In the latest poll from the Pew Research Center, which surveyed more than 10,000 U.S. adults in September, about half of respondents (51%) said they would definitely or probably get a COVID-19 vaccine if it were available today. The respondents who would definitely get a coronavirus vaccine now stands at 21%, half of what it was in the spring. THE PRICE OF LOVE​

I had a plan ready to go for this love note, but cancer has taught me that life has its own plan. My heart is heavy, but my gut is telling me to write from it despite the weight.

Cancer sucks, but it did bring me a few gifts. One of those was the opportunity to meet so many wonderful, amazing, inspiring people through support groups and organizations. Cancer is a club that no one wants to be in, but if you have to be, it's a pretty fantastic group of people to belong to in my experience. The problem with that though is that you unfortunately have to be prepared to lose at least some of these amazing new friends.

We know that we are going to experience loss in life, it simply comes with the territory. But, we are also really good at living day-to-day without thinking about that fact. So, when it comes knocking, it always seems to take us by surprise. It is easy to try and push those feelings away because they SUCK. It sucks to lose someone, or to know you are going to soon, and we would rather not think about it. We try to diminish the feelings, to convince ourselves that it's not that bad, we didn't know them that well, or that it's going to be just fine and to get on with our day. But that does a disservice to ourselves and to that person.

In my experience, those feelings are still there even if we push them away, and they just wait there, affecting us in ways we don't notice and getting ready to burst to the surface at the worst of times. And that person, whoever they are or were to us, deserve so much more than for us to shove down our feelings about them. They should be celebrated, and a part of that is showing our grief, sharing it, healing it. My therapist told me once that grief is the price we pay for getting to experience love. Our grief is evidence that this person lived and loved, that their life had value and purpose, and that they will be remembered and will live on in our hearts. They deserve for that impact to be made known.

Honour and celebrate their life in the way that feels right to you. It may be to do everything you can for them in their final days. It may be to speak or post about them. It may be something quieter, like sharing comforting words with them privately or, if they are already gone, something on your own like lighting a candle for them at home and thinking about your favourite memories of your time with them. This will also help you to work through your emotions and start the healing. However that takes shape for you and for them doesn't matter; what does matter is doing it. Send them love, send their family love, send yourself love. Laugh, cry, feel and, above all, remember and honour them always. Let yourself feel the pain; it will get easier with time, and it is the most courageous way to honour their memory, by showing that losing them was worth it to have known them.

Mental Health Monday​

Breathing. It's so simple, it's something we do all the time without even thinking about it, but what happens if we bring a little bit of consciousness to that breath for a few minutes? Deep breathing has so many wonderful benefits, from mental and emotional to immune boosting to physical health and healing. In today's MHM vlog, I'm discussing some of these benefits that are most applicable for cancer, and I'm reviewing a few of my favourite breathing techniques and showing you how to combine them into a completely new breathing practice that can lower stress, bring you into the present moment, prepare you for a meditation, be a meditation in and of itself, quiet that monkey mind at the end of the day that just won't stop, and much more.

Diet and Nutrition: Recipes​

Although I have my trusty go-to recipes that I love, I'm always on the lookout for new favourites. I'm lucky that Jesse loves to cook too, and he often comes up with new things that he wants to try. Usually that gives me the idea to try and make an equivalent that fits into my diet! A few weeks ago, Jesse wanted to make dim sum, and so I tried a paleo version of his recipe. And you know what? They were amazing! A little chewier than traditional dumplings, but honestly, they were pretty true to the original. They are grain free, dairy free, and obviously sugar free. And the fun part is that they are totally customizable! You can fill them with whatever you want and use whatever flavours you want. You could even make a dessert version filled with fruit!

Did you ever wonder if you were operating with a totally different definition of a word than everyone else?

For example, my understanding of the word “safe” is...​

  • You should be able to expect that something “safe” has a proven track record of causing no harm… the longer, the better.

  • You should be able to assume that a “safe” cure is not worse than the disease.

  • A “safe” shot should not require paramedics in the drive-through clinic just in case you’re one of the people who experience a life-threatening reaction.

So is this shot “safe?”

During clinical trials, 80% of participants reported systemic side effects to the shot…​

Be stronger than your negative emotions. Negative emotions can cloud your judgment and make you feel the world is closing in on you. Don’t let these emotions change who you are and what you do. When you act on your negative emotions too quickly, you end up doing things out of character or making decisions that you'll later regret. Practice self-control. Don't give in to panic. Slow down and think through the situation before doing anything.

Growing up means molting. Progress, reevaluation, updating priorities, changing opinions, axing old habits and building new ones – that should feel as natural to all of us as a leopard gecko feels shedding their skin monthly.

But we’re humans. And we’ve got lots of feelings about ourselves that are intricately connected in ways we don’t fully understand. Growth can feel uncomfortable for a lot of reasons, and we’re not always in tune with why.

Sometimes, we’re releasing an attachment that was vital and meaningful to our former selves, but no longer serves.

Sometimes, we’re coming to terms with selves that weren’t right to begin with, and correcting course accordingly.

Sometimes, we encounter new information that inspires us to change.

But at the root of the discomfort is a truth that’s hard to admit: It’s hard to escape feeling like by evolving, we’re invalidating who we once were, disrespecting our own legacy, and abandoning dreams we were once proud to have.

Self-Trust and Transformation

We change. Our lives change. Our circumstances change.

Every change requires adjustment. Radical change requires an overhaul.

