Wine culture is so old that historians have found evidence of its consumption dating back over 8,000 years! Ancient Jars containing fermented grape (and rice) residue have been unearthed in Greece, Egypt, Israel, Iran, and eastward all the way to China.

This versatile drink was (and still is) used for ceremonies, celebrations, and other religious rites – most likely because its complex flavors and symbology set it apart from other beverages, especially fermented ones.

This recipe, also known as glühwein or glögg, is an ancient European drink jammed with medicinal herbs that put the healing effects of wine over the top (while also cooking out some of the alcohol).

The citrus is a digestive bitter, while the cardamom helps reduce inflammation. The cinnamon acts as an aphrodisiac and relaxant, the cloves are a natural painkiller that fight off bacterial and viral infections, and star anise has been found to be just as effective against certain bacteria as antibiotics. This recipe is easy to tweak to your preferences.

Ingredients

  • 1 bottle full-bodied red wine (merlot, malbec, or cabernet sauvignon)
  • 1 orange, sliced into rounds
  • 1 lemon, sliced into rounds
  • 1 small handful cinnamon sticks
  • 4 to 6 whole cloves
  • 1 to 2 star anise
  • 2 to 3 cardamom pods
  • Optional sweetener: maple syrup or honey, to taste
  • Optional liqueur: brandy or spiced rum, to taste
  • Orange peel, for garnish
  • Extra cinnamon sticks, for garnish
Preparation

  1. Add all the ingredients to a large pot on the stove.
  2. Warm on the lowest setting for at least 1 hour.
  3. Strain out the spices and fruit. Add the optional ingredients, if using.
  4. Serve warm and garnished with an orange peel and a cinnamon stick.
NOTE: If you want to try this recipe without the alcohol, use half grape juice, half cranberry juice (low sugar is best) as a substitute.

Increase Your Vitamin D Intake

About 35 percent of American adults are deficient of vitamin D. The recommended daily intake for vitamin D is around 800 international units (IU) or 20 micrograms. Here are some ways to help you increase your vitamin D intake year-round through dietary changes:

Eat more fish. Salmon and tuna, even canned tuna, are rich in vitamin D, says Kristi Ruth, a registered dietitian. Beef liver, sardines, and herring are other good sources.

Eat whole eggs. Egg yolks are rich in vitamin D, so it is best to eat the whole egg instead of just the whites.

Include mushrooms. According to a study published in the journal Nutrients, putting mushrooms out in sunlight for 15 minutes to two hours can increase their vitamin D content by exposing them to ultraviolet light.

Opt for fortified cereals and orange juice. General Mills doubled the vitamin D content in many of its popular Big G cereals, including Cheerios and Cinnamon Toast Crunch. To get the most vitamin D from orange juice, pair it with a fat source, says Ruth.

Vitamin Deficiency Triggers Migraines

Almost 40 million people in the U.S. have been diagnosed and treated for migraine. That adds up to more than 160 million workdays lost every year — not to mention the severe pain and misery the headaches cause.

Migraine triggers vary from person to person. Stress, hormone shifts, irregular eating patterns, sleep disturbances, alcohol, smoking, and even pickled foods may set one off.

But a new study has identified a universal trigger that may come as a surprise: vitamin D deficiency.

It seems that a deficiency of vitamin D may allow increased inflammation, especially neurovascular inflammation in the brain that affects the way the endothelial cells lining blood vessels regulate blood flow.

And that’s not confined to any demographic. Vitamin D deficiency is related to migraine for all ages, genders, races, and incomes.

If you're a migraine sufferer, get a blood test to check your vitamin D level. If it’s low, take 1,000 IU of D3 daily, or more if recommended.

And focus on foods that contain vitamin D, such as mushrooms, salmon, sardines, and fortified tofu and cereals (with no added sugar).

Exposure to sunlight is also important.

In most of the U.S., spending 5-30 minutes in the midday sun — without sunscreen — between February and November three or more times per week is enough to maintain healthy levels among light-skinned people. For darker skin, it takes more time; one study recommends dark-skinned men opt for 90 minutes of sun exposure three times a week.

Making my to-die-for Ginger Cookies, Almond Chocolate Freezer Fudge, and of course, Healthy Sugar Cookies for Santa!

As always, there are candy, cookies, and sweet treats everywhere you look this time of year...

And you might call me a Grinch for saying this, but I do something very unconventional to protect my health:

I avoid refined sugar whenever possible (yes, even during the holidays).

That doesn’t mean I skip dessert or suck the joy out of Christmas. It just means I’m more intentional about the treats I choose and how I bake.

Here's the truth about refined sugar...

  • White sugar, brown sugar, and powdered sugar are all ultra-processed forms of refined sugar.
  • They’re boiled, filtered, bleached, and stripped down until nothing is left but a cheap, dead sweetener with no nutritional value. Every natural mineral and plant compound is taken out. What you’re left with is pure stimulation for your taste buds and nothing your body can actually use.
  • Brown sugar begins as white sugar. It simply has molasses added back in to make it “brown” again.
  • Corn syrup is also ultra-processed. It’s made by breaking GMO corn starch down with enzymes and chemicals, then heavily refined and filtered into a clear, concentrated sweetener where all natural nutrients and minerals have been stripped out.
  • Unless a sugar says it is “cane sugar” on an ingredient label it's probably made from GMO sugar beets. Any sugar (including Cane Sugar) that is NOT organic could have been sprayed with Roundup, Atrazine, and other harmful pesticides.
When you eat refined sugar, it hits your system fast. Your blood sugar spikes, insulin jumps, and your body starts working overtime to bring things back into balance.

That whole process creates extra acidity in the body. And since refined sugar doesn’t have any minerals to buffer it, your body has to use its own mineral stores.

This diminishes your immune system, makes you more tired, anxious, and wreaks havoc on your skin.

You truly can minimize or avoid so many health issues simply by replacing refined sugar with healthier (unrefined) options!

You see, I don't believe that treats need to be unhealthy. There's a way to make fun and festive treats that don't demolish your health and taste incredibly delicious.

I've also found after years of avoiding refined sugar, I prefer desserts made without it. My palate has adjusted and my body knows what is best for it (I can literally feel the difference if I eat something with refined sugar - and it makes me feel awful).

Here are several ways I replace refined sugar in my baking, and they even pack in nutrition:

Organic Coconut Palm Sugar – It’s an easy 1-to-1 substitute for baking recipes that call for regular sugar and brown sugar, and works great in most cookie recipes. It’s completely unrefined, helping to preserve all of its vitamins and minerals, and it has a lower glycemic index than refined sugar.

Organic Maple Syrup – This can replace things like corn syrup, white sugar, or even powdered sugar in glazes and baking. Because it's a liquid, you usually use a little less than you would refined sugar and slightly reduce other liquids in the recipe so the texture stays right. It’s not refined or bleached, and it still contains natural minerals from the tree.

Organic Date Sugar – Date sugar doesn’t dissolve so it’s great for sprinkling on top of baked goods in place of powdered sugar (though not as sweet). It’s produced by grinding dried dates into a powder, so it’s unrefined and still contains fiber and naturally occurring nutrients.

Food Babe’s Sweet Blend – I make a delicious blend with organic raw pitted dates, prunes, bananas and sometimes applesauce or maple syrup together in the blender along with some fat – either organic coconut oil or melted organic butter. It makes the most deliciously sweet cookies or cakes! No processing and all nutrition.

It’s all just about making better choices, and this same philosophy applies any time of the year.
