I guess I began early as a social smoker, and ended as a sensual smoker.

Both of my folks smoked (dad died at 68 from smoking related heart disease, mom is 74 and still smokes like a freight train...she doesn't like to vape).

I started @12 yrs old, and smoked for 26 years. The only time I'd ever quit smoking was during a 9 month period while being treated for Hodgkin's lymphoma. During that time, not a day went by that I didn't want a cigarette. 3 months after my treatments were over, I started smoking again.

I truly enjoyed smoking. It was my own little "reward" system for accomplishing tasks, or breaks for time to think, or just talking with people and making friends at "the smoke shack". What I hated was how smoking made me feel in the mornings, and how it made me smell (I never realized how bad THAT was until I quit for 9 months).

Vaping is the only thing I've ever found that freed me from the dangers of smoking while maintaining the joy from the act itself.
Awesome post, Rob! Thanks.

I smoked from 14 to 35 and have been vaping almost three years now. When I started I was Hooke after the first cig and was really easy for a kid to smoke then. A pack of cheap ones was $1.50 so you could always scratch up some change and get a pack. In my thirties I started to feel the bad effects and decided to try vaping. Good thing because I feel great now and lost a lot of weight also.

Which do you find yourself craving more, being amongst good friends (2 or more), or being alone? This will tell if you are an extrovert or introvert, respectively. I am an introvert, yet I have no problem speaking or performing in front of large audiences. It's not about fears, but rather desires.

Hehe both, sometimes I like doing my own thing, sometimes I need to be in a crowd/with friends having fun.....when doing stuff alone for a while I crave time with my friends, after having had a while with my friends I crave to be alone....guess that just makes me just normal LOL

Watching my mom and my aunts when I was little made me want to smoke for the clouds. As for vaping, actually you did honey..

What is @KY_Rob!
I started smoking at 15
And was a 2pad smoker.
I'm not a cloud chaser, More of a flavor and texture junkee.
I want a flavorful, cool, thick sense vape that you could almost chew.
Typically I vape around 50-55w with ss,in tc mode. Dual coil on an RDA or rta.
At times I will go to 80-85 watts with kanthal, to work out some anger issues. But my adv is the ss

When im at a social or work event I go to "tootlepuff mode" and break out a 15w single coil kayfun4

But before you tried it, did you have an internal desire or reason, or was it more a spur of the moment thing.
By the way, I recently read a study about anatabine being implicated as the actual addictive alkaloid in tobacco; if it turns out to be the case, then I'd say you've already overcome any physical addiction, since you won't get any anatabine vaping unless you vape wta. So a tentative "Good on you, mate!"
Nope nothing made me start I never smoked to be cool I tried it cause I saw a cigarette burning instantly addicted to nicotine before vaping I stoped smoking and was addicted to nicotine gum.. Im a nicotine addict

This study is for myself, personally. If used, it will be in an ongoing argument with some of my anti smoking/vaping psychologist friends. Don't worry or be paranoid, my friend; the anonymity of the 'net will protect you. I'm not publishing this or using anyone's name. Just using the figures, mostly.
Thank you for answering, but I'm going to pass.

Thank you, Kimber.
So, did you start just because everyone else was doing it, or did you have a deep seated desire for the smoke? You see, you stated that you started smoking sensually, then listed social reasons, or did you mean that while you started for social reasons, you later became a sensual smoker?
Liking, even loving smoking is not strange at all! Societal dogma and media brainwashing simply try to make the love of smoke wrong in your mind to instill a guilt feeling, because the guilt-ridden mind is easier to control.
I also DIY my own ejuice for myself and others, and I don't bother building, either.
Ahhhh so we're a lot alike! Hmmmm, why did I start? I think because my parents did it and I thought they were the coolest people on earth! Yes my friends wanted to try it too, perhaps a little peer pressure. But I knew almost immediately that I liked it. I like the throat hit, I liked the smoke coming out, I even liked the taste. So I guess I started for social and then became sensual. (Ok that sounds weird!) I simply enjoy it,,, now with vapor I have to have throat hit and I like the clouds,,,as long as they don't fill the room. It's all the best parts of smoking without the toxins (as far as we know). And I simply feel SO much better.

Thanks for the clarification, Kimber. If you really like throat hit, try using the cheapest nicotine out there...it satisfies! We are similar, but one difference is I love a cloudy room! In fact, I could live in a cloud...oh, wait, I do!

