Good morning ya'll.

'On awakening let us think about the twenty-four hours ahead. We consider our plans for the day. Before we begin, we ask God to direct our thinking, especially asking that it be divorced from self-pity, dishonest or self-seeking motives. Under these conditions we can employ our mental faculties with assurance for after all God gave us brains to use. Or thought-life will be placed on a much higher plane when our thinking is cleared of wrong motives.'

Thank you guys for this post. I have been battling a h*roin f**tanyl addiction for over 10 years. Last year I started wanting to live a better quality life. Since then, I have picked myself up so to speak, am a very serious member of AA, and as such practice the steps with my sponsor. Life is hard, I'm struggling very very hard but I'm not going to give up. I have come to far to start over again.

Everything I go back out, I double if not quadruple time spent in the gutter.

Christmas has nearly killed me, a break up I'm going through, yet I still find piece in my recovery and thank God every day I remain strong.

God bless everyone here. Merry Christmas and Happy New year!!!

Welcome, Zombie. Glad you found us.
The most important thing to remember is that what kept you clean yesterday, will keep you clean today. It doesn't matter whether it's the holidays, whether there is drama, or whether things are going great. Addiction is addiction and recovery is recovery.
Keep doing what you need to be doing and let the rest take care of itself.

That is some sound advice brother. I've made such amazing friends here at VU. This is such a close not group. I will always stay on here. I won't be able to get on as much due to phone bill but God's kept it on for me so i can't really complain. Something always happens where if I'm doing the right thing living life as good as possible he makes it happen

I just wanted to add my support and solidarity for any recoverers, especially those new to recovery, now that xmas is upon us; it can be a very stressful and challenging time to stick to sobriety/recovery, with everyone around sipping their cocktails and doctored eggnog -- so hang tough! If you need to abstain from even attending some holiday festivity in order to hang on to recovery, don't worry, xmas comes every year. However much you might crave some of that "holiday spirit"... it's not worth sacrificing your hard work to get to wherever you are in recovery. And besides, when all those holiday spirit partakers are suffering hangovers, you can laugh at them. ;)

One day at a time, even if it's a holi-day-at-a-time. :)

God please let my situation work out. I feel alone, and like giving up all I've worked for. Life steadily shits on me, no matter how hard I try. The old life keeps trying to get me to come back. I understand that I can't win every battle, but to win some would be nice. I need help. I feel so alone.

One thing I'm sure you've heard at 12 step meetings is that you have no control over people, places, and things; the only thing you can control is YOURSELF. No matter what else is going on, no matter how much the world sucks, it's still reality and you have to accept it as it is; if you let events and circumstances outside yourself drive you back to being an actively-using drunk or addict, you've handed those events/circumstances the power to control you. I had to change my "reflex" reaction from "fuck you, I'm gonna get drunk!" to "fuck you, you're not worth killing myself over!"

You can take control of your own self... or you can abandon control... but it's still up to you; no one and nothing can force anything on you if you don't accept it -- even the higher power won't force itself on you; you have to ask foir and accept help if you really want it. But if there's any part of you that still seeks some rationalization for using.... you'll find it, guaranteed. It's only when you forcibly remind yourself evry single day that there is NO excuse for ever doing that stuff again, that you'll develop a new and healthier habit.

Your advice has kept me from falling apart. I know I can do this but it's going to be hard. My case manager is an idiot. I have to find another one. Her literally gives me no warning when something is going to change. I called the place today and might have gotten myself out of having to do a relocation. There was no warning just a note that said moving tomorrow. I know my HP wont put to much on my plate. I think it may have been a mistake. They have me going to a rehab. I just got out of rehab. I have 5 months sober. I'm not going back to rehab style living.

Glad you're hanging in. :) It's hard for me to relate, that "case manager" stuff, since I did it all alone, this most recent time (other than my husband that is, and going to meetings); even when I did the rehab thing for drugs/alcohol, in 1986, it was my own and my ex's decision. Maybe "recovery treatment" is different now.

There's this thing that's often read in meetings, called The Promises; my favorite is and always has been "God is doing for us what we could not do for ourselves," and that's really true; it still sometimes surprises me that I don't have those cravings anymore, at least not usually (when my mom died, different story entirely!), and I know that's the HP doing that for me, because I could never have gotten rid of the cravings all by myself -- the best I could do was hang on tight to not drinking, and going to a meeting every day, for about the first year or so.

