Supplements Help Repair Cells

By Dr. Mehmet Oz and Dr. Mike Roizen, MDs

The comedian Andy Kaufman used to lip-sync part of the 1950s "Mighty Mouse" cartoon theme song: "Here I come to save the day!"

Well, another mighty mouse — several, actually — recently made their debut in a study published in the journal Nature, titled "Nicotinamide Riboside Preserves Cardiac Function in a Mouse Model of Dilated Cardiomyopathy."

One day they might save the day, too, for your heart and brain.

Special: Dr. Crandall Saved His Own Heart With This

Mitochondria, the power plants in each cell of your body, enable every cell's healthy metabolic activity. If they can’t deliver the energy your body needs, various organ systems suffer.

It's now known that as we age those mighty mitos may not get the support they need from a coenzyme called nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide, shortened to NAD.

But according to that Nature study, boosting NAD by taking its precursor, nicotinamide riboside (a form of niacin or vitamin B-3) may help repower the mitochondria and protect aging organs and the brain.

The researchers reported that mice with heart problems have lower NAD levels — as do humans with heart diseases.

Furthermore, they said that giving mice more nicotinamide riboside improves their heart health by restoring NAD levels.

And even more amazing, once the mice had more fuel for their mitochondria, they became Mightier Mice.

The NAD boost also improved memory impairment, which is very encouraging.

Can Mushrooms Help Prevent Prostate Cancer

Mushrooms are one of the most underrated foods, in my opinion. Mushrooms are flavorful and versatile. They can be grilled, sautéed, roasted, and eaten raw. And on the nutritional side, they are packed with many vital nutrients.

What is the Science Behind Eating Mushrooms and Prostate Cancer?

A study by the International Journal of Cancer, got much attention because of its simple message: more mushrooms equals less prostate cancer.

This study looked at 36,000 men ages 40 to 79 for a period ranging from 13 to almost 25 years. Afterward, the researchers found that men who consumed mushrooms once or twice a week—an average of about 3 ounces per serving—had a lower risk of prostate cancer compared with those who ate no mushrooms. Men eating mushrooms three or more times per week dropped their risk to 17%.

The researchers noted that mushrooms contain high levels of an amino acid called ergothioneine, which works as a powerful antioxidant and may play a factor in fighting cancer.

Of course, the study only showed an association and not causation, yet the findings still stand out because they included such a high number of men studied for a long period of time.

Also, this is not the first study to show a connection between mushrooms and prostate cancer. For example, research in the September 2015 issue of Cancer found that taking white mushroom powder helped men lower their prostate-specific antigen (PSA) levels. The mushroom powder also reduced the risk of PSA recurrence after treatment for prostate cancer.

What this means for you

So, what does this mean? First, mushrooms appear to play an essential role in prostate cancer prevention and co-management.

I advise you to enjoy mushrooms in food and quality dietary supplements whenever you can. According to the Japanese study, Shiitake, white button, oyster, maitake, and king oyster mushrooms have the highest concentrations of ergothioneine.

I frequently prescribe reishi mushrooms to my patients with prostate cancer. One meta-analysis found that people who added reishi extract to their regular anti-cancer regimen were more likely to respond to chemotherapy or radiotherapy than those who did not. The scientists believed that reishi might stimulate immune cells and help create a powerful microenvironment more hostile to Cancer.

Another popular anti-cancer therapy in Japan for immune strengthening is the fermented mushroom extract active hexose correlated compound or AHCC.

Our XY Wellness Members take Loads of Mushroom

As you know, all mushrooms are highly ranked food in the XY Wellness Diet. Eat them often. Our members are also taking reishi mushroom in ImmunoPCTN, AHCC. So, you are covered if you consistently take any or a combination of these nutraceuticals. Oh, and by the way, as you know, keeping a robust immune system is critical to lowering the risk of viral infections of all kinds, including the current one causing the pandemic. So, eating mushrooms and any of the above-mentioned dietary supplements will also help.

When the temps are high and the sun is blazing, the first thing we usually reach for is a big glass of water.

But here’s the thing…

💧Water alone isn’t always enough to hydrate your cells.

To actually absorb and use the water you drink, your body needs electrolytes, like sodium, potassium, and magnesium.

Without those minerals, water can move right through you… without delivering the hydration your body is craving.

If you’ve been feeling tired, bloated, headachy, or unusually hungry or thirsty, those can all be signs of hidden dehydration.

So what helps you stay truly hydrated? ✨

Here are a few simple, nourishing ways to hydrate smarter:

💧 Add a pinch of high-quality sea salt + a squeeze of lemon to your water
💧 Use mineral drops or an unsweetened electrolyte powder (like LMNT)
💧 Enjoy hydrating foods like cucumbers, watermelon, citrus, berries, and leafy greens
💧 Drink herbal teas like peppermint or hibiscus (delicious iced!)
💧 Avoid sugary or caffeinated drinks that can deplete hydration

Want to learn more about electrolytes and why we love LMNT? We wrote a full blog post for you here.

mail
Try this hormone-friendly hydration booster:

DIY Electrolyte Drink
(no sugar, no junk!)
  • 2 cups filtered water
  • Juice of ½ a lemon or lime
  • Pinch of sea salt (Celtic or Himalayan is best)
  • Optional: 1–2 tsp coconut water or a few drops of trace minerals
  • Optional: A splash of aloe juice or a sprig of mint for extra cooling
Stir it up, sip throughout the day, and feel the difference! Your energy, digestion, and even mood can improve just from better hydration.

