Yeah this is so true. Also the pressure of the clamping can collapse cores. I used to use paperclips on everything but now I only use them on ribbon builds or 4+ core builds.

I will have to give ribbon sliders a try.

I'm with JRiley on this one, I've tried paper clips, hair clips, keyring. None are able to save you if they fly off during wrapping and that can and will happen at the worst of times. A well wrapped ribbon slider works much better and does not add inertia to the wire with quick stop starts. I have a box of all the offcuts from doing any sort of staple work and keep the ribbon to use in future binding. Works a treat and means you don't have to keep cutting off a reel.

I don't have any ribbon, do you think 22 or 24g round wire might work the same? I'm working with a tiny keyring (1 cm diameter) and only 7-8 inches of wire, but I would like to practice good habits before I waste another decore I mean before I make my first alien.

Use a high gauge round wire. Most builders I've seen will use 40g but 38 or 36 will work just as well. Just remember to flatten the wrap down with tweezers or pliers after each wrap to make sure it's wrapped tightly against the sides and the top/bottom of your 3 cores.

22G christ almighty, use 40G or higher but bindings like that is typically what we use on the ends.
If you really want to learn good habits (especially with aliens)I can show you, they are the same principals shown to me when I started. I don't claim to know everything or anything but their are bad habits in building that will hinder you from ever progressing and I would hate for anyone to just "settle"

Not true - it depends on the situation. For staples, I use 38g sliders. For 3+ core fused Claptons, I use SMALL keyrings, and they work perfectly.

There are situations chef, keeping round core wires flat without the support that an alien wrap gives is very difficult. There is a place for every nick nack thought of for building. I am stressing what happened to me because I wanted to keep progressing and finding out the causes. I don't mean to say/lead on to that something is useless.

For my most recent coil build (those big fat staples in my black Goon) my ribbon stack was held flat by using a keyring. The reason why it didn't fly off is because I wrapped two small pieces of masking tape around my keyring (one on either side of my ribbon stack) so that kept it in place. What's more, my keyring gently wobbled itself slowly toward the swivels so I didn't even have to stop to move my keyring. Part because of that, this has been my fastest easiest coil build ever. But I wouldn't use a keyring for making 27g Nichrome80 / 36g Nichrome80 (3-core) aliens... those are easier to make without using any kind of sliders at all... instead just grab something like a SpinLT or very similar (mine is custom made... pic below) and be sure to have equal tension on all 3 of the core wires, watch it catch and let 'er rip at full speed as this is what all the pro builders are saying, and, they are 150 percent right. :)

Letting it rip is my favorite suggestion so far!
I did what I set out to do today. I'm happy with it's jankiness because I think I learned a lot, and HellYeah alien wrap!IMG_20180103_143903_crop_2000x2000.jpg

Never thought I'd put an alien coil in my Serpent Mini, man this is the coolest vape I've had with such dense clouds. I can taste more flavors in my liquid, too!

Thanks for all the experience shared here, I'll try again tomorrow of course.

What core did you use to make your decore? I was thinking about trying to decore a fused clapton tomorrow to see what it did for a 6 core alien

Had a go with a single coil staggerton ohms out a bit high for single battery or parralel mech at 0.27 but vapes well should have gone for 4 wrap

Ehhhhhh, with regular tsukas only advice I can give is ... It takes way more twisting than what your going to think, your going to constantly stop and compare and question how long your twisting. When it's right tho it's blatantly apparent so just keep twisting until the "shiney" areas match your frames.

Alien tsukas are so different ... They require so much tension and do NOT stop once it gets going or shot collapses, they are different for sure.

.3 I think would look nicer for normal tsuka I just don't like using my .3 for wraps, it already gets used in every build.

i have pulled off regular tsukas with .3 or .4 (somewhere in this thread), but i have tried alien tsukas twice with .3 and i think its too thick. it was a real struggle to almost get there, but never quite made it. let us know if you manage it.

@Jriley have you ever tried alien tsukas with .3? think its possible?

No I haven't tried alien tsukas with .3 , I have tried alien tsukas probably 12x with .2 and every single stick collapsed except for that one I posted... Was weird because it started to collapse right at the start and it pissed me off so I just pulled hard on my decore and squeezed the piss out of my drill trigger and so F it.... and low n behold it just flew on. I was pulling hard AF too(on decore) so it took alot of tension.

I actually prefer it with a “complex” single 4mm ID coil and I sit my coils lower than most out there for this RDA (I have tried different heights) I try and line up so top of the coil is in line or just above inside post but it does mean it sits close to the deck which isn’t ideal for squonking (I use dual coil 3mm for that)

Also you can’t just rest the 4mm coil tool on the deck edges to mount it as it will sit to high (which is a faff - as I found mounting that one above) ...but mounting it lower by hand and then some fiddling about pulling it up and getting it straightened up with a smaller 2.5mm helped after

Also helps to sculpt the wicking creating a narrow chamber and build it up above the deck using a single coil this helps to boost flavour a bit as well sort of like the below

interesting. that sounds very similar to my attempts with .3. i think i was trying to use 3x28 for my cores, which might be too small for this. if i try it again on .3 (was planning to wait and order some .2) ill try it on something sturdier, and ill keep in mind the fuckitall strategy (which i have successfully employed numerous times in the past). :cheers:

I'll be more careful next time :xD: RAMMING SPEED THIS TIME

4.5mm ID, 0.55 ohm, then I squished it a tad to make it more oblong shaped so each side would be a bit closer to the air. It vapes well at 65 watts, spits any higher, not useful for any kind of mech though.

Still tidier than my early attempts at those. Most important part is making sure the staggered Clapton is evenly spaced and then spinning the drill in reverse to loosen up the wraps. If they can move back and forth while you're fusing it will just fall into place easily

hey @KingPin! is that stagg a round wire in the middle with ribbon fused to it? how do you like it? ever tried it the other way around (ribbon stack in the middle with round frames fused to it)? so far i have only tried it with ribbon in the middle with round frames fused onto it (both groove fused and regular/paraclap). i remember @scarecrowjenkins saying he preferred a ribbon stack in the middle, with both ribbon and round frames fused to it. i really gotta try some variations on that soon (i suck at fusing so i always talk myself out of risking my limited building time on a build i could fail...time to grow a pair lol).

nice sfc @Pegleg Meg, in ten days you have gone from parallel round wire builds to aliens and sfc :slowclap: cant wait to see what you do when you really get going lol :bliss:

Oh no no no...I started building parallel coils about 2 years ago, it's been 10 days or so since I first used used a drill for wire, that's all.
