Question for everyone, totally unrelated to anything at all, so it's totally appropriate.... what anti-virus does everyone use? I've been with Norton's for a long time, it's about to expire. I've had no issues, but it's like $70 to renew. You realize I could go nuts with that for vape purchases! Priorities, you know.

Check what your Internet Provider account might provide, my Comcast Internet comes with free McAfee for like 5 computers. it can be a pain to find though. Let me know if you need help finding it.

Did that once. Won't do it again. I could hardly access anything, much less a control to change any settings that were compromised. Then, uninstalling it was a bigger PITA. Glad yours works well for you, though. Ours was terrible.

Honestly only run it on my Son's computer. He's always installing crap on his that causes all sorts of adware and funky search bars. Actually have restore the thing from an image a couple of times a year because it is easier than trying to clean it.

The girls have been trained to have me review and install anything they are interested in... and I'm the only who porn, and I practice safe drooling :D

Avast Free works fine for me. An antivirus program should be the LAST line of defense, not the only one. ;)

Layered defenses are what work. Most 0-days already have been checked against all the top AV's..so you won't even see 'em. You can always check a file against multiple engines using virustotal's website: https://www.virustotal.com/

Best thing? Don't get infected in the first place.

I choose to run an extensive HOSTS file to block stuff before the browser even see it, but that may not be for everyone.

Run ad-blocking and scripting protection like AdblockPlus and NoScript in your NON-IE browser and use a hardware router and firewall. I also like Spywareblaster for non-resident protections and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for on-demand scans. (the paid version of MBAM does real-time protection though)

https://www.brightfort.com/spywareblaster.html
https://www.malwarebytes.org/

All that shit is free BTW. ;)

Don't download progs from Cnet or download.com, they all have ad-ware or 'extra programs' payloads they try to sneek in. I like http://www.majorgeeks.com/ they are clean and fast.

MSE is a joke, so are the bloatwares known as Norton/McAffee. If you want a serious but light AV, go for Eset NOD32 or Kaspersky.

i don't have an anit virus program running anymore. waste of system resources. zonealarm free is an excellent firewall and their a/v is bundled in which i scan with so often. other than that your browser itself should be solid.

I used a rules-based firewall and don't like software suites much, I'm a computer control freak. ;-)

Not sure who ZA uses for their AV component, but it's cloud-based so maybe Panda's.

I've had this same Win7 install since:

i hadn't really figured they hadn't written their own. i occasionally scan with ad-aware also. and use ccleaner's start up panel to switch everything off. it has a list of tabs for each startup section now. way better than msconfig. it's amazing what's running.

it's ok to do things this way i think so long as you remember to check your systems yourself. i never setup anyone else's systems this way as i know i'll get a call back in the morning.. dyu what i'm saying. you can tell some ppl 'don't click on that kind of popup' until your blue in the face and they'll still click it!!

Aye, Safe Hex is the best practice. But, that requires you first know about computers and the Internet...lol

People just want toasters. No thinking required.
An AV won't save a clueless user however. AV's can be disabled and admin:admin on the router and password123 is all too common. :-/

Of course, nowadays, your Android phone is just as susceptible to malware as a PC and malware for IOS is ramping up too. Irony...

Well I am late to the show (as usual) but I'll give you my 2 cents which is about what it is worth.
I am NOT geeky at all and computer technology baffles me. I am old, give me a break!

I used AVG free for awhile and thought it was great because I thought it took care of my computer. I was wrong. After my third time taking my desk top to the shop for repair (just so I could use it), I asked him what I could get to take care of my computer so I didn't have to see him again. LOL He sold me Norton's and it has worked for 4 years. I have had a few "invasions" and I usually can't get shit to work when this happens. What has saved my ass is remote access so they can fix my computer from there.

That said I hate having to pay for it every year as well. It kind of reminds me of the mafia making you pay for "protection". I would love to have something free but being challenged as I am I feel I don't have much choice. It's worth payment I guess to know they will "fix" it even if it takes them hours sometimes.

Why you wanna be 'in' that? I don't watch many vape shows anymore. They seem so clique-y. No thanks.
well, i like some vape shows and i read a bit about celtic fury so i thought i'd go along and see. his show host is on here too. and some of the others on their chat. i do think he's good friend's with joe, but fck him. if that's how it is then so be it. it's true about the "in" he mentioned. i'd rather stay out and stay with the n00bs

I've not had any issues with Norton. Ever. I just didn't wanna shell out $70, but when I look at it as less than $6 a month, not so bad. Free is nice for sure.

TBH I almost never browse the web on a home computer now. I pay bills and buy vapers shit, that's about it. I browse for the vape shit first from my phone.

I agree. Mine will be due again next month. I wish there was a way around it.
