Every year the winter holidays give me both a sense of excitement and a feeling of peace, not because of any particular religious sentiment, though I do believe the elements of religious faith express what happens inside of us; the new child born in our hearts for another chance at innocence and joy; the miracle of light at the darkest time of the year; the sharing of what we have. Peace comes because people have time off to be together, so we're seeing friends and relatives we only see during the holidays. We're wrapping gifts for our loved ones, making delicious things in the kitchen. We seem to put our cares and our differences on hold for the time of celebration. The world is shining with the lights on trees and houses, sparkling through windows, all which seem to represent hope.
Here is this year's parade of winter holidays:
Chanukah begins at sundown December 18, will end at sundown December 26.
Winter Solstice December 21
Christmas December 25
Kwanzaa begins December 26, culminates on New Years Day
New Years Day January 1, 2023
Reply if I left any out.
I really backlash against the idea that you have to spend a lot of money and have flashy displays for it to be holiday time. Ever see what happens when you give a kid a dollar package of brightly colored drinking straws? Got clothes people have admired that don't fit any more? Maybe a friend would still love to have that silk sweater you never wear anymore. My favorite true story is of a friend who drew a name, but was too broke to buy a gift, so she cut fabric from old clothes to make Barbie outfits for the little one whose name she drew, who carried around a naked Barbie doll.
This year, specifically with this game thread, VU has become a community whose presence I feel in my heart. I wish everybody a warm, bright, happy and abundant holiday season, whatever you celebrate, wherever you celebrate.
