Exactly man, ribbon always seemed harder to use than it is to me, you just need to set it up properly and it will, coil gods willing, take orders and get into place lol.

I put up my contraption a little while ago @ScReWbALL, it's the button technique and the weighted object technique in one but if you do it right the wire doesn't wobble back and forth and will create consistent gaps, even with a fair bit of pressure on the wrap hand. The pressure exerted does mean that you HAVE to wind backwards to loosen up the coils, but it works. If you need me to upload it again or upload it set up then let me know

I notice some of the earlier participants have either stopped doing it altogether or have taken what they needed and left
yeah that happens. i have seen people show up, learn to build, start an instagram, get sponsored and then leave. others stick around for a while, or come back occasionally...others are more aloof and just post a couple pics every few months and disappear again. its all good to me. i think its cool seeing someone come in here and start from scratch and end up sponsored or otherwise' famous'. thats not what i am looking for, so i am happy to just put my time back in here where i came up from nothing. @CrazyChef v2.0 and @raymo2u were the two biggest helpers when i was coming up. without them offering advice and putting up with my noob questions and over-enthusiasm i wouldnt be able to do this. i literally needed them to end up here now, so i feel its pretty important to try to keep doing that for someone else.

@ScReWbALL i was building fused claptons with no swivels, and i actually hit 26 gauge aliens freehand...but theres no way i would think of 28 or smaller gauge aliens, or anything stapled, staggered or otherwise without a swivel. swivel and drill clamp are two of the most important tools imo. out of all the other stuff i bought for building, those are the only two things that actually allowed me to do better builds.

it seems like a waste of good wrap wire to use that technique for Staggered builds...I’m leaning towards the weighted object technique unless there’s some other good ways out there that I can check out
i found a spool of fishing line thats the same size as 38 gauge. it works pretty well for paraclap. i only tried it once, and havnt picked it up again, but it seemed like the line i unwrapped could even be used again. its $5/100ft though, so its not as expensive to waste as actual wire, in the event that it doesnt work a second time.

Speaking of Staggered builds and such. The two main techniques I’ve read and watched people do on tutorials for creating perfectly spaced claptons is either using a weighted object placed in a gap behind where you’re claptoning and then the paraclapton and then reverse the drill and pull one of the Claptons out...are there other techniques that are worth checking out? I’ve been working on paraclaptoning to do interlocked Aliens, but it seems like a waste of good wrap wire to use that technique for Staggered builds...I’m leaning towards the weighted object technique unless there’s some other good ways out there that I can check out
i use the spool tamer and a wire behind it i just make two seperate staggers. Easyer for me to deal with 2 2 foot chuncks then 1 4 foot chunk just me though

I learnt loads from this build thread and encouragement from everyone was always excellent. I remember saying to Machine when I was starting out, I’m not good enough to post in this thread an he said it’s not about coil porn it’s about recording your progress and sharing with others what you learn along the way ....cheers buddy can’t thank you enough for that I’d probably still be making badly wrapped claptons without the encouragement to try new things haha

I’ve use a button, peg and weighted method for spacing

I’d say the weighted method is easiest to set up and get cracking but is suceptable to slipping out of position if going too fast ....I can’t stress how highly irritating this is when it happens on the final 3rd of the length

Button method most consistent spacing I’ve found, but I found certain buttons work better than others which is it’s diwnside, also take a while to set up

Peg method takes ages to set up in terms of making it - idea is to clapton with the peg run a bit of wire behind that sticks up a bit in order to space it as it goes ....this was really hit and miss for me perhaps I drilled to far apart on the peg either way not as easy as the two above

The problem of slipping out of position is fixed by combining the button trick and the weighted method into one. I already told about this right here in the thread not too long after I completed my first own coil build. However, I found that with 38g Ni80 it doesn't work reliably enough because under the weight the tiny piece of wire that's used to tie the button down will snap too easily so nowadays I tend to just use the traditional loop method (by holding the loop with my─tip of my─pinky finger and adjusting the length of the loop to render that possible).

As for choosing the right button... mine is about ¾″ and I use it with the convex side ( =back side) positioned against the core.

Should have mentioned I combine button and weight together ....that is indeed what I do with the button method

I now combine the loop method and ziploc technique together. With delicate, higher gauge wire this has worked wonders for me.

Never heard of the ziplock technique outside of parallel clapton how does that work with loop method? Do you mean instead of holding the spool, you use a ziplock bag with a single spool?

I’ve set up a rig where I don’t need to hold the spool for clapton work, it works well for my needs

Yes, I keep the ziploc bag with a single spool standing upright in a box on the floor. The loop method also works for regular claptons, not just spaced claptons... all you need to do to make it work with a regular clapton is put the loop on the other side of your lead ( =wrap wire), and, the same holds true for the button trick as well. Attaching the botton becomes less of a PITA if, beforehand, you freehand-clapton about ¾″ so that, next, you can use a small piece of masking tape to temporarily hold the button in place until you've finished tying it to your core. I.e., just tape the button to the beak of your drill in such a way that you can later remove the piece of tape without kinking up your core.

The masking tape I use is by a brand called Tesa. Masking tape leaves no residue after you slowly peel it off again, yet it sticks just firmly enough to make coil building life so much less frustrating─like Squidoode explained in his build video tutorials a few times. I use masking tape in just about every build. For example, if your core snaps at the chuck of your drill, you can prevent that from happening by wrapping a small piece of masking tape around the end of your core and insert that end into the chuck in such a way that the masking tape is sticking halfway out of the chuck. Doing that also makes it easier to position the core nice and centered into the chuck. You can still also apply the 90 degree bend at the end of your core in addition to this. This is just one example of all the wonderful things I learned from watching Squidoode (The Art of Vaping on YouTube).

