I just watched what was IMHO a very interesting program on PBS this morning, and after seeing all of the Contests here that are promoting the vendors' pages on Facebook, I thought I would post about it here...

http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/generation-like/

I am new to this forum, but the one I usually hang out at doesn't even allow their registered vendors to promote anything that has to do with another form of Social Media... feeling that the Contests/Giveaways should be for their members only... and a standard with which I totally agree!!

While my feelings about Contests in which the person with the most "Likes" are nothing more than a 'popularity contest' , I must admit that I won one once... although I didn't enter it with that thought in mind.
You sent a photo via email to enter, and I had no idea that they were going to post them on Facebook, but by the time I noticed it, I already had 49 Likes... LOL!! So rather than complain about it, I decided to go for it, and set about calling in every favor from all of my vaping friends that I could.
There was one person close in the running (who I could swear was a shill.. Ha!) which even gave me more incentive to win.

I did win in the end, and I am almost ashamed to say that it gave me quite a rush, and even a feeling of accomplishment... however small. But the Prize involved was your choice of anything they sold on their site... which I already had staked out... but not being a greedy person, was in about the medium price range... ;)

It was an interesting experience, and one I will never do again!!

But I recommend watching that program for any of you old timers like me, those of you who have kids in that age group, or any of you younger people who are caught up in that game of "Likes" on Facebook, Twitter, etc.

Thanks for letting me share/rant... :D

Thanks , watched it , but it's not just kids . It seems to be all ages and facebook knows everyone has an ego , and is that what it's all about ? Vendors see that and see a marketing tool . People put every little tiny thing about their life on Facebook . I for one, do not care if you are walking around your house with a brand new pair of socks on . But if your ego wants likes, or you sell socks it just might work .

Was that actually a rant then? Wow lol

I do think we make too much of a big deal over likes, number of posts, amount of friends and wot not. I don't think it matters if it's a big deal to someone to have a high count. There are members here who readily admit it's their mission to be at the top! And good for them if they find it a fun thing to do.. so long as they don't bitch me up as an interested friend just to get there, if you catch ma drift.

Roaring rant over :)

Ps. I won a competition for being the most stupid lol

Let's take this VU forum, for example. There is a ceiling on the number of "likes" one can attain. Do any of us really think people will stop posting after that point? That would kind of go against the spirit of this community; and to the few who do, most of us would probably say, "good riddance."

I think the majority here enjoy generating topics, responding to topics, getting some laughs, maybe even make some friends (as much as it is possible over the internet). We're talking about an activity and hobby that is a saving grace from something far more deadly, and the enjoyment surrounding these discussions I believe far outweigh any nebulous rewards.

Neither myself, my wife, nor my kids use Fedbook. I am against everything it stands for...No MyFile, No Fedbook, No Tracker, No Stalkit, No NOTHING. As a matter of fact when it comes to social media, I even use throw away phones for when I have to register with a phone number, once my number gets sold to other companies, poof, in the trash it goes. Remember, friends don't let friends use Fedbook.

i am personally tired of the "like" me mentality behind Facebook and to extent the "+" of Google. i just hate trending. i would rather be thanked and that is what i see my likes here as.

The whole point of the 'like' paradigm is not simply to stoke a poster's ego, but to quantify the importance (for lack of a better term) of content.
That, along with expressing agreement, or thinking a post is just damn funny, etc. ;)

To an extent, sure, but the real value is in decompressing all those likes into a scale of most-to-least liked content. To put it another way: promotion of more relevant content. Think of Reddit. Obviously on an individual user's wall or page there's not much which functionally changes, but as a conglomeration of all users' content, the cream rises to a degree. Of course only proprietors know the ingredients of their algorithms, but the effect can be seen more or less clearly among various sites.

This has been a great controversy for a long time. A thorough break down and indepth analysis should be discussed. We've only briefly touched the surface of this dilemma. It's just a matter of time before it's regulated and now is the time to lay out our case and start petitioning before it gets out of hand. Now is the time to act!

In the meantime here's a kitten with a bowtie
