Can you imagine if they were privy to Dr F's recent study...

My personal paranoia about undiscovered ('potential') harmful effects of inhaling flavorings is part of my reasoning behind keeping my flavorings as light as possible. It sounds like the man who died ('oil was found on his lungs') was vaping oil-based flavorings.

And gee, butterscotch flavor with diacetyl - just like Flavor West.

The type of pneumonia the fellow had is especially found in people who vape oil based flavorings.
Lung obliteration is caused by diacetyl.

It will be similar to provaris "blemished" mods. Some will have a bit more than others. And sometimes it may not have much bite at all. It's something we are just now trying to work on, so ymmv. But we thought at $60 it is a decent deal.

I need a non-fruity cream vape. Maybe in the family of dulce de leche, flan, creme brulee etc. Anybody here went down this route?

Yeah - that's my #1 preference - sweet and creamy!
Vienna Cream, Catalan Cream, Custard, sometimes Caramel, sometimes Fresh Cream, sometimes a tiny bit of Butterscotch, occasionally Marshmallow or Meringue...and of course the FA vanillas. I vape those in combinations all the time for my sweet-creamy cravings. You can make them into gelato/custard, ice cream, pudding - all the good sweet, creamy stuff. ...Irish Cream, Rum, or Tiramisu end up in mine a lot.

The average is about 6 months in plastic especially for fruit molecules. Keep em cool and in the dark, preferably in glass, and you will probably get roughly a year without too much degradation. I would say after 12-18mos. They have definitively lost some oomph...

Allow me to say, very organized! I've been exploring organization solutions. Nothing better than plastic bins for me though...

Mine are all on a shelf in the kitchen, but in so cal it can get pretty warm even when the a/c is on, particularly if I have the oven on. Would it hurt/benefit them to keep flavorings in the fridge (not that I have room with a teenager in the house)?

I keep a piece of sandpaper handy for when new flavors arrive. A few seconds rub removes the triangle pattern on the cap so a permanent marker can be used. Vb for Vanilla Bourbon etc. tightly packed upright in a small bin or box and not too hard to locate.

oooohhhhhh you guys got to try this one, started off as the black cherry raspberry and ended up being this. dont have a name for it. if you try it and like it give it a name before I do and Ill throw it in the recipes. shake and vape

1.5% cookie
1.5% cherry
1% brandy
.75% blackcurrant
.5% meringue
.25% fuji apple
.25% anise

Made this yesterday and vaping it now - but I made the recipe in 10mls, not 12, because I know you have more sensitive tastebuds than I LOL It's a good vape, but I might try it a little higher next time so I can taste at least a hint of cookie - because I'm not tasting it, and I love cookie! Or maybe it needs to sit a little longer? At any rate, yum!

Refrigeration promotes separation.

When I first started vaping I mainly vaped dessert flavors.

Now its mainly a mix of my rty4, energy drink and occasionally chai tea. I just discovered HICs tic tac. Drinks seem to be the flavors I go back to.

I also like coffee. Once in a while I'll add few drips of kona cream to the tank I'm vaping the ry4.

Back in the day I would add samboca to my coffee. Has anyone tried anise in espresso? Or brandy in coffee? Or maybe watermelon with rum?

I don't mind sharing at all. Recipe is on my laptop at home. I'm pretty sure its about 8% chai tea room TFA. 3% distilled water and a vanilla something or other and creamy something.

I'll share tmwr when I get home.

LOL. Sambuca days are long gone for me. But I still like that flavor and a black coffee.

Thinking it will need a dash of cream to tone down anise so it doesn't take over the coffee.

LMK if you try?

I might use, say, .5% or so FA Licorice in a addition to the anise. It's a little sweeter and a bit more syrupy.

FA Strawberry...

What say you all? TFA Strawberry tastes like PEZ, which is good when you want PEZ, but not when you want strawberry. Is FA like their other stuff... more "real" tasting?

Speaking of "tasting". I hate when restaurant folks ask, "how is your food tasting?". I'm always thinking, "unless my food has a tongue, I have no idea."

Perhaps you could just pretend they are referring to the event of a food tasting.