Wow it’s been AGES since I’ve been on the forums.. couple of years at least... I wonder if anyone from back then is still posting? I do remember @raymo2u . We had some long posts back and forth on this thread about building! If your still around @ me!!! I would love to see where your building skills brought you!

<cough looks away>

Half SSFC. 6 .5x.1 K1/26g K1/36g Ni80. 5/6 3mm ID wraps came to 0.15ohms on my Goon 1.5 x Smoant Charon.
Was actually planning to make a full SSFC but only made 1 side of staggered clapton since I'm shit at staggering :giggle:.

Lovely build right there! Really like the way half SSFC vape

Today I made a 2x32/36 trying to turn my Joyetech Procore X tank mtl (fail lol), while watching McGuiyver lol

And I realized you can refill the Pyro RDTA by globbing juice right into the middle while tilting just a bit toward a juice hole!

Rad, dude. :tunez:

I listen to classical music when I spin wire lately lol, trying to mellow out, normally a huge metalhead but I relapsed on the way to see Gojira in New Orleans in May so I'm changing everything, even music

Not sure if it's been mentioned yet but Raymo has a pre-order open for his clamps

Now I just need Chef, B_D or Raymo to release a top notch swivel system and I’m set haha

Oh while your at it better versions of the alien makers or something that holds the cores straight and can move without having to stop and move sliders would be sweet too :)

3 and 5 core support are a must ;)

thanks for the heads up @b_d_builders

my chuck clamp just sheared in half a couple days ago so this is perfect timing for me. i got my order in within a few hours of rays ig post, and im pretty surprised to see theres still some left today (i was actually terrified they would already be sold out by the time i got there). i hope they last long enough for everyone here to get their orders in.

My first stitched alien same specs as the fralien with a 38g stitch so it's 10*.3x.1/28g/36g/38g all ss316l. As you can see I ballsed up so I'll be doing it again. I think it was the way I had the decore and stitch lying, seemed to bunch up, but could also have been the initial stretch of the decore. Thanks @Darthvaper510 for inspiring me to retry the stitched alien, I must have been doing multiple things wrong originally for it to have been so hard before. Onwards and upwards, next a 38g decore and 40g stitch lol

nice work @Darthvaper510

the way I had the decore and stitch lying, seemed to bunch up
i noticed that too. i found it was because i under-stretched. as you wrap that up and squeeze on it to get that last bit of stretch, the whole decore spirals out a little behind you. if it has stitch inside it they get all fucked up. stop and gently slide your hand down the length of decore often.

Onwards and upwards, next a 38g decore and 40g stitch
i found that it worked easier with the smallest stitch possible, or the largest difference between wrap and stitch gauges that you can do. for example, i think its easier to do 36/42 or 38/42 than it would be to do 38/40, 36/38 or 40/42...i only pulled off a couple builds though, so take my advice with a grain of salt (nics)....

i am not a fan of the vape they give (or interlock or mowhawk) compared to regular alien wrap. i learned how to do them and have never done another. they look awesome, take a lot of skill, but meh...

great build btw man, as always

Nice one @mach1ne, I'll certainly try that of it bunches up on the next go. I've also never tried them before so just wanted to have the ability there. To be perfectly honest the first part of it I though it was well easier than standard alien wraps, have to see if the vape diminishes my views on that effort. Lovely to look at though as you say haha. In your opinion do you think, from what the alien wraps look like in the pic, I could use that same size decore on a wider build and get tighter spacing? It is still quite wavy so I would have thought that it'd take at least 2 more pieces of ribbon if not 4 before the waviness became unnoticeable.

im not sure. i think its the gauge of the stitch that determines the spacing (or the potential tightness of it at least). i have no idea what would happen regarding the waves. make sure to post your findings

I don't think my name has been said more on VU since I started here than this last page

Hope everyone enjoys them and there are more builder geared tools coming soon. Adjustable swivel mount, auto paraclap kit, swivel clamps lite version, and a few other thingies. I'm not making massive profit off this since I wanted the best product for a good cost so its not lightning fast...but good things come to those that wait, I hope more companies push for higher quality and performance oriented products and learn to not punish customers with prices for it.

Sorry that I havent been active on here...I wish there were more hours in the day but I think if I crammed another thing in my days on top of everything else Id have a stroke lol

But here's the goodies for the night...Hyon mods had a competition and people tagged their favorite builders and I guess I was one of the top 5 chosen, now I've got to brainstorm on what to put in the Cuete' RDA....these were what I was thinking of doing but I don't think it will cut it with who I'm up against. All the staggering was done with Spool Gamers...

Here's what I slapped in it just to try the rda out...I was TERRIFIED installing these in it...

It’s a stunning RDA Raymo saw the deck on your Instagram yesterday the black version is really nice! Congrats :)

I’d like to know when the other bits are coming out the swivels I’ve got are horseshit, will it have ceramic bearings?

Anything to make the building process easier I’m up for haha

Here is my first build. All kanthal ohm out at .10 it takes forever to cool down like I can't hit it 2 - 3 times after hitting the fire button. Need to get some nichrome or SS to wrap from what I been reading..View attachment 101978
Great job. Definitely some n80 will help your cause of heat issue. That's the one thing I hated about kanthal. The ramp down time. Like you said 2 or 3 hits after the button is released. Ahhh
