I have been to Vegas only three or four times (each time was "just passing through" and I spent a night there) and Reno and South Lake Tahoe dozens of times (because who I was with at the time wanted to go there). I found Vegas slightly more amusing than Reno (better showmanship), but basically, I do not enjoy gambling and the floor shows can either be slightly entertaining or completely boring, so, to me, they are not worth it. As the piggy I used to be, the 99-cent buffets were always something to enjoy, but by themselves are hardly worth going to those locations just for that. South Lake Tahoe allowed me to visit the Bonanza movie sets, take lots of photos of a neat lake, and climb some rocks. Other than that, I see no reason to ever go back there again either. I am an explorer, but not subject to mindless supposed entertainment.

I only went the first time because I wanted to have a reunion with my favorite cousin I hadn't seen in over 30 years before a trip to Seattle for my niece's graduation

My cousin lives in Barstow

Seemed funner to meet her in Vegas rather than Barstow or LA; it was

I was driving through the night, LA to Arizona (after spending a day running around Santa Catalina), and stopped at a motel in Barstow. Next morning, I woke up, dressed, stepped out the door, looked all around, and said, "Where the hell am I?" A splat in the desert that calls itself a town. Yes, Juice, you were right to choose Vegas.

Started checking into medigap insurance.
Lots of sites on the net if one googles.
Many appear to be benign informational sites.
Sites with names like Kentucky Medigap insurance information, etc
Where one could go and browse medigap insurance information on line...
Nope.
All are get your info then call you with a high pressure sales call.
then call again then email 27 times, etc..
Assholes...

Had a similar issue with homeowners insurance the other day

ONe company had three different phone calls within a 10 minute period - it was ridiculous

Seems to be SOP these days, Crom. I saw an ad that "guaranteed" they would find me an auto insurance policy that would save me money and at no time did anything offer me a reduced rate, but demanded MY information (which I did not give them - I just logged off). Unfortunately, they had my e-mail and inundated me with spam full of lies (all responding insurance companies charged more than my current policy, but none of them gave an exact number). Yes, I will second (third?) your final comment: Assholes!

I have entrys on my flip phone labelled asshole1,2,3,4

I have a tiny flip-phone for emergency use only. Even I don't know what my phone number is. And it is never "on" so if it ever rang, I wouldn't know. BUT... one of those insurance agent must have access to some computer program I am unaware of because she got my home phone number when she had access to nothing more than my e-mail. But, my home phone (land line) has an answering machine and any incoming call whose number we do not recognize will be picked up by the machine and the call will never be returned.

That can work, up until they change the fake number they appear to be calling from.
Why I have so many asshole entrys in my phone. I think I can only put a max of 4 numbers per entry.
I have no problem at all just hanging up on telemarketers and such.

Same here. anyone who knows us will call on our cells. The answering machine volume and ringer is turned down and we just check it every few days to see if anything worthy of note is on it.

That's what we do too

Think we are just not going to do a landline at all once we move

I need to see if I can drop the landline and keep DSL....
And would it be cheaper?
I figure they will jack the DSL rates up without voice service.

FAIK, most DSL types can run "naked" or without phone service.
Around here, they assume you don't have POTS, so it's extra to include it.

On one of our trips, a friend loaned us this neat little AT&T gadget, that gave us great internet service no matter where we went. We will probably do something like that

Checked into those but the data caps are too low. And wind up being pretty pricy.
Wife unit watches lots of net movies and such.
Horrible things with lots of screaming and suffering...

Ohh wait that is me when I get the bill...

We're still working on it, we can get phone service to our house, but would have to pay for the line from the pole on the road to the house; sadly, it's a telephone virgin

There are also outfits that direct broadcast net service. You put up an antenna connected to a reciever.

google internet service providers for your future address.

Cable modem service?

Not sure cable is available to us

We really did like the AT&T thing, but didn't monitor our costs. We gave the owner $50 to load it, used it at will, though definitely not as much as we have here at home or at work.

Been looking at different options out there, especially amongst the people who live mobile (full-time RV people, etc)

It is a microwave kind of thing and requires a fixed location and line of sight to the transmitting antenna.

Some of the newer satellite options are supposed to be pretty good compared to that of yesteryear

We're making a trip for the month of April (tentatively) to try to nail down a lot of these details

We'd kinda sorta been shooting to move in late October, but after more real-time research yesterday, it looks like early to mid Sept. would be better for several reasons, including-but-not-limited-to the cost

In any case, we're buying the one-way tickets this week, likely tomorrow night

Our internet is line of sight to a transmitter in town. Phone service is bundled onto it, so no landline. Total cost = about half the cost of landline + dsl, and we have free long distance. The only cellphone service I have is tracfone, which I only turn on when necessary.

As for scammer calls, if I hear the phone ring, and don't know the caller, I pick up and hang up just as fast. Most of it is robocalls anyways. I can set a watch to those assholes.

Mine is both. While the phone is only 1/3 of the total monthly rate (land line plus 200 minutes of long distance plus 10M DSL), if I drop the phone, the total rate stays the same. If I drop the DSL, the phone rate would double. Out here in the middle of nowhere, it is DSL or Hughsnet satellite. No other options.

Out with the old, in with the new (to us)

Sept. 3, we are outta here
Sorry I didn't stay on here long enough to answer this last night, but the keyboard was going blurry on me and I decided my pillow needed some serious attention, and a couple of my cats decided they needed some too, so we all cuddled up and made Zzzzzzs together.

Anyhooo... we still have you all summer? And no doubt you'll have to get a brand new e-mail after you throw off the Alaskan robes and become a full time Hula mrs., but don't forget us. :blowkiss:

Yeah, over half a year, but with a pretty firm deadline

Am figuring I will still need to relax and socialize, maybe more so with the complete and utter change in geography/culture, lol

I wanted Nov. 1, but it wasn't practical flight-wise at all and there were significant advantages to September

Only thing you miss is Dale - haven't seen him since he took off - hopefully he's taking a well-deserved holiday

Naw, you said you talked to Sandi (who seems to think this thread got too political?). More likely, we got too boring, as old pharts often do. Sigh...

I am helping her move into rebuildable attys.

yeah as I got older I kinda liked boring more.

I kinda suspect we get a bit to controversial for Jimi.
Even not including politics.
or maybe he misses the biscuits?

I sometimes think of the good old days... but now, how can I talk about exciting things like racing cars or motorcycles or 4-wheeling a dangerous trail or skiing a diamond run when I haven't done any of that stuff for 15-20 (or more) years? I work a hobby farm (or should I call it a hobble farm?) and all I can do is bitch about cow shit and nasty weather. What's worth reading about that crap? Sigh....

Been reading on a 2 inch thick C++ manual today that I picked up at the library yesterday.
Amazing how much one forgets in 18 years or so.
But coming back nicely.

LOL talk about boring :D
