Hi Jimi

The Thriving Gardener Garden Masterclass Series continues. đŸ„ł

If you joined us live—thank you for being part of such a thoughtful and inspiring session.

And if you missed it (or want to revisit your favorite parts), the replay is now available!

>> Watch the replay today đŸŽ„

One of the biggest takeaways from this training with Michael Kilpatrick is this:

Most landscapes are designed for how they look
But the most rewarding ones are designed for what they give back.

That might mean strawberries tucked along a border, elderberries lining a fence, or perennial herbs woven into your existing beds—simple shifts that turn your yard into something both beautiful and productive.

In this masterclass, Michael walked through:
  • How to blend food into your existing landscape (without starting over)
  • The best high-impact plants to start with—like berries, rhubarb, and perennial herbs
  • Smart strategies for placement, layering, and low-maintenance design
  • Practical tips for soil prep, watering, and pest management
  • How to choose the right plants for your climate, space, and conditions

The live Q&A alone was worth watching—covering real questions about sandy soil, shade, overwintering, containers, and more.

If this sparked ideas for your own space, you can also grab some of the plants Michael shared—many are already running low for the season:

If you’re ready to start planting, you can explore the exact plants Michael shared—many are already running low for the season:

If I see any they will become bait

He says in the video they don't work for fishing bait. They drop segments until they're free.

Hard for me to imagine them surviving cats though, drawing all that attention to themselves by staying on the surface of the soil and flopping around.

Someone on reddit was talking about using one of those firey things you get to make caramelized sugar on the creme brulee, and using it on the jumping worms. As dry as things get around here, I know you'd have to be very careful with that, but the jumping worms eat everything good--plants, compost, mulch, leaf litter, leaving behind their castings.

Well apparently jumping worms taste nasty, so predators of regular earthworms will spit them out. However: BINGO! It says on Housedigest.com:

Experts have observed that some rodents, including moles, squirrels, raccoons, and chipmunks, will eat jumping worms. This might be an excellent natural solution. It's true that rodents can be somewhat destructive in the garden, disturbing soil and eating plants. But this is preferable and easier to deal with than the impact of jumping worms, which can make your garden inhospitable for plants and wildlife alike.
