ADHD Meds Linked to Heart Damage

Research shows that ADHD stimulant medications such as Ritalin and Adderall appear linked to a heightened risk for cardiomyopathy (weakening of the heart muscle) — and the risk grows with time.

Overall, people ages 20 to 40 who were on a medication for attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) were 17 percent more likely to have cardiomyopathy at one year and 57 percent more likely to have cardiomyopathy at eight years compared to peers who weren’t taking the drugs.

“The longer you leave patients on these medications, the more likely they are to develop cardiomyopathy, but the risk is still very low,” said study lead author Pauline Gerard.

The study was based on data from 80 hospitals across the United States, looking at people ages 20 to 40. Gerard’s team compared rates of cardiomyopathy among patients with ADHD who took stimulant meds and people who were matched by age, sex, and health conditions but did not take the drugs.

The study showed that over a period of 10 years, the relative risk for cardiomyopathy rose among people taking stimulant meds for about eight years, then tapered off during the last two years.

However, in absolute numbers, the incidence of cardiomyopathy was still quite low. At the 10-year mark, just under 1 percent of patients taking ADHD medications was found to have a weakened heart.

The ‘Hateful Eight’ Seed Oils Most Americans Don’t Know – But Should​

Last week I came across an article in Cleveland.com titled,“Processing matters in MAHA’s seed-oil-vs-animal-fat debate.” It was encouraging to see a mainstream outlet finally acknowledging what I’ve been saying for nearly two decades: the way oils are processed determines whether they nourish or poison us.
But even as the piece, written by Paris Wolfe, concedes that “processing matters,” it misses the most important point. The author’s conclusion is that we should simply buy “unrefined” sunflower oil. What she doesn’t seem to realize is that almost no one in America is eating unrefined sunflower oil.
And it’s not just a problem with sunflower oil; more than 90 percent of the foods sold in our country, that contain any oil, are made with eight refined, bleached, and deodorized seed oils. These are the eight oils I’ve called the Hateful Eightsoy, corn, canola, cottonseed, sunflower, safflower, grapeseed, and rice-bran. My research suggests these have done more to damage our metabolic health than any other ingredient in the modern diet.

Arthritis Can Cause Chest Pain

Chest pain that isn’t caused by the heart is actually a much larger category than heart-related chest pain. Osteoarthritis, sometimes called “wear-and-tear” arthritis, is a joint disease that causes the top layer of cartilage covering a bone to break down and wear away.

As in other joints such as the knee, osteoarthritis can occur in rib joints, causing inflammation and chest pain.

Osteoarthritis in the neck can also cause pain that starts there and then spreads to the chest.

Walnuts actually rank high amongst the most antioxidant-rich of all foods on earth.

That means they have very powerful free-radical scavenging powers to help protect against cancer and other diseases.

Furthermore, walnuts are high in polyphenolic compounds and phytochemical substances that can have especially strong inflammation-reducing effects.

As such, a handful a day is exceptional for boosting health and preventing many diseases.

That said, here are 7 of the most research-backed benefits of walnuts:

1) Boost Brain Health and Protect Against Alzheimer's
As noted, routinely consuming walnuts can help cognitive function, including memory and focus, and protect against dementia and Alzheimer's.

2) Help Your Immune System
Walnuts are high in a number of nutrients that can help boost the immune system, such as copper and vitamin B6.

Both of these nutrients are also excellent for supporting the health of your nerves.

3) Improve Heart Health and Healthy Cholesterol Levels
Walnuts are excellent sources of certain omega-3 fatty acids; the amino acid l-arginine; monounsaturated fatty acids such as oleic acid; and essential fatty acids (EFAs) such as linoleic acid, alpha-linolenic acid, and arachidonic acids -- all of which have been shown highly beneficial to preventing heart diseases.

A study published in the medical journal Metabolism showed consuming walnuts may significantly lower the "bad" LDL cholesterol and raise the "good" HDL.

Another study out of the University of Munich Medical Center showed that consuming walnuts can reduce ApoB levels, which is a marker used to evaluate the risk for cardiovascular diseases.

4) Control Your Cravings
Researchers from Harvard Medical School found consuming walnuts may increase levels of feeling full, helping to prevent cravings and thereby helping to manage weight.

5) Improve Metabolism and Cleanse and Balance the Gut
Walnuts are rich sources of minerals such as copper, potassium, manganese, iron, calcim, magnesium, zinc, and selenium that are essential for helping you efficiently and fully digest foods for energy.

They also aid in detoxification by helping remove toxins and waste.

A Louisiana State University study also showed they have prebiotic properties, in particular increasing the good bacteria Lactobacillus, Ruminococcus, and Roseburia, which can improve your gut function.

6) Boost Bone Health
Phosphorous and copper are central to building and maintaining bone health, and walnuts are rich sources of both of these minerals.

Walnuts may also help increase calcium absorption into the bones.

7) Help Keep Your Skin Clear and Young-Looking

And that's a good thing. Potassium is essential for a healthy sex life, and we certainly don't want sexually frustrated fruit flies!

Special: Why Most Male Intimacy Supplements Don't Work

Here's why: The latest research reveals that male FFs die sooner when they're aroused by pheromones from female drosophila (the scientific name for fruit flies) but are unrequited in their ardor. In short, sexual frustration kills. But get the twosome together, and the male lives a longer and — we may be projecting here — happier life.

What does this have to do with YOU?

Genes in fruit flies are similar to humans' and often serve the same function (for example, fruit flies produce insulin-like molecules — lose them and their blood sugar rises, just as in diabetes).