I'll tell you what. I will give you an answer. I use nicotine for two reasons. One is for mood control. The other is the pleasurable feeling it provides. I also enjoy the flavors of ejuice.

I reckon, I DIY, but dont pay that much attention,I do use maxvg in everything though.
It's the stuff in fa vape wizard/tfa smooth/fw toner enhancer et. al. that makes vape feel thick in your mouth.

I started smoking young, don't remember what age. Don't really remember why I started, but probably thought it was cool. I didn't even inhale for a long time. Then I started inhaling, and got hooked on the nicotine. I am way more of an introvert. That's why I'm wary of these types of questions. I'm not a cloud chaser per se, but I do like seeing a nice thick puff of vapor. I enjoy the flavor more though. I drip, so I'm direct lung. Using a 0.94 ohm coil, so technically sub-ohmer. Regulated 30w device. Don't care for tanks much at all anymore. Started with cheap cartos and twist batteries and slowly moved up from there.

I actually started smoking on impulse. At some point in my mid-teens, I found a fresh, clean, unopened pack of 305's on the sidewalk. Somebody must've just dropped it. Guess it was fate.

I was the first of my friends to start smoking. Most of them were vehemently against it. They didn't think it was cool at all... ...my girlfriend at the time especially hated it, though little did she know that she would pick up the habit a couple of years later. I was one of those kids who didn't really care about that kinda stuff. I was very introverted and chose to associate with people I liked because I liked them, rather than because they liked me or I wanted to fit in. And if they didn't like me, then they could take it or leave it. It truly made no difference to me in terms of what I decided to do with my time.

Hell, if I wanted to be cool, I wouldn't have smoked! People don't actually think smoking is cool. It's only cool in movies.

All of those anti-smoking lessons and D.A.R.E. campaigns never really had much of an impact on me. All that they did was introduce me to all of these bad things that felt good. I think the way they ream it all into your head has a way of sort of desensitizing you to it. They try to pump so much fear into you that you just kinda become numb to it over the years of repetition.

I always enjoyed the smell of cigarettes. I just figured there must be something to it, so I tried one and found that I really enjoyed it. I liked to play with the smoke and the texture quickly grew on me. It just felt right to me.

I think I really got in deep in my late teens and early 20's. I had always been working, but that was when I first started working outside. I don't know what it is about working outside, but everyone I worked with was a chain-smoker and I quickly became one too. Started going through 2 packs a day and that's where I stayed for a couple more years before I quit.

So I guess I'm the opposite of most. I started for the enjoyment and wound up getting into it more through social influences. The bottom line was always that I enjoyed them, though.

I still vape for the same reasons. I'm mostly in it for the texture and flavors these days - I like a warm, dense, billowy vape. Most of the time, I vape no nic. It's all about the sensation for me. Always has been. The nicotine just made sure that I smoked even if I didn't really feel like it at the moment.

I always take full lung-hits. I used to inhale my cigarettes deeply, too. I was on adderall for a couple of years and let me tell you, it had a way of making me get into the habit of taking lung-hits from cigs. I would kill one in 4-5 drags when I was on that stuff and not even know it. I have not been on medication in years, but some little things like that seem to stick with me to this day.

I started smoking at 16. I was an athlete and hung out with older athletes who smoked, so I started. I vape around 6-8 watts, for nicotine and flavor, not clouds. Even a cigalike produces more 'vapor' than a cigarette does smoke. I don't get the cloud thing...

LOL!! I don't do max vg but I have one juice that someone gave me that's max vg and I use it cuz I like the flavor. But damn, the cloud!! I don't like seeing it hanging in the air. And hubs gets disgusted when he can't see the football game so I don't use that one when he's home. And I turn on the ceiling fan when I use it...gotta spread that shit out!!

Smoking wasn't even cool with the kids back in the 70s when I was young. I tried to keep my smoking a secret from everybody when I started. It wasn't hard, as between moving around, being severely introverted and generally strange, and being of mixed ethnicity, I never had a single friend until I was in high school, and by then I had been smoking for almost 4 years already. I became a chain smoker the minute my mother gave me permission at age 16. I never attended any anti-smoking or anti-drug rallies my schools held, as I was in a special class for prodigies most of the day. I did attend one in high school, though; what ghastly affairs those things are! It's almost like they're trying to get you to do drugs, just so you won't turn out like the presenters.
Well thank you for your detailed answer.

