there are times I can think of a Caning or Flogging - or "strapping" - publically - that make more and more sense. (The scene in Starship Troopers, for example, almost made sense).

Yep. We shoulda done that in 2008. Hell, we should have set the precedent back in 1984 with Continental Illinois.

But the reality is, no politician is willing to take the blame for inevitable pain that bank failures would cause. So it won't happen. Instead they'll print however much it takes to paper over the losses.

And if we get right down to brass tacks, we need to admit that fractional reserve banking is an intrinsically dishonest business model which is directly responsible for much of the economic instability that's sometimes referred to as the "business cycle".
