Instant Master Gardener #1: The Secret to a Green ThumbThis is part of a course I developed for new gardeners. I'll be posting all 8 modules over the next few weeks.
This was shot when I was living in Oregon. Wasn’t that a beautiful garden? I have many fond memories of that time and place. This short video is the first of an 8 part series that will empower and inspire you. It is only one of the 34 course available at the Grow Network academy. You can get the best deal (lowest cost) on the full Grow Network academy by watching that free webinar and taking the special offer at the end. www.BackyardFoodProduction.com |
Went out in the garden and picked the rest of my radishes
Wonder how they'd be pickled
That sounds wonderful, thank youJimi, instead of pickling, I made radish kimchi. You can see it on today's cooking page (01Jun25).

Instant Master Gardener 2: How Much Land Do You Need To Grow All Your Own Food
This is a short video exploring how much space you need to grow your own food. I explore the work of John Jeavons (a master!) who developed a completely plant based methodology for growing food. I think he developed it this way as in many parts of the world where it is implemented, people cannot afford to buy rabbits or chickens. Part of the reason he has such a large space is that he is growing all the fertility the food plants need. Note that I use and highly recommend John’s bio-intensive method, but in raised beds as you see in the free webinar https://backyardfoodproduction.com LOL, I’ve been doing this a long time! You can see I was a lot younger in this short video. |

Tell my cats that... They love fresh catnip and I can't start it in the house.
I had catnip growin behind the house and the neighborhood cats loved it, I grew it to make tea outta but cats didn't leave it alone.
Ok I didn't use mulch so maybe that's whyOkay, so I had to look this up. It turns out that not all cats are susceptible to the lure of catnip. About 30 percent are not (see article linked below).
BUT, my next question would be whether or not you had your catnip very well mulched. I think it makes a difference. The mulch might get between the catnip and the cat's smeller. I really don't know, but my organic gardening book emphasized mulching the catnip really well, and applying more mulch if it wore down or blew away.

Are you ready to take your irrigation to the next level? Drip tape is flat (pun intended) out the best way to water your garden. 15 years ago my mentor and friend Scott Murray introduced me to this process and it changed my gardens and orchards forever. So what exactly is it? Drip tape irrigation is a low-pressure, highly effective system that delivers water right where we want it through thin, lay flat tubing with pre-spaced emitters. It minimizes water waste by reducing evaporation and runoff, making it ideal for row crops, raised beds and believe it or not orchards (thank's Janis). This system is especially useful for conserving water while promoting healthy root growth. And unlike other drip irrigation systems it evenly distributes water pressure in the entire system. So no more thirsty plants at the end of our drip lines. It is super simple to install, think tinker toys, long lasting system that is super easy to use. That’s a win in my book! Each year we offer a Drip Tape Class live in March and record it, so jump in, watch and send me any questions that you have. Then if you are inspired you can get your Drip Tape Supplies from us. |
MMMM makes my mouth waterI harvested my garlic. This was the first time I had grown it. I was hoping for bigger bulbs, I suspect not enough water. Sure is tasty though.