All my juices are 80vg/20pg. My wife is also into the clouds. In fact, when she finishes fumigating a room, she leans back with a satisfied smirk of pride on her face. sometimes, when we get frisky, visibility drops to less than 2 feet in the bedroom, and we're in our own cloud of heaven!

The questions- Did you start for sensual or social reasons?
How old were you?
How does this relate to your personality; are you an introvert or extrovert?
How does this relate to your vaping style: are you a "cloud chaser" or a "tootle puffer"? Sub-ohm or eGo? Lung pumper or mouth-to-lung?

Sensual. I started smoking alone.
Not sure how old I was. I had to ride my bike to the store to buy cigs so before I was 15.
Introvert
I vape 10-11watts and prefer flavor over clouds. Smoking was just self satisfaction. Enjoyable. As is vaping.

aroma molecules, essential oils, and lab grade chemical salts/reagents

You're a bit more... um... advanced... than I am. Hope you've been taking notes. Might come in handy.

I did play with essential oils a bit. Not really fun in ethanol/water, but sometimes it was unavoidable. Never tried retail emulsifiers/stabilizers, although I was tempted a few times.

Since nearly all vapers are current or former smokers, I believe I can safely assume everyone here has been a smoker. That said, I would like to know, for my own study, whether you are an early or late beginning smoker. This is not merely an "age started" thing, but rather a question of motives. Let me explain these categories a little.
Early- Generally start smoking very young, perhaps under 14, but this age line is not set in stone. The more important thing is why they start. People in this category truly desire to smoke before they start. They see grown-ups blowing out clouds, and wish to do it themselves. There is a certain allure or magic to it. If the desire begins before about age 8, they often develop a smoking fetish via imprinting. I personally like to refer to this group as "magical smokers" or "sensual smokers".
Late- Usually start smoking in high school, but sometimes in jr.high or college. Their given reasons usually include: "Everyone else is doing it" and "I want to fit in". In other words, they begin smoking for purely social reasons; hence, I refer to tese as "practical smokers" or "social smokers". I do realize that "social smokers" is usually used to refer to light and occasional smokers, but humor me for the purpose of this discussion.
The questions- Did you start for sensual or social reasons?
How old were you?
How does this relate to your personality; are you an introvert or extrovert?

I am sensual vaper ;) I began smoking at the age of nine. o_O I belong to the Union of Introverts. We unite, separately, in our own homes. :p Not a cloud chaser but I like to vape like I smoked: sometimes slow warm pulls and sometimes hard and fast. :)

You are welcome. Yes. I'm not saying clouds are compensation, but it is one theory. I haven't thought of it in terms of introverted/extroverted, but that makes sense...

Actually, not much of a learning curve if you're making your own extracts already. My wife posted some of my notes as "Know Your Enhancers" around here somewhere. Hope they help.

This is a cool thread. I had my first cigarette at 13 in summer 1994, and by the fall, I was smoking as often as I could. By 15 I was at nearly a pack a day My mother and grandmother were fairly heavy smokers, my dad was a closet smoker. I abhorred it when my mom smoked around me, until I took up the habit. I was instantly taken with the whole idea of smoking, the ritual, the feeling. I'm a classic Myers-Briggs INTP introvert, and loved the quiet relaxation of having a smoke.

I never quit for more than few weeks up until 2012 when I picked up an eGo kit with CE style cartos and quit smoking instantly. Sadly, it wasn't enough to satisfy me for the long term. I kept it up for about a year before smoking again. On September 1st this year I bought sub-ohm gear and threw out my cigs for good, I believe. Now I'm dripping and building and 3mg satisfies me as much as a Camel ever did. I love huge lung hits and clouds for days, don't think I could ever MTL ever again.

Yes, clouds can be a sign of power or force socially, yet a thing of comfort and introspection when alone.

Thank you Vape. INTP huh?...very rare gem, this one is. Strange...when I was very young, I didn't like either of my parents smoking around me, yet anyone else smoking ranged from fascinating to erotic (well, as much as a kid can get).

I am the size of a football player, which is perhaps why I don't need clouds...
Did I miss something what does physical stature have to do with clouds lol. I'm 6'1 and 230 and love clouds and building.
Are we saying clouds are means of compensation? Possible inadequacy? That is stupid... As shit might I add.
