I’m starting this thread because, yet again, searches for a topic on VU have turned up empty. Either the search engine is horrible, it isn’t at all user-friendly or, for some bizarre reason it just won’t work on my $1500 laptop.

First off, I’d like to begin this topic by referring to the Element Vape thread on VU:
http://vapingunderground.com/threads/element-vape.109767/page-2#post-1954471

From there on, you can read of my recent experience with a vaping vendor (Element Vape) and a manufacturer (Eleaf).
Basically, I ordered a Temperature Control mod “kit” to test it for two friends that I want to help quit smoking. If I liked it, I was going to order 2 more “kits” for them.

Now, I had seemingly two choices...
1) Purchase a TC mod and search for a compatible TC tank that, hopefully, works well with the mod I’m purchasing.
2) Purchase a kit with a tank and mod that is manufactured and paired together, by the same company. (I suspected this option to be the least expensive)

Well, being I’ve only been vaping since September 1st, 2017 (not an “expert vaper”) and I’ve ordered 2 kits in the past from another company with no issues, the “kit” was the obvious choice. However, this time would be different.
(I’ll get to why I’m quoting “kits” in a minute)

The first 2 TC kits I ordered from Halocigs.com were just that, KITS. They both came with TC coils AND a compatible tank so I could take full advantage of the functionality of the mod that comes with it. Made sense to me so, I went ahead and threw in some extra coils and additional tank with the purchase. I have yet to have ANY problems with either mod, it’s tanks or coils. The tank capacity is too small for my liking but the flavor is better than my Smok TFV12 tanks.
The only reasons I didn’t order these TC starter kits was because I wanted my friends to have a larger ejuice capacity and to be able to vape higher than 80 watts.

After doing some digging through “the top kits” and searching for issues with them, I settled on the Eleaf iKONN 220 TC starter “kit” with the ELLO Sub Ohm tank because I wasn’t able to find any negative feedback or one bad review on it. WELL, HERE’S THE FIRST ONE!

I got my “kit” from Element and right away noticed the mod kept kicking back to wattage mode from Temperature Control, no matter what I did. I had gotten a defective Wismec from Element with the same issue and since the tank and coils came in the “kit” and, I wasn’t exceeding the max wattage of the included coil, the mod must be defective.
I would then get the usual run-around from Element about returning the item and not offering to pay return shipping on a defect until I complain online, of course, then “Kenny” swoops in quelling the bad publicity. (they'll only oil a squeaky wheel)
But this time, they told me I was SOL because the mod was not defective, it was because the tank wasn’t TC compatible. They sent me their address so I could PAY to ship back the coils that were useless to me. Keeping them is financially in my best interest as I’ve paid enough for dissatisfaction.

The exact description on Element’s website is “Eleaf iKonn 220 TC Starter Kit”. Do you see the TC in there??? That means Temperature Control, obviously but, you cannot use TC in this “kit”. THIS IS NOT A TC KIT if you need additional products to use TC! (now you know why I quote “kit”. It has not been described accurately)
If this was stated on Eleaf’s product or Element’s website, IN PLAIN ENGLISH, I would have gone with my 1st option of getting a separate mod and tank, since buying a TC mod is pointless if you’re stuck using it in wattage mode. Both companies, in my opinion, are FULLY aware of this. They got me to buy into a “kit” that isn’t a kit at all, just a scam to get me to pay for an insufficient, included tank, thinking I’d be back for more of their product to make the “kit” sufficient.

I also cannot seem to find replacement gaskets for any of the tanks I own. The tanks would be useful MUCH longer past the life of your included gaskets since only the threads would wear out.
I believe the companies realize this too so, they don’t sell replacement gaskets, knowing you’ll have to buy a whole new tank. $30 for a Smok TFV12, of which 1 of my 4 started leaking and 1 has leaked since day one. Look's and sound's like a money pit to me, and everyone says's vaping is cheaper than smoking?

I haven’t found anyone talking about this topic and am confused as to why this is..... Maybe,
-I’m the only vaper that isn’t rich. Everyone else is more than happy shelling out extra cash, as it grows on their trees.
-I’m the only one that sees’s this issue as a problem. Rich or naive people don’t care.
-There is something I’m seriously misunderstanding.
-I’ve gotten too used to “click to return” ease on Amazon.com and being able to return anything simply because I’m not happy with it, and my expectations of vape companies are unreasonably high.
- This topic is purposely ignored by Vaping Underground

These are the only reasons I could come up with. If anyone could shed some light on this for me that would be fantastic!