Really I think the only thing you can do sometimes, when uncomfortable things are going on, is just realize that maybe there's a reason for it; maybe there's something you need to learn -- whether it's to go along with whatever, or learning how to stick up for yourself as an adult would do, rather than as an addict/drunk/child would do -- as I mentioned in the other thread, you learn by doing -- if you ask for patience, be prepared for things that will challenge your patience; if you ask for help learning to cope with life, expect things that will challenge you to actually learn those skills. ;)

Me as well.

Merry Christmas to all my VUers, And Especially my VUers who are in recovery. Even the guys here who might have a problem. I lived in bandos, under the bridge on 71 Taft St. Exit for 7 years. Relapse and was to prideful to admit I relapsed and get up and dust myself off. 7 fucking years 7 Winters living under a fucking bridge. The minute I started caring and worrying about my life, the way I was, about my family, my daughter who I'll probably never see, I couldn't go on any longer. If I can do this anyone can. Alcohol EDITED BY MODERATOR ... What a dark hole I feel into. My first attempt I made it a month, started using ***ck again. This time I think God realized that he had to intervene and took the will away from me. Not all at once but gradually. God works on God's time. I hated/never believed in God until looking back on those 7 Haggard, lovely, dark years.

Merry Christmas guys. I share my story in part to help that one guy reading through here thinking it'll never happen to him, or he simply cannot do it. I was eating out of fucking dumpsters. Wearing the same clothes for months. I smelled like shit. I was the definition of gutter junkie. You can do this.

Good morning VU

I'm almost at my 6 month Mark. This is the longest I've started SOBER. I had my first sober birthday in 15 years, I turned 30 October twelfth. I had the first SOBER Christmas, New Year's Eve, new years day. I'm very proud. My brother passed away Christmas Eve Frozen solid from an overdose and found the next afternoon. Ugh it has been hard but I can manage. My higher power has a direct and solid relationship and helps my grieving.

I will keep carrying on, I owe this to myself, and all those people who believe in me. If anyone here is struggling feel free to pm me. Vaping helped me get sober and remain sober.

I'm here for anyone needing someone to talk to.

Today I'm grateful for my VU buddies, my parents (even if I feel they don't care) and my amends, and how real that hit me, and started out and kicked off my spiritual Awakening.

Thanks my dude.

I just want people to believe in themselves. It's hard. I just now am coming around into the ability to love myself. I don't see how anyone can get sober or maybe initially getting sober but to have any extended period of sobriety is nearly impossible unless you love yourself. My sole purpose in life is to reach out to individuals who don't believe in themselves. Eventually, your going to have to learn not only to make amends to people you've hurt, but make a very important amends to YOURSELF.

I have literally eaten out of trash cans and dumpsters, for fuck sake I've been so sick from IV drug use that I've shit on myself. Today, I've learned compassion. Because so many times in this rotten world, or so I came to believe, I've been showed compassion.

God bless my fellows, my friends, and of course, my enemies.

I don't often comment here anymore but I have been following the posts.

God willing, I'll have ten years in May and the longer I live in recovery, the more I learn and three of the most important things I've come to realize are
A) The only thing we have is THIS VERY MOMENT and that our lives are a series of moments - one after another. Anyone, literally anyone, can, for just a moment, choose to do the right thing.
B) Recovery is a by-product. If we set out to recover, we can become overwhelmed and begin to doubt that we can do it. Instead, if we do what's right, right now then recovery 'happens'.
C) Life isn't easy but it will be as hard as we want to make it.

I used to worry about staying sober. I worried about finding balance. I worried about the future.
What a waste.
I spent so much time worrying about trying to lead a good life that I forgot to live.
EVERYTHING is about choice. Once we are free of the chemicals and realize that we don't have to use, then it becomes a choice.
Make the right choice as it presents itself and the rest will take care of itself. Choose to do what kept you clean yesterday and you can stay clean today.
The future? Another by-product of the choices we make in this moment.
Thanks for sharing and thanks for being here!

Those are some very very wise words. I think I'd rather just listen to this advice than comment on it. Thank you.

Today, I'm grateful for inspiration, and motivation to live laugh and love, just a little more.
