 Farm Bill (HR 7567) is currently being discussed in the U.S. House Rules Committee, and there are three sections we must remove. Sections 10205, 10206, and 10207 of the current bill aim to federally shield manufacturers from liability in failure-to-warn lawsuits.
MAHA believes Americans must hold corporations accountable when the regulatory system fails.
Three amendments (#141, #29, and #301) aim to strike the launguage from the bill that would effectively grant pesticide manufacturers a sweeping immunity shield for failure-to-warn lawsuits and preempt state and local authority over pesticide regulations.
We must make our voices heard to the Rules Committee today! We urge you to call these Committee members and leave a message expressing support for Amendments 141, 29, and 301 to the 2026 Farm Bill. Here are their phone numbers:
  • Rep. Austin Scott - (202)-225-6531
  • Rep. Chip Roy - (202)-225-4236
  • Rep. Virginia Foxx - (202)-225-2071
  • Rep. Michelle Fischbach - (202)-225-2165
  • Rep. Ralph Norman - (202)-225-5501
  • Rep. Erin Houchin - (202)-225-5315
  • Rep. Nick Langworthy - (202)-225-3161
  • Rep. Morgan Griffith - (202)-225-3861
  • Rep. Brian Jack - (202)-225-5901
  • Rep. Teresa Leger Fernandez - (202)-225-6190
  • Rep. Jim McGovern - (202)-225-6101
  • Rep. Joe Neguse - (202)-225-2161
  • Rep. Mary Gay Scanlon - (202)-225-2011
If you'd prefer to email your representatives instead, the MAHA Action legislative tracker makes it simple: Just click the button below, enter your information on the right side of the webpage, and click “Send Message”! It takes less than 2 minutes to send a message showing your support for these critical ammendments.

Amendment Summaries + Why They Matter:

AMENDMENT SUMMARY

Sections 10205, 10206 & 10207

HR 7567 includes three dangerous provisions that would fundamentally reshape pesticide accountability and environmental law. Section 10205 would give pesticide manufacturers—including Chinese state-owned Syngenta—complete immunity from failure-to-warn lawsuits, the primary tool Americans use to hold companies accountable. The immunity applies regardless of whether companies knew about risks, buried studies, or refused to update labels. Section 10206 strips 50+ years of state and local pesticide regulation authority, preempting state police power. Section 10207 exempts EPA-registered pesticides from Clean Water Act permitting, Endangered Species Act consultation, and CERCLA cleanup obligations. This rewrites major environmental law without dedicated hearings. Bipartisan opposition includes 100+ House signatures and multiple Senate offices. Amendment 141, Amendment 29, and Amendment 301 would strike these sections, preserving accountability and environmental protections. You can read the full bill for yourself here.

WHY THE AMENDMENTS MATTER

Why This Matters to MAHA™

MAHA opposes Sections 10205, 10206, and 10207 because they contradict transparency, accountability, and informed consent. They shield manufacturers from liability when omitting critical safety warnings and codify regulatory capture by treating EPA approval as a liability shield, regardless of falsified data or silenced scientists. They strip states of authority to protect children from pesticide exposure.t hold corporations accountable when the regulatory system fails. Supporting Amendments 141, 29, and 301 are essential to advancing MAHA's health freedom agenda and ensuring corporate accountability.

Food isn’t just something that fills time between appointments.
It’s one of the most consistent inputs your body receives, and it influences everything from inflammation to metabolic function to how your system responds to stress.
That’s where being informed makes a difference, because it allows you to ask better questions, notice patterns, and make adjustments that actually fit your situation instead of relying on one-size-fits-all advice.
This is something that’s explored in the Becoming Cancer-Free Masterclass, where the focus isn’t just on information, but on helping you understand how to build a more personalized and integrated approach, including how nutrition fits into the bigger picture.

Gratitude Decreases Mortality Risk

By Chauncey Crandall, M.D.

The effect of psychological health on cardiovascular disease has long been underrated, and in fact historically ignored.

When I was studying cardiology some 40 years ago, the focus was squarely on physical fitness, with little or no attention paid to a person’s mental state. But now we know that emotions such as anger, stress, and depression, as well as circumstances such as social isolation take a heavy toll on the heart.

Special: Gratitude May Help You Live Longer — Learn How to Harness It

Fortunately, positive emotional factors can balance the negative impact; factors such as optimism, emotional vitality, life satisfaction, sense of purpose, and mindfulness will improve your heart health.

Another factor drawing a great deal of interest these days — the subject of two major studies in recent years — is gratitude. A Harvard study published this past July in JAMA Psychiatry looked at nurses and found that those who rated highest in gratitude had a lower risk of dying from all causes, especially heart disease.

Researchers looked at data from 49,275 older American nurses who participated in the Nurses’ Health Study, adjusting for socioeconomic factors, religious factors, physical health, lifestyle factors, cognitive function, and mental health. Gratitude was assessed with a six-item questionnaire that is a widely used measure of people’s tendency to experience a grateful effect.

The researchers found that after three years, 10 percent of the nurses had died. But those with the highest levels of gratitude had a 9 percent lower risk of dying during that period, compared with those with the lowest level.

This was the first study to provide empirical evidence that experiencing grateful effects is associated with increased longevity.

The bacteria living in your mouth just gave researchers a window into death risk, cancer, heart attacks, and physical decline years before symptoms appear — and most doctors are not testing for this, yet what science says you can do is remarkable.

In addition, Barcelona researchers tracking 7,000 adults confirmed when you eat matters more than how much — and the fasting strategy millions swear by is quietly working against them, but the eating window that works will surprise you.

