Sorry to hear that MMM... system gets ya one way or the other!
It genuinely does at that. We are no saints of holding onto what we earn. Still we do not go out of our way to live beyond our means either. We do make a diligent good faith effort to keep bills paid.
Granted I dread thinking of her school loan she has in "hardship", or whatever flavor they're calling the help program. That however is well over 100 grand for a silly two year liberal arts degree. She has her "core" classes. None of the college's finance dept ever brought up Pell Grants to her or her sis. With her dad having had 40 + active, likely 3/4 of her bill would have been paid.
I had a bit of trouble with a credit card myself. Used it for family needs with what I thought was an agreement the family would help pay on it. Ha ha, boy was I fooled. Right as that started coming due I lost a job, rest of family that had helped pile on the bill high tailed out of state. I lost a job in simplest terms from a management shakeup. The "new" manager didn't want me there, found an "excuse". Good as I am, once someone starts looking they'll find anything and it won't matter what.
So my lesson learned. I'll not ever have a credit card again, end of discussion. Debit card, sure maybe but I know that I need watching a little. Rather stay with cash. "This is your pile, once it is gone that's it for you." That keeps it simple. And no, I don't really "spend" much.
Vaping has become an incidental in a way but I'm not always going after the "best" or "high end" stuff either. I like snack foods, might buy a beer on occasion, maybe get a fifth of rum to stash after a nip or two. I'm no fashion plate for clothes. jeans t-shirt, sweats t-shirt/sweatshirt/hoodie I like neutral colors, Earthy. Sometimes I might like my Carhart work clothes, which can be costly a bit, but they damn well last a while too.
Sometime drop $50 - $70 for a decent work boot which also lasts.
She works at Goodwill. I've had second hand nearly all my life except for skivies, refuse to second hand those and think that's fair. She's about the same clothes wise. Never wears a dress, seldom a skirt. Well a dress once, our wedding day.
Only day aside from military I wore a tie, or ever will.
Yes we do eat out some. We might could cut back on that. Possibly trim in our ISP a bit, though we've kind of allowed for that like a utility. $50 a month I think it is, water if we need to pay town water here is about $30 monthly. We don't see that as being too far out of our means if at all.
Not sure what we'll do. Sure we'll manage. Got a few voices telling me as much. Most of them brought me up and were brought up through life rough like me & her. Will put faith in that. Sorry, I'm just damn frustrated needing to move us back into that.
If that sounds chauvinistic, well, lump it damn it. A man like me likes to take care of his Lady. It is just how we got trained up, how we gave our word to her grandfather. Would have been the same if I had gotten a husband. That's just me. *shrugs* Take care of those I love, or try well to do so.
And yeah, I'm already kicking this dog's ass here because he didn't "take hold" and get into some kind of "work" away from home to bring money in sooner. Yes, that's on me, can own it. Yes, feel shamed a good bit. Do not need any reminder of it, trust me I kick myself hard enough for everyone else.