The last thread I had started, got bombed with VU staff and moderators swooping in to defend another company I had questioned. PLEASE, BRING IT HERE! I’ve got to hear what you have to say on this matter, as a whole. Especially since Element is one of your top donors this month.

I’m pretty good at distinguishing a valid point from propaganda so I’d suggest an honest response to anyone chiming in.

I don't own the kit but I'll give this a shot:

From the website
Eleaf ELLO Sub-Ohm Tank Features & Specs:

  • 22mm Diameter
  • 4mL Maximum Juice Capacity
  • Superior Stainless Steel Construction
  • Pyrex Glass Reinforcement
  • Eleaf's HW Series Coils
  • 0.2ohm HW3 Triple-Cylinder SS316L Coil - rated for 50-130W
  • 0.3ohm HW4 Quad-Cylinder Kanthal Coil - rated for 40-110W
  • Convenient Flip Top-Fill Design
  • Dual Bottom Airflow Control
  • Delrin Widebore Drip Tip
  • Detachable Structure
  • 510 Connection

It days the kit comes with a kanthal coil and a ss coil. TC won't work for kanthal so:

Did you try TC with the ss coil?
Did you make sure it was in ss mode for TC?

The HW3 (SS316L) is what I used. This is a quote emailed to me by Element:

"The ELLO Tank does not come with coils designed for temperature control mod. It is made for variable wattage mode, as you can tell by the recommend wattage range".

So who's bullshitting me, Element, Eleaf or both?

I just tried 2 of my Smok tanks and both revert to mod back to wattage mode, so it's the unit.
It does this no matter what setting I put it in.

These assholes better give me a refund PRONTO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The TFV12 tank with T12 Duodenary coils.

If the Smok tank won't work with the Eleaf, then that simply reinforces why I bought a kit in the first place.

The T12 Duodenary coils.

A quick Google search is saying they are Kanthal coils and will not work in TC normally. Although there are some MOD's that will do Kanthal TC I am not sure how reliably it works.

Just because element said 316L can't be used in TC (it's clearly can) does not entitle you to a refund from element.

Your beef is with eleaf and as far they will be concerned your mod works how it's supposed to; it doesn't work. You will be lucky to even get an email response from them. My advice would be to install artic fox and do better research on your next mod.

do better research on your next mod.

The unfortunate cardinal rule when buying anything.
Vape gear, especially.
Ask questions to other users BEFORE you buy.
Watch a review or two to learn the basics but ask questions to current owners for their opinions.
take a reviewers opinion with a grain of salt but use them to learn how the mod functions.

That's be because the coils you are trying to use in TC are made from kanthal. I think a lot of your issues steam from confusion.

Maybe you shouldn't be testing out mods for friends until you know what you are doing.

The kit does come with one kanthal coil non TC, and one SS316L Coil which should work in TC mode. So are you saying they gave you two Kanthal coils?

Even if that was the case, if they came in the kit, which is packaged by eleaf, it would still be the responsibility of eleaf.

A simple Google search will show that this is a ongoing problem with Eleaf mods and TC.

And when it says TC kit all that means the mod is capable of using TC not that the kit comes with TC coils. You would need to read the description of what type of coils come with the kit.

If they operate like their joyetech siblings it could also be user error.
Not saying that the mod itself is not the problem, but they can be a tad tricky to setup.

I wouldn't advise them for anyone knew to TC unless they wanted to use them in wattage mode only, or were going to load Arctic Fox anyway.

Vapers need to be a educated consumer with doing research, like reading carefully the vendors product description, and return policy along with watching some You Tube reviews of showing how the mod works, and what comes in the box.

Umm how much research did I do before I purchased cigarettes?
None.
Cigars?
Quite a bit
Vaping?
I'm still researching mods and Ive already purchased over a hundred of them.

