Should I buy a mech?

Hello Everyone,

Just as the title says... Let me tell you where I'm coming from (and its been quite a ride so far). I recently purchased an IPV4S and I'm loving it. I've tried all the features on it so far from my standard kanthal build (between .25 and .3 ohms) to a dual ni200 build to a dual titanium build. I tried out temp control for about a week, and switched back to kanthal out of paranoia. Going back to kanthal kinda made me realize what I was missing with it so until temp control gets a bit more perfected, I'm going to stay tried and true.

I was on the fence about getting a mech, flip flopping back and forth. But out of sheer curiosity I really want one but I'm not sure how the experience will be different from my regulated IPV4S. Whats attractive to me is everything being replaceable and easily repairable for the most part. It also seems like a more "natural" way to vape since you have to feel what the mods doing instead of waiting for a cutoff to happen.

I've gone to Steam Engine and ran the numbers on my batteries (I have 2 pairs of Samsung 25r's), and looks like my build between .25 - .30 ohms should be good on any mech I grab. I want a dual 18650 parallel box (looking at the sick clouds gen2, Tugboat Tuglyfe, and even the Hexohm V2 although I know its not technically a mech), as I know that will get my amperage up and will be safer overall.

My questions are: How will this be different from my regulated box? Will ramp up times be slower and will my vapor be cooler? Or is my IPV4S so superior I should just write off mechs all together?

I feel like I've missed out on mechs but they are fascinating to me. I've always wanted one but I don't want to take a step back... does that make sense? Anyway as usual, thanks a bunch VU and love the advice I get here.

A truly mechanical mod has no built in power limit and no electronics to fail. There's also nothing like the feel of using a good tube mech. I think anyone that's gotten into vaping enough to be able to build their own coils should have at least one tube mech with a spring in the switch for backup if nothing else. If I could have only one mod it would without question be a tube mech. Just my thoughts.

Yeah I plan on getting a tube at some point. I've really liked what the parallel 18650 boxes offer. I don't care if the box is MOSFET'd or not, but I'm leaning toward not (I've also been looking into the Cherry Bomber). But I do plan on having at least 1 tube and 1 dual 18650 mech in the collection. All this is sparked because I've been building my own coils since early spring and have never looked back. This past month I went RDA and thats what pulled me off smoking completely. I've had regulated box mods my whole vape "career" and instead of dropping 200$ for yet another regulated box, I guess I want something different.

I'm probably just going to buy one this weekend. I'm going up to my parents place to bring the family up there to see them, so I'll have some time to myself to go to a couple of vape shops and see what they have. I mean really, you never know until you try!

Only one way to find out. Get one. There are many to choose from, the world is yours

LOL yeah I think regardless of what the replies are, I'm going to grab one. Now just gotta find a nice mech box! Kinda funny, after I posted this I read over the "does anyone still use mechs?" thread and that pretty much did it for me...

While I do love my IPV4S.... theres just something about a mech thats very appealing. I think its the looks but knowing that I have full control over it without a circuit board or software or a screwy firmware update is very cool.

A MOSFET isn't necessary if the mod uses a truly mechanical switch. Most use an electronics switch that is really only meant to be used to send signals, not carry large amounts of current. Those devices need a MOSFET. You might know that, but I had to mention it just in case. Happy hunting.

I'm glad you mentioned that. I have learned quite a bit about MOSFET's since diving into mechs. But glad to know they're not necessary in a parallel box.

They are necessary on a parallel box if the box does not have a mechanical switch as boomstick mentions. If it has a wired switch, they are necessary or you will burn up the switch.

Go for it, man! You won't be disappointed (well, maybe a little disappointed as the batteries die out). I prefer mechs (especially tubes) to regulated devices, mainly due to their simplicity.

Ok,

Went up to northern va and bought a Suck Clouds gen 2 parallel box with a single mosfet. I'll attach a pic later.

So far I'm loving it! Getting used to when I need to switch batteries but so far I get most of the day or so out of a pair.