This is your reminder that hydration is a form of nourishment and your beautiful body deserves to feel supported, even on the hottest days.

Your Body's Hidden Cleaning System
ever wonder why some days you just feel... heavy?

Let me tell you about your body's most underrated system.

Your lymphatic system.

Think of it as your body's garbage collection service.

Every day, your cells throw a party. And like any good party, there's mess afterward. Dead bits, toxins, cellular confetti that needs cleaning up.

That's where your lymph comes in.

Lymph is basically a clear, yellowish fluid that flows through your body like the world's tiniest janitor crew.

They're working 24/7, mopping up the mess your cells leave behind.

But here's the thing that blows my mind:
Your lymphatic system doesn't have it's own pump.

Your heart is like a Ferrari engine, pumping blood around your body.

But lymph? It's more like a lazy river. It relies on you moving around. Deep breathing. Your muscles giving it a gentle squeeze.

When you breathe shallow (which most of us do all day), the trash starts piling up like bins on strike day.

That's when you feel:

- Heavy and tired
- Brain foggy like you're underwater
- Achy joints
- Generally "meh"

But when you breathe properly? Deep, full breaths that move your diaphragm like a bellows?

Your lymph starts flowing like a mountain stream after snow melt.

The waste gets flushed out. Your energy returns. You feel lighter than air.

Here's one of my favorite lymph breathing videos. Give it a go now.

[Link Here for my guided breathing video]

Just 5 minutes. That's all it takes to get things moving again.

Your body will thank you for it.

And you'll wonder why no one ever taught you this stuff in school.

Breathe well, my friend.

How to reduce inflammation and decrease your risk for heart disease, stroke, diabetes, chronic pain, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, certain cancers, and arthritis.

We’ve all heard the phrase, “you are what you eat.” And guess what, it is true. Unfortunately, many of us have habitually eaten foods that have caused our cells to become filled with unhealthy chemicals known as eicosanoids. Inflammatory eicosanoids are associated with several common diseases, including fibromyalgia, heart disease, stroke, diabetes, arthritis, cancer, and chronic pain.

Amazing Food Science Discovery: Edible Plants 'Talk' To Animal Cells, Promote Healing

A groundbreaking new study published in Molecular Nutrition & Food Research titled, "Interspecies communication between plant and mouse gut host cells through edible plant derived exosome-like nanoparticles," reveals a new way that food components 'talk' to animal cells by regulating gene expression and conferring significant therapeutic effects. With the recent discovery that non-coding microRNA's in food are capable of directly altering gene expression within human physiology, this new study further concretizes the notion that the age old aphorism 'you are what you eat' is now consistent with cutting edge molecular biology.

I’m not talking about junk food.

I’m talking about real fats your spine actually needs to feel better.

It’s all about the type of fat you eat.

Some fats fuel inflammation.

Others help calm it down, support healing, and improve nervous system function.

Your spine runs on these signals.

And the right fat can strengthen those signals and protect your joints from the inside out.

But most people get this part completely backwards.

I’ll break down which fats help and which ones silently work against you.

It’s helped people who’ve had back pain for years finally make real progress.

And no, it’s not about doing more.

It’s about eating in a way that supports a better-moving body.

Watch it now and see what’s been missing from your spine-health routine.

Higher Biological Age May Raise Dementia Risk

People whose bodies are aging faster could be more likely to develop dementia than those with normal or slower aging, a new study says.

Folks with advanced biological age are about 30% more likely to develop dementia, compared to those whose bodies have aged closer to how long they’ve actually been alive, researchers say.

People with advanced biological age also had changes in their brain associated with dementia, such as brain shrinking, according to findings published April 30 in the journal Neurology.

“These brain structure changes explain some, but not all, of the association between advanced biological age and dementia,” Yacong Bo, lead researcher with Zhengzhou University in China, said in a news release.

Special: Doctor Finally Discovers Natural Secret Weapon Against Aging

“These results support the hypothesis that advanced biological age may contribute to the development of dementia by causing a widespread change in brain structure,” Bo added.

Biological age reflects the aging of a person’s body as damage accumulates over time, while chronological age is based on a person’s birthday.

“While none of us can change our chronological age, we can influence our biological age through lifestyle factors such as diet and exercise,” Bo said.

For this study, researchers analyzed medical data on nearly 281,000 participants in the UK Biobank, a long-term health study of United Kingdom residents. The people had an average chronological age of 57 when the study began.

Nearly 4,800 developed dementia during an average 14 years of follow-up, researchers said.

The team estimated people’s biological age using two different established measures that considered such factors as lung function, blood pressure, cholesterol, and blood chemistry factors.

The methods show how different parts of the body work together as people age — metabolism, the immune system, the major organs, and other systems.

Results showed that people with higher levels of biological aging were 30% more likely to develop dementia, after accounting for other factors that can affect dementia risk like age, education level, and smoking.

MRI scans of people’s brains showed that those with advanced biological aging also had shrinkage of their gray matter, where information processing happens.

Research continues to show that optimal levels of vitamin D can reduce the risk of several cancers, including breast and colorectal, while also strengthening the immune system and lowering inflammation. It’s a small nutrient with big impact. "