I usually don't like strawberry flavors, but I find FA strawberry to be pretty good. To me it has a semi-sour, realistic flavor. I am by no means a connoisseur though. (Cap) sweet strawberry is good if you want a strawberry candy type.

That's what I was hoping. I guess I should just order it.

I find it to be a ripe, fresh, realistic strawberry. It's borderline too real for me in some recipes..

It's not easy! When I find info from a reliable source, I just add that to my flavors spreadsheet. I don't have a list of links. FA no longer provides the info on their website, but you can find screen shots and references to the percents they used to list from 2010-2011, when they first started reformulating their flavorings. I linked to a few of those sources over on ecf. Just FYI, the last percentage of diacetyl FA listed for a few flavors: Croissant 0.074%, Malt 0.01%, Butter 1.5%, Condensed Milk 0.5%, Yogurt 1.6%, Pandoro 2%, Panettone 2%. (None were ever listed over 2%). Champagne was listed at 0.012%, and only recently reformulated for addition to the e-cig flavorings. So you can see how very little it takes for FA to add that inhalation warning.

TFA's info is on their website, though not all flavors have been tested. http://shop.perfumersapprentice.com/specsheetlist.aspx For example, scroll down to Vanilla Custard, click 'list' on the far right. Add up the percentages for Acetoin and Acetylpyrazine (sometimes written acetyl pyrazine). That flavor has between 2-20%. They don't list with more precision than that. On that screen, you can click on any ingredient name and see a list of all TFA flavors that use it (then click 'list' for each one to see the percentages). The lowest percentage they show is "<.5%". I suspect they do not test to the thousandth-of-percent as FA does.

Regarding Flavor West, it was a huge blowup earlier this year. Their flavorings said "diacetyl-free" right on the label and website, but a Canadian vendor paid to have an independent lab test FW Caramel Candy, and it was loaded with it. Flavor West then began removing the "diacetyl-free" claim from bottles and some pages on their website. It was discussed a lot over on ecf. Many of their other flavors are highly, highly suspect. I don't remember if/which others were lab tested, but FW has proven it's simply not reputable, IMO.

I don't know if Capellas ever formally stated that they use any diacetyl at all. They say they're removing it from some of their flavors (therefore, it was there until now, right?) They will not release any ingredient info or numbers, period. Far better diplomats than I have tried and failed.

For my own (and partner's and friends') purposes only, I rely on my own nose/stomach. If there's ~ 2% or more diacetyl in a flavoring, I can clearly smell it. Vaping it upsets my stomach; at high enough percentages, I almost get physically ill. I wrote repeatedly on ecf about FW Caramel Candy giving me that reaction before the flavoring was tested. I knew the same about several TFA flavors before their test results were available. That nauseousness hasn't failed me yet - always means there's lots of diacetyl/subs. If it's low enough, I can't tell, so some slip past me. Several of TFA's with custard notes do not give me a reaction at all, but I've never gotten nauseous from one and found it to have no/low custard notes. I have 20 or so Capellas I "know" contain over 2% diacetyl, just from my reaction though. I was using them in coffees for a while, but now even that makes me a little woozy. The diacetyl smell in some is so strong, I smell it even in public, in other vapers' exhaled vapor. Anyway, my nose/stomach have proven reliable for TFA and FA flavorings that have published numbers, so I rely on my senses for others, too. It's totally anecdotal, opinionated evidence, so everyone can feel free to totally ignore this paragraph. My catchphrase online is always "likely contains some custard notes" - means it makes me ill, but without lab tests, I can't guarantee I'm right.
I know I'm late to this discussion but the diacetyl topic came up in a historical brewing group I'm in on facebook - many modern beers don't want diacetyl in the end result but some historically used recipes and flavor descriptions state its required to be an accurate taste - this article was linked and may help others know what to expect as far as the taste you're stating you can tell exists - http://www.professorbeer.com/articles/diacetyl.html

Yes (yum), yes (yum), and no. FA's spices and alcohol flavors find their way into lotsa my recipes. (currently vaping lemon-cardamom cookies)
