You're correct, you can dry burn 316. My suggestion would be to find the temperature you like first. Then adjust the wattage. Just remember that the wattage controls how fast the coil hits the temperature you set. Once you dial it in to your liking its a great vape. I basically only vape in tc and I find it to be the smoothest most consistent vape out there.

Because I use SS430 I found this quite interesting to say the least.

Unfamiliar with those on the Vt75 and Cuboid...Do tell.
The Big Tank (Big German M1 clone) in 10ml mode is on the VT75 and the Genelocity (German Stil Vapor GENIUS² clone) on the Cuboid.

Shenray put a Velocity deck on the Genius2 instead of the original 3 post.

The Germans do like that industrial look on their RTAs (Flash e-Vapor...) I dug the M1 out the other day and put a pair of twisted SS430 coils in it. I had the stumpy tank on first for testing and once it was wicking perfectly, the 10ml stainless had to go on!

Vaping some strawberry waffle and listening to Rammstein. :tunez:

Has anyone ever used 904L SS for Vaping? I just noticed Crazy Wire carries it. I never heard of it before. Upon doing some research I found out it's an expensive grade of SS that Rolex uses in watches. I can't find a TCR or any mention of it for Vaping.

I know it's bad form but I'm going to reply to my own post (nothing like talking to yourself in public :D:giggle:). I'll be the Guinea Pig. I ordered a roll of SS 904L, 27ga (thickest diameter they carried). I have feelers out about a TCR. If not there is the water test or just cranking it up to 420F and playing with different TCR's until I get fire from dry cotton lol.

Cheers,
Steve

Not bad form- especially when you are offering to do some testing for the group at large!!! Thanks, can't wait to hear what becomes.

Steve, it's perfectly ok to talk to yourself, as long as no one answers you back.

yeah saw that and was curious.. but also have never heard. rolex huh? will be interesting to see what's up with that. Have never heard of the water test.. wonder if a temp probe inside a coil would be an accurate measure.. then adjust from there ?

That article talks about Rolex using it.^^^^. I'll find a link to the water test method I was mentioning and PM it to you because it's on the other forum.

Based on the thermal conductivity I would think that 904L would be even harder to TC than 317L. If you are looking for other grades of SS without a specified resistivity, look for a higher Lambda. Although the relationship between thermal conductivity and resistivity is not specifically linear they do have common escalation.

Well that took all the fun out of that experiment.

If only it didn't have that damn Ni in it.

What's wrong with Ni in your opinion?

Versus Ni200: Titanium, Stainless Steel and NiFe wire has the following advantages:

  • Higher resistance

Enables (much easier) use of thicker wires, twisted wires, dual coils; and in general, just makes building easier

  • Is more accurate for TC than coils of lower resistance

  • Uses less power and therefore less battery

  • Micro/contact coils are possible Ni200 can't be used for micro/contact coils, and this limits certain builds Even though I can now use contact coils again, I find I don't do them the majority of the time because they gunk more. But it's nice to have the option, and sometimes they are the best or easiest build in a given deck. Besides which it's nice not having to be very careful to make sure the coil is 100% spaced all the way around - easier, quicker building.

  • Low, or zero nickel content Some people are allergic to nickel. It is not regarded as hugely safe.

  • Stronger, easier to work with Varies by wire, but generally all the wires are easy to work with where Ni200 is not.

  • Better taste Not something I've noticed, but some people have reported better taste from Titanium and Stainless Steel than Ni200

Re SS904L, I'm a bit curious how it contains approx. 25% nickel and is not magnetic, just thinking......
Perhaps I should check the composition of 316 for a better understanding.
Edit: Ni content is about double in 904 compared to 316/316L, and 316 is not magnetic. Hmm

  • Higher resistance
Could be, not really looking for higher resistance though. Draw.

Not a user of twisted, thicker wires. I have dual coils and on the Supreme building couldn't be easier. -1
  • Is more accurate for TC than coils of lower resistance
Yes, it is. +1
  • Uses less power and therefore less battery
Hmmm, do I run out of battery? No, I don't. Draw.

I haven't done a contact coil in, hmmm, forever. Ok, at least 2 years. Draw
  • Low, or zero nickel content Some people are allergic to nickel. It is not regarded as hugely safe.
I don't do nickle. Draw.
  • Stronger, easier to work with Varies by wire, but generally all the wires are easy to work with where Ni200 is not.
I use SS430. Stronger? Easier? Meh. -1
  • Better taste Not something I've noticed, but some people have reported better taste from Titanium and Stainless Steel than Ni200
Better taste. Not a proven thing. Draw.

Final score, in my opinion, -1. Guess I disagree with your analysis.

I use nickel all of the time. I used it in the beginning for 6 months straight. I bought tempered nickel because everyone said how soft regular Ni200 was. Well after 6 months I was running low and I ordered regular Ni200 to give that a shot. So while I was waiting to get it in the mail, I started to build with Kanthal again. And that has a horrible iron taste to it. And the horrors that people said soft nickel, I found it to be a plus. No more stab wounds for one. And easy to bend into any shape you want was another plus.

I also bought some SS wire. That was going pretty well until I got a horrible smell from it when dry burning. Thinking the smell would go away, I wicked it and vaped it and it tasted just like it smelled. Checked my other SS coils and I could detect a hint of that bad taste from them too. Quit using SS that day. So I've been using Ni200 for the last 6 months again. I also love how stable it is for temperature control.

No question it is very stable (it should be, it has the highest TCR). My main problems with it are it's very soft (not a problem until you go to re-wick it). I also don't like that you can't dry burn it to clean it when needed.
Edit: One last thing I didn't like about Ni200. With dual coil RTA's it was hard to get the resistance above .05 ohms with all but the 28ga Ni200 (that was with 22mm RTA's so 25mm RTA's would be easier).

My SS430 is also stable in TC and I can dry burn it albeit at low power. I don't flame it like Kanthal, just barely get it to glow. I don't notice an off taste.

PS I thought Ni200 tasted better than Ti01 and for sure better than Kanthal. I still have quite a few rolls of Ni200 just in case.

Cheers,
Steve

I will be honest with you Bill. I have never tried 100% Nickel coils, i was just responding to Showerheads post-- "If only it didn't have that damn Ni in it."
I might give it a try after reading your post!

Vape mail day!!!

2 gal of VG an assortment of flavorings but the prize was the Limitless RDTA. Wicking is amazingly efficient not a dry hit and just about through my first tank. Effortless and a fantastic vape. Definitely true to Genny form with a cooler airyer vape. Tons of flavor and great vapor production.

Using the prebuilt twisted coils that it came with around 40-50W seems to be the sweet spot. May increase to see how hot I can go without burning the top cap of course :)

I was one of the first adopter if tc - I had a DNA 40 beta before they went for sale. The choices were nickel or Kathal and that was it.
At the time no one Carrie annealed or tempered nickel and the shit was a pain in the nutsack to work with. It also tasted like a lemon flavored tampon until it was broke in.
Once it was: it was beautifully smooth

Now I won't use the shit because I have stainless steel and stainless steel doesn't taste like tampons.

Just say no to vaping tampons