In this month’s episode of HerbMentor Radio, Mimi and I speak with Patricia Kyritsi Howell about her time in Crete and how aromatic kitchen herbs such as oregano, rosemary, and thyme are the primary healers on the island.
Patricia recounts how she would walk down the street carrying bundles of herbs, eager to learn about their uses. Because so many residents of Crete are kitchen herbalists, she would invariably be stopped and asked if she had a headache or upset stomach, based solely on the herbs she carried.
Patricia is an Appalachian herbalist and director of the BotanoLogos School of Herbal Studies in North Georgia. She is also the author of the newly updated edition of Medicinal Plants of the Southern Appalachians and co-owner of Wild Crete Travel, where she leads small group tours focused on herbs and traditional foods of the Greek island of Crete.
In this episode, Mimi Prunella and I dive into a conversation with Patricia about:
  • The intoxicating sights and scents within a traditional Greek kitchen
  • The role of aromatic herbs in nourishing and healing
  • The cultural tradition of gathering wild greens known as horta
  • Patricia’s perspective on the healing qualities of oregano and sumac berries
It was a delight to be transported to the beautiful island of Crete for this episode, and I’m excited to invite you along for the journey!

Did you miss out on our live webinar, 4 Practical Steps to Help a Loved One Heal From Chronic Health Conditions, today?

We know many of you couldn't attend so we wanted to give you the chance to watch a limited-time replay. CLICK HERE to access it. >>

The truth is, the 4-step framework we share in the webinar isn't something we invented overnight. It's the foundation of everything we teach in our Food Matters Nutrition Certification Course, a comprehensive, internationally accredited program built around exactly what we covered today: root cause nutrition, reducing chronic inflammation, and giving you the knowledge to genuinely help the people you love.

Because here's what we've seen happen, over and over…

Someone watches a webinar like today's. They feel the shift, that moment of oh, this makes sense. They go home, they try a few things, they have one good conversation with their loved one.

And then life gets in the way. The knowledge fades. The momentum drops.

The Certification Course is what makes it stick. It takes you from inspired to genuinely equipped with the depth of understanding to keep going when it gets hard, to know what to try next, and to be the person your family actually turns to.

Plus, when you enroll, you will get access to a global community of people who are on the same path as you, including monthly live group calls with us, James & Laurentine, to support you along the way.

Until April 30th only, we're opening enrollment at a special rate for webinar attendees.

You can learn more, and enroll HERE. >>

cellular aging looks different in women
Estrogen isn't just a reproductive hormone; it's your metabolic bodyguard.

It protects your mitochondria, regulates your blood sugar, and keeps dangerous fat from accumulating around your organs.

And when it starts to decline? Everything shifts.

On the podcast today, the brilliant Dr. Siobhan Mitchell breaks down exactly what's happening at the cellular level during perimenopause and menopause, and what you can actually do about it.
Tune in to this conversation to learn about:
  • Why estrogen loss triggers mitochondrial dysfunction—and how that shows up as brain fog, fatigue, and stubborn weight
  • The gut-hormone connection: how declining microbiome diversity affects estrogen metabolism and metabolic health
  • S-equol: the powerful phytoestrogen only 20-30% of Western women can produce (and why it matters for belly fat, blood glucose, and cardiovascular health)
  • Why movement alone isn't enough to maintain vascular health and nitric oxide production in midlife
  • What compounds like MitoQ, NAD precursors, and targeted probiotics can do to support cellular resilience
  • The truth about HRT timing, and why waiting until menopause may be too late

If your body is built to heal…

Why does it feel like it’s falling behind?

Dear jimi,
On Thursday, April 30, 2026, every member of the U.S. House of Representatives will vote on whether to stand with pesticide victims or with Bayer-Monsanto, the company that poisoned them.
If Democrats vote to protect pesticide victims and Republicans support Bayer-Monsanto, as each party is expected to do, we lose, but the Republican majority is slim (218 to 215) and several are breaking ranks: Reps. Eli Crane of Arizona, Lauren Boebert of Colorado, Anna Paulina Luna of Florida, Nancy Mace of South Carolina, Thomas Massie of Kentucky, Brian Fitzpatrick and Ryan Mackenzie of Pennsylvania, Chip Roy of Texas, and Mike Kennedy of Utah.
Call the House Switchboard to be connected with your Representative’s office: (202) 224-3121
Ask them to support Rep. Nancy Mace (R-SC)’s Amendment #301 that would strip all harmful pesticide provisions from the Farm Bill.
If you prefer to email, use the alert below. We’ll update the alert with news of the vote as soon as it happens.
TAKE ACTION: Tell Congress to Strike the Pesticide Deregulation Sections From the 2026 House Farm Bill!

On Monday, Bayer argued before the Supreme Court in Monsanto v. Durnell that federal law prevents pesticide-exposed cancer victims from suing it in state courts.
At the same time, it has been lobbying Congress to change federal law to stop pesticide-exposed cancer victims from suing them in state courts.
This is a bold admission that its assertion that state failure-to-warn claims are preempted by federal laws governing pesticide labels is bunk—a point Durnell’s lawyer made to the Justices during oral arguments.
Hundreds of people showed up at the Supreme Court to stand with pesticide victims against Bayer.
We need thousands of people to call the U.S. House of Representatives today - (202) 224-3121.
On Thursday, April 30, 2026, your Member of Congress will vote on the Farm Bill. Please call their office to demand that they vote to strip the bill of provisions Bayer has spent millions lobbying for that would protect the company from lawsuits that have cost the company billions.

TAKE ACTION: Tell Congress to Strike the Pesticide Deregulation Sections From the 2026 House Farm Bill!
Wishing you health,
