This dress is blowing up on social media. Some people see a blue and black dress, while others claim to see a white dress with gold stripes.

LOL my daughter got me with that one today. I saw white and gold, she saw black and blue. I finally had to google what that was all about, which of course is all to do with the rods and cones in your eyes (not the 'mood' explanation which is popularly going around). It's pretty fun though!

From my phone it is white and gold if I focused above it or directly on it. If I focused at the very bottom or below it it looks black and blue.

I just see ugly..Plus how the fuck can you see it's true color from a shitty pic...I deal with colors every day being a painter and it's very common for people to see different...plus seeing it on my screen might be different being seen on a different screen...This is stupid!

Granted, my expertise in the way light is refracted is just slightly above the lay person, but it seems that the slight difference in the angle the light enters the eye makes all the difference.
Full-screen the picture, look away for a few seconds and then look ABOVE the picture.
Now, quickly shift your eyes the the BOTTOM of the picture and watch the colors change.
It's fairly easy for me to see both but my wife has trouble. Many times, we don't actually see what we think we see. Our brains fill in a vast amount of information it already has stored to save time. Once it has formed an image, it IS hard for it, in some cases, to 'unsee' that image but with a little practice it gets easier.

Um, it's a dress. This is what goes viral on the internet these days? If it's not toddlers farting in the bathtub, or dogs that can count, it's a dress that people see in different colors. Oh well, I guess the landing of a space probe on a moving comet will have to take the backseat in the internet's consciousness, unless of course the chief scientist wears a loud Hawaiian shirt that some women disliked. Forget the achievement of landing a space probe on a freaking moving comet! The shirt's is more important, so's the dress, so are toddlers who fart in the bathtub and dogs that can count to ten.

Give the dog a job with the European Space Agency, make sure the internet gets a video of him farting in the bathtub while counting and wearing a loud Hawaiian styled collar that is prismatic and changes colors. The internet would break if that happened, twitter would collapse and facebook would go dark due to massive traffic spikes.

I'm bored so I will play along a bit.

I see blue and gold as well.

Honestly don't know how anybody could 'see' the gold as black. If they do, then does anything that is supposed to be gold look black to them? Does the snake in my signature look entirely black to you? Can clearly see what looks like black to the bottom left of the image, right next to the dress. Do the stripes somehow look nearly the same as that dark spot to some people?
Simply copying the image, opening it in any image editor, and zooming it in clearly shows the stripes are gold.

Black cloth will still be black no matter what color of light is shining on it, no matter how bright the lights are.
But white can easily look any other color via reflections, colored lights, or various brightness of light.
And the dress certainly doesn't look like it's made out of some highly reflective material like glossy nylon or PVC.

If your looking at a certain way to make it appear black, then that isn't a representation of the actual color of the dress, it is you purposely tricking your eyes to see it differently. This includes the photo in that link where somebody makes the picture darker. Hey, by that standard, even grass is black because I can take a picture of it on a clear sunny day and darken it via editing.

Just because they can find a blue and black one in a store doesn't mean the original one in the picture is blue and black.
Most clothing is made in more then one color. lol.

Plus, I'm sure the original photographer didn't have high tech equipment to change the lighting and exposure to force it to look different like in that video. Looks like it was with a simple cell phone.