But as humans, we’re awfully attached to the concept of ourselves – “that’s just who I am” being a frequent tautological response to explain our feelings and behavior.

But “who I am” isn’t real. “Who I am” goes through a permanent and lifelong editing process. “Who I am” doesn’t describe a mineral or a metal, it describes a personality that is fundamentally an amalgamation of everyone you’ve ever met, every movie you’ve ever loved, every book that impacted you, every lesson your parents taught you, every experience that tested you, and even the food you eat most often.

“Who I am” is a fake idea.

Fatigue, Tiredness, and Lethargy:
The Link to Gut Infections​

Tiredness and fatigue can be symptoms of many different root issues, ranging from a lack of sleep or over-exercising, to medical and surgical causes. The lack of energy (lethargy) associated with tiredness can sometimes cause difficulty with normal daily activities, leading to attentiveness and concentration problems.
In this episode, I will go over how to support protein breakdown by extra amino acids and enzymes to help with energy. Dr. Evan will also discuss how to do testing with a doctor to find the root cause. High Blood Pressure Threatens Your Brain

Hyperactive. Hyperglycemia. Hyperventilation. You know that “hyper” is a sign that a condition can cause distress or chronic illness. Well, add high blood pressure — hypertension — to that list, and not just for the damage they can do to your cardiovascular system.

It turns out that even if you only have elevated blood pressure for a short while and are middle-age, it damages your brain and reduces your cognitive powers.

A new study out of Brazil followed more than 7,000 participants for up to six years and found that having prehypertension — no matter how long it lasts — damages what's called fluency, which indicates cognitive decline.

The study also found full-blown high blood pressure for any length of time before age 55 diminishes your ability to remember things.

These findings, published in the journal Hypertension, make it clear that it's vital to maintain a healthy blood pressure throughout your life.

Unfortunately, almost 108 million Americans have high blood pressure (130/80 mmHg or higher), but only 27 million have their hypertension under control. That means at least 81 million folks are risking their ability to think and remember.

What can you do to prevent hypertension, or help get it under control?

• Be aware of the risk factors: excess weight, inactivity, chronic insomnia, alcohol dependence, a genetic predisposition, smoking, and diabetes.

• Aim to get 300 minutes of exercise and two strength-building workouts of 20 to 30 minutes a week.

• Enjoy a plant-based diet that eliminates ultraprocessed foods and red and processed meats.

• Lose at least 5 to 10 pounds if you're overweight or obese.

• Cultivate great sleep habits — seven to eight hours nightly in a dark, cool, quiet room.

• Have your pressure checked regularly on both arms. A new study published in Hypertension says that if there's more than 10 mg separating the systolic readings on your arms you are at risk for cardiovascular problems.

The SAD (Standard American Diet) is over 60 percent ultra-processed food mostly from commodity crops—wheat, corn, and soy turned into hundreds of thousands of food-like products that bear little resemblance to our evolutionary diet. Those who eat the most of these addictive foods are the fattest and sickest among us. This nutrient-depleted diet not only makes us obese and sick but drives us to consume more and more “food-like substances,” looking for the missing nutrients.

Only 11 percent of our diet is nuts, seeds, fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and beans. Only 3 percent of our cropland is used to grow fruits, vegetables, and nuts. Destructive agricultural techniques have destroyed our soil—where plants get their nutrients. Your broccoli today has 50 percent less nutrients than it did 50 years ago.

Today our vegetables have been bred for yield, starch content, disease resistance, drought, shape, shelf stability, and hardiness for transport; not for flavor, nutrient density, or phytochemical richness. Ever taste a store-bought cardboard-like, perfect-looking tomato in the middle of winter, then try an organic, heirloom tomato picked from the vine in late August? You will know exactly what I mean.

There are about 6,000 cultivated edible plant species, yet nearly all crop production comes from just nine species (sugar cane, maize, rice, wheat, potatoes, soybeans, oil-palm fruit, sugar beet, and cassava). Most of those foods are the raw materials for the food industry to produce highly-processed, disease-promoting foods and are not eaten in their original form.

Food, it turns out, is the biggest driver of imbalances in your biological networks, and the biggest lever for rapid change, reversal of disease, and creation of health. While most doctors have not seen the power of food (mostly because they were not trained in how to use food as medicine), I have seen miracles over decades. And so have thousands of my Functional Medicine colleagues. Except they are not miracles.

They are the result of applying the latest advances in understanding how our bodies actually work, not how we were trained in medical school. Autoimmune diseases disappear, depression vanishes, migraines evaporate, psoriasis and eczema clear up, Alzheimer’s patients improve their memory, type 2 diabetes is gone in a few weeks. These are not anomalies or spontaneous remissions, but reproducible results based on applying food as medicine with the model of Functional Medicine.

How does food work to change disease and to create health?

There is no other activity you do every day that has more power to change our biology than what you eat. You literally ingest pounds of foreign material into your body daily. If all calories were the same, it would not matter what you eat. But they are not. Food carries information molecules, instructions, code that programs your biology with every bite for better or worse. Industrial food drives inflammation, oxidative stress, imbalances in hormone and brain chemistry, overloads your detoxification system, depletes your energy, damages your microbiome, and changes your gene expression to turn on disease-causing genes.

Real whole nutrient and phytonutrient-rich food does the opposite—turns off inflammation, increases antioxidant systems, balances hormones and brain chemistry, boosts detoxification, increases energy, optimizes your microbiome, and turns on disease-preventing, health-promoting genes.
