I must be missing something. Did you make the claptons too or just the braids?

Lol no j riley made the claptons for me n I made the braids, the pics of other braids that I posted king pin wanted to see if I was able to braid claptons been a bout a week so floatin back n forth all based from a ig photo kingpin seen n him can't braid for nothing n me wanting to challenge myself being only 2months into building so thanks to jriely n his Clapton wire I was successful on making a guppy clapton. didn't have enough wire to make a fishtail Clapton n that picof my feet is the fishtail braid with 6 strands but one started to decore n. They were gonna be too short to get two coils so switched to a 3 strand or guppy cause they smaller than the traditional 6 strand to get two coils

Oh ok i gottcha ive been away from the forum for a while. I havent done clapton braids but i love the flavorful vape i get from micro zipper claptons. I posted these before i think. Theyre pretty low mass and hold tons of juice. If memory serves they were total of 6 strands 30/40n80 or 32/42gn80 cant remember.

They were a worthwhile learning experience for sure. Forced me to step up my claptoning skills. Now all these months later when I look at them all I see are the mistakes and think wow how could I have screwed up sometging so simple! Lol. Happy to be here and learning lots thanks guys!

26(2)x 32ga kanthal fused clapton, 7 wraps on 3mm. resistance is pretty high but this is the first coil I ever built in my life....lol pretty proud and messed up a few times. I am vaping it on my new Pharaoh rta @65w on an alien 220 with top airflow closed and bottom half open.

I'm still using the Coil master V3 jig that came with the V2 master kit. No slot on there for the wide wires. Just been using a micro screwdriver set to wrap all my wide wires. Full disclosure, I'm in between jobs right now which is why I have so much time to build, but on the downside I can't really get any new gear. Had my 2nd interview at a smoke shop today they love my vape knowledge, but I don't really know about all the glass wares so they gave me homework. I finished another build I was playing around with, staple staggered fused staggerton lol? .3R and 28g frames, .4R core, all 38g wrap.

Imho its actually easier coiling a zipper clapton but then again iv only done mine in lighter gauges 30/40g. I used N80 so that may have made it easier too. Once i had the strands lined up i bound one end and put it in the vise to coil it.

I cant get enough of these alien stags! Thanks man. Im still trying to get faster at my simple stags and now learning the float technique. Should I get the stags really dialed in before i give this a go?

Sent from my SM-G920V using Tapatalk
These arent made the same way as a normal staggerton but any practice will help.
To make Alien staggs just start with a normal 3x28g/36g Alien, when you go to lay the alien wrap just space them out 1mm by giving the decore a strong forward lean and using tension to control the spacing. Then Frame it with 28g and fuse it with a 24g/36g decore.

Spacing is the hardest part and will take a few attempts to make them look nice, I also suggest using a coil jig or a pasta roller to flatten it out after...it just looks much better doing it.

I know its haed to see because of my camera but how does that look to you guys for the stretch of the decore to wrap an alien? I was able to make aliens consiatantly well for awhile and then 1 day I just could not get it right. I have been having trouble since then but I figured that I would give it another go and see if I can start getting it right again lol.

There is no correct amount of stretch. Some like no stretch, some like max stretch. The important part is tension.
Do you have enough or too much stretch for the amount of tension you use?
If your just wrapping up the slinky (mohawk) you need more stretch or more tension, it's up to you. If you're getting it to wrap flat but it's all over the place you need less stretch or less tension.
More important than any of that is your cores. If they have equal tension you can put little tension on the drill and as much as you want on the slinky and the cores won't collapse and you don't need any aides to hold the cores flat. The setup is usually the part people have problems with.

@whiteowl84 thx for the tips! I have had an issue with my cores before but seem to have solved it since I started to use hot glue. I can make perfect 3 core fused clapton all day so I will just set my cores up the same as I do for that. :)

it ended up another failure . im going to try to get atleast a coil out of it but for the most part its really bad. I am having trouble keeping the wraps tight without it going backwards and knotting up.

Use 36g.
Start the slinky and turn a few wraps slowly to find your tension and angle (should be slightly forward). Don't hold the slinky any different from what's working while you're going slow then just open the drill up as fast as it'll go. Keep tension and angle till you get to the end just like a clapton.
It helps if you do 6" pieces of decore twice so you end up with two 4" aliens on one stick. After you wrap the first just hook the new slinky on the tail of the last one.

Ok thanks for the recipe! Ive spaced aliens but keeping the space even all the way will be the 1st challenge.

Thanks to you whiteowl Ive started clipping my decore in half. It gets rid of the hassle of managing a long slinky. I used to waste so much time draping it over tables and untangeling. Appreciated the tip!

I'm gonna try it whiteowls way next time as well still try 12" lengths at a time and it's normally just over half way i tend to get an issue if I'm gonna get one might try 2 7" lengths instead as it takes me a while to get into the groove

Im about the same. I make the decore 14" and clip the slinky in half. Like having a little extra. Oh btw i use mtewks technique too. Before decoring i hold the clap with nylon plyers and reverse the drill for a few seconds. This lets the core slide out so easy

Yeah picked that one up ages ago do it also...another thing I never do anymore is hold my cores and use the drill to straighten them I just stretch everything from the spool now so much better, no kinks and less stress on the metal so fewer if any breaks under tension when into the main event

One more quick ? If i cant get all the twist out of the core should i still try to float it between the frames?

I never cut the core off the swivel. I get the twisting out and then loop 28g and put the loop at the beginning of the core and have the frame ends go to the swivel end.

I use ribbon to secure the loop then one to slide to the end and one for where I will be fusing.

Then I pull the frames tight and add hot glue right after the last slider then I pull them tight and bend them 90 degrees so they are locked in as tight as they could be...this makes them suck up to the core if your pull on the drill.

I put the looped end into a handvise or drill clamp and start fusing. This is how I normally do all my staggertons.

Yup i just figured out they need to be in tension like an alien...no float! The way you described was my 1st instinct. But instead i tried to float. That failed in the 1st 1/2" lol... I gotta get my core perfect on the next try. Think theres a good 1" or 2 on this stick somewhere! Ill give it another go later. Thanks for the help!

There are a couple techniques here Im gonna try in the morning. When i do aliens i always tension from the chuck and pull to the swivell like you discribe. Then pull and bend in an L. But i havent hot glued at the swivel end yet...tomorrow. Also any suggestions on a great hand vise? I really need one now!

I use a paperclip bent into a loop in my chuck so I never need to center wire or bend them into a "L"....I just loop through around themselves and pull tight.

As for the Clamp...this one works in any 1/4" Chuck: LINK

Ok this is my 3rd ever coil so be gentle! I wasted a god awful amount of wire today learning, but I actually got this on the first shot. I don't have anything to mount it in as of yet, but I have a govad on a slow boat. It should be .3ish (it's 24 and 28). Mostly I'm pretty happy I pulled anything off at all. I also got a decent length of 28x36 clapton done but i didn't wrap it.
