| Hi Jimi, When someone is diagnosed with cancer, it’s completely natural to feel fear. In an instant, your internal dialogue can change. You might find yourself thinking: “How long do I actually have?” “What if the treatment doesn’t work?” “I’m afraid of the next scan.” These thoughts are human. But what many people aren’t told is that this ongoing fear can begin to affect the body in deeper ways than we realize. Discover how to move from “Survival Mode” back into “Healing Mode” here. You see, your body is constantly shifting between two states: Survival or Healing. And when those “what if” thoughts become constant, your body can remain stuck in survival mode. In research, this is often referred to as Fear of Progression (FoP), which is the ongoing fear that things may worsen over time. Studies have shown that when this state becomes chronic, it can dysregulate your body’s central stress response system, the HPA axis. When that system is overstimulated, it begins to influence how your body functions physically, including how it responds to treatment. This isn’t just emotional. It’s biological. Because when your body is constantly signaling threat, it shifts its resources toward protection, not repair. This means: Your body is not prioritizing recovery. Your immune system is not operating at its full capacity. Your internal environment becomes less supportive of healing. Simply put, your body cannot prioritize repair and recovery while it feels chronically threatened.