Cigarettes and cigars are not a new application of technology. They also don't have moving parts that can fail.
Not sure about others, but before I buy anything electronic, I do research. I want to know what other people think before I turn over money, I also buy knowing that a warranty is only as good as the company that writes it.
If it were me, I would take this as a. Learning experience. If it's good TC you're looking for, I would point you to the voopoo, dna, asmodus, or yihi group of mods.
I would also consider doing what skt advised you of and load Arctic Fox on your eleaf and see if that helps

Which YouTube reviews are funded by the manufacturers and which ones are honest purchases by unrelated people????
I watched a YouTube review of a Dray dried herb vape hosted by some annoying brunette girl, stating it was great! After 2 defects I FINALLY have one that works, and it's NOTHING like that review!

And if this is the kind of BS vaping has to offer, I doubt my friends will quit smoking, let alone will I have the time to properly research and pay for a product before my friend is hospitalized a third time.

Lol, assuming you think I wasn't being sarcastic!

If you think Lung Cancer is something to joke about you should go back to smoking. Plus you want to be a big man and test out MOD's for people to use to quit and you think they should start with TC Boxes. Good luck I thought I would try and help but not worth the energy to type.

Not to sound ungrateful but I still have this problem with trying to find both my friend and his girlfriend a reliable, COMPLETE TC mod kit, still have to test it before I decide if it's right for them and am stuck with a mod I didn't need and isn't the right one for my friends.

I paid for a TC mod that doesn't work. Should I, or my "oblivious to vaping" friends with no computer, be responsible for fixing it?

This exactly why you shouldn't be testing stuff out for your friends. You don't fully understand what you are doing and will pass those frustrations and negative views about vaping to your friends. It could potentially save their lives so don't let your lack of understanding ruin it for them.

DICK HEAD.....
I gave them a marker-style vape I had, asshole. I'm looking for a more permanent solution to two of them sharing one vape.
I outgrew my pen vape into my Triade DNA 250's and would think long term, a TC mod would take them farther. Shouldn't I make sure they don't outgrow the money I'm spending for them? I want to get them started, not fund them for life.

I'm trying to do a good thing but cannot afford to buy them 2 Triades. I'm even typing them up a "cliff notes to vaping" info sheet to help.
What else am I supposed to do?

Not to be captain obvious or anything, but you've been options around your current situation.
Take them or don't take them the choice is yours.

However, if your reason for purchasing this was to test it.... And you don't like it.... Wouldn't that mean the test failed and it's time to move on to something that will pass your test?

Perhaps it's time to take a step back figure out that went wrong and how to precent failing again.

Just my personal opinion, so take it for what it's worth (probably not much!)... But I think the entire "TC" fad is pretty much a scam. I've tried it with titanium with one mod, with stainless with a couple other mods... and I really didn't care for it at all -- for those who vape at very low wattage, apparently it's useless -- which seems weird to me, you'd think we'd be one of the major target-audiences for this technology, but apparently not. I also could not get much at all for flavor with either titanium or stainless wire; kanthal beats 'em both by a very long mile.

As for your particular quandary... you really don't need any special atty to use TC; the important part is the wire you use for the coil. Now, if you're not making your own coils, obviously you'd be limited to those attys that have replacement coils in the proper wire type; that's really the only special thing about TC, the wire of the coil -- all metals have different natural resistances, and the amount that the resistance changes with heat is the important aspect; kanthal's resistance doesn't vary much with heat, so it's not suitable for TC, except in certain rare instances.

And the other aspect... as you've unfortunately discovered... not all "TC Mods" will actually perform in that mode with any accuracy or reliability. Just another thing I dislike about it; apparently you have to spend significant cash to get a mod with the proper chip to actually vape accurately in TC mode. Are you seeing the scam factor yet? ;)

I got my son started with vaping in July. He was wild to try out TC, use the stainless wire (I got him started right off, building coils, rather than wasting money on replacement coils which are mostly total crap).... He really tried, with several different mods and attys... coil after coil... He's in school to become an electrical engineer, and has a 4.0 GPA, so clearly, NOT dumb by a long shot. And he can't make it work. He now builds .5 ohm coils with 26ga kanthal, and vapes at about 20-ish watts. It's a vape he can depend on.

Again... JMHO.

Don’t send him over to mech....he doesn’t want to research anything before he buys it. Love my mech mod and should have my stabwood here in a couple weeks. Took me 3 months of research and another month to get everything needed
Negative cap, I wouldn't dare send a mech to anyone that doesn't know how to use it, safely.
I try to recommend the right mod for the right user.

