I will be praying for you and his family. I am sorry for your kid and wish I could do or say more I truly am sorry.

He was an alcoholic, he had, like most of us, lost everything. He could have picked the phone up and called me, and I would have done everything the book and the program has taught me to do. But as you well know, that phone sometimes weighs more than we can lift. There, but for the grace of God, go I. It sounds horrible, but I have often heard, "Others have died so we don't have to.". This just serves as an extreme reminder of how cunning and fatal this disease is. Thank you for your thoughts and prayers, and share Eds story with others so that maybe they can find the courage to stay sober one more day.

I've read your story a thousand times, heard it shared time after time in meetings and it always saddens me.
This disease destroys so many lives in so many ways...
From reading some of the things you wrote, it seems to me that you've been around long enough to know that the best way to honor the memory of your friend is to stay sober, plant seeds where you can and be there when one of those seeds takes hold.
I'm sorry for your loss.
Stay strong. Keep close to others in the program and turn a terrible tragedy into the motivation to spread the message of hope.

Good morning ya'll.

'On awakening let us think about the twenty-four hours ahead. We consider our plans for the day. Before we begin, we ask God to direct our thinking, especially asking that it be divorced from self-pity, dishonest or self-seeking motives. Under these conditions we can employ our mental faculties with assurance for after all God gave us brains to use. Or thought-life will be placed on a much higher plane when our thinking is cleared of wrong motives.'

Hello all. Kinda new around here, hadn't seen this thread till now; I've mentioned it in another thread, but I'm also in this club; 23 yrs sober now -- in fact, Valentine's Day is my half-year mark, so tomorrow will make 23 AND A HALF years sober! :D

What may be clear to all those here, if not to others, is that I chose my screen name because of how names are used in AA -- I'm Andria D there, so I figured online I was AndriaD.

I, and a whole lot of others, are living proof that there is life after alcohol. :)

Thx Dan! In some other thread, the question was asked what everyone was doing for Valentine's Day -- probably nothing much actually, but it's certain that one thing I WON'T be doing is GETTING DRUNK! :D When I hit my first 6 months sober, I realized how cool it was to have my half-year mark fall on Valentine's Day! :D

Thx! That worked!

I think the part that still baffles me is the "before we are halfway through." How do you know when you're halfway through? ;)

But by far the truest is that God (or whatever HP) is doing for us what we could do not do for ourselves -- I was amazed after about 10 yrs or so to find that I literally do not have that compulsion any longer -- I could never have done that for myself, by myself. And I know all it would take to demolish it is one drink, and the compulsion would come roaring back. Think I'll pass on that; it's nice not to be ridden by that feeling of need and feeling unable to do a single thing about it except endure.

I have 2.5 yrs in everyday I'm amazed. I lost the desire before I went to AA. I got hit in the head in jail. I knew there had to b a better way to live. I wld say half way thro, I was on step 9. A lot of stuff just seemed to happen. Even today, if i feel off the beam, I call my sponsor and some how he knows just what to say. So to answer your question. Everyday. The first time idk. It just kinda happened....

Well it was kind of a joke, since sobriety is for life. ;) I really didn't lose the compulsion till I'd been sober about 10 yrs -- anytime something "bad" would happen, I'd still feel the old "god I need a drink"; my husband is really the only sponsor I've had, since he's recovering too, and he and I would discuss it, anytime either of us felt that way -- it was a good "relief valve." My son was a little kid when we quit, but even he was a good resource, when I'd be upset and feeling that need, and he'd pipe up with "you don't wanna do that, mom; think how bad you'd feel if you had to do it all over again." What a kid!

Good evening ya'll

'When we retire at night, we constructively review our day. Where we resentful, selfish, dishonest or afriad? do we owe an apology? Have we kept something to ourselves which should have been discussed with another person at once? Were we kind and loving toward all? What could we have done beter? Were we thinking of oursleves most of the time? Or were we thinking of what we could do for others, of must be carefully not to drift into worry, remorse or morbid reflection, for that would diminish our usefulness to other. After making our review we ask God's forgiveness and inquire what corrective measures should have been taken.' pg 86 AA

Met the love of my life as a sophomore in high school. Lost her to m*th as a junior. After nearly a decade apart that involved my own battle with alcoholism and a failed marriage we reconnected and have been going strong ever since, with a beautiful 10-year-old daughter and, now, over a year removed from cigarettes, that nasty vice that followed through from our past lives.

For those still fighting, just know there's more than just a light, there is indeed an end to the tunnel.
Bro that's awesome ! I was separated with my wife for 12 years due to my alcoholism and drug use. Now we've been together for 9 years. We're both clean n' sober. She was addicted to anti anxiety medication for many years.