I just meant don’t give him any ideas.
LMAO! Best idea I can think of is something like a tesla Invader 3 or I joy maxxo - something else with a pot and safety features.
No frills, no options nothing to think about.

I'm sure I'll get cussed out for this because it seems that what you do when you don't get the answer you want or validation because you you chose not to do research into the products you bought. I applaud you for wanting to help your friends, but at the same time you've only been vaping since September. 2 months hardly qualifies as an expert. If you really want to help them get them a starter kit preferably at a brick and mortar shop where they can explain the product to them and then let them choose their own vaping path. Yes that path may vary from yours. My personal path has taken me a long time and, yes I've spent a lot of money to get to where I'm very satisfied. If you have found your perfect vape in two months that's awesome, but you are in the minority. Most go through many mods and atomizers until they fine what works for them. If you really want to help your friends stop trying to hand them the keys to the ferrari until they've learned to ride a bike.

As to your beef with Eleaf / Element Vape I'll just say chalk it up to a learning experience and find a manufacturer an vendor that you're more comfortable using.

Good luck.

Indeed I am! That's why I started this thread. Unfortunately, everyone seems to accept this instead of speaking out/doing something about it.

I'm avoiding coil building purposely because it WILL frustrate the hell out of someone with ADHD! Plus, the replaceable coils are the best route for my friends, I feel. They were homeless for a while so a desk with coil building supplies and, expecting them to learn how to do it is out of the question.
I don't want to discourage them.

Not sure anything CAN be done about it, except just stick with tried and true methods; the fads will fall by the wayside -- like fidget spinners. :giggle:

You're probably right about the replacement coils for your friends; that's how I started too, with the little kanger botton-coil clearos; it's the path of least resistance for someone starting something completely new to them. But for yourself; you'd be surprised. My son and I both suffer from ADD, and really, if you can tie your shoes, and have reasonably good near-vision (or have decent reading glasses!), you can build and mount decent coils. They don't have to be fancy; they just have to vaporize ejuice, and the quality of coils you make yourself is far superior to anything you can buy -- my juice is a gunk monster, I have to dry-burn them at least weekly, but my coils last a month or sometimes more. It frees you from the vagaries of manufacturers, the postal service, or idiots in shops -- or the money to afford to buy them, because buying wire and cotton is dirt cheap, comparatively. It enables you to ALWAYS be able to find something to vape, rather than having to resort to disposable cigalikes or god forbid, cigarettes. It puts YOU in charge of your vaping, not some wage slave watching a conveyor belt who just wants to go home and get drunk and doesn't give a rat's ass for you or your vape. :D Ditto that about ejuice, too.

First, you didn't act like some people did and lash out at me for voicing something I felt wasn't right. You were respectful so I owe you that much.

I got lucky with my 2 Triade 250's but I cannot afford 2 more, plus tanks, coils and batteries for both of my friends.

My friend's girlfriend has been hospitalized twice in the last month and a half so yes, I'm crunching time to get them both good setups. However, I also want to save them / myself money down the road, in case their vape preferences expand. I’m struggling for the happy medium.

Also, I’ve never claimed to be an expert on anything but I have been online everyday trying to educate myself as much as possible about everything vape.
How much do I need to know before helping a friend, or 2?

By the way, wasn’t me switching to vaping and, quitting smoking a good thing to do before becoming an expert?

You could maybe try using wattage mode for now?
You never know they may like wattage mode better.

Some subohm tanks have an extra set of gaskets in the box but it's underneath everything so you may need to pull all the foam / plastic stuff out of the inside of the box to find them.

Took me a full six months to figure that out when I used to use Uwell Crown tanks.

Yes I agree with you that quitting smoking before becoming an expert was great. If you are buying vape equipment for someone and it is around 50 watts or higher then they will be able to see if they like it and should appreciate it. I was lucky and a friend gave me a eleaf 50 watt with a kanger tank. I used it for a couple months no problem and my wife has used it for 6 months. It works and I did not need anything more. Many people on the forums do not vape over 40 watts. I was lucky and did not want to vape higher watts. I have never used TC and never plan to. Watts mode has worked for me.

This is when research is needed. When you want to use advance setting like TC, building coils, using mech mods, mixing your own ejuice. These things can harm you if not done correctly. These things can save you a much of money if done correctly though.
