Cleansing Kale Salad Recipe

Ingredients


For the dressing:

  • 1/2 cup of lemon juice
  • 1/2 cup of olive oil
  • 1 clove of garlic (minced)
  • 1 teaspoon of fresh ginger (minced)
  • 1 teaspoon of rosemary
  • 1 teaspoon of raw honey
  • A pinch of cayenne
  • 1 tablespoon of salt
For the salad:

  • 2 cups kale (chopped)
  • 2 cups red cabbage (shredded)
  • 2 cups broccoli (chopped)
  • 2 carrots (shredded)
  • 1 bell pepper (diced)
  • 2 avocados (diced)
  • 1/2 cup fresh parsley (chopped)
  • 1 cup walnuts
  • 1 tablespoon sesame seeds
Preparation

1) Add all dressing ingredients to a medium sized blender and process until the contents are fully integrated.

2) Slice up all the veggies and herbs, per the instructions above.

3) Put everything into a salad bowl and toss it together.

4) Enjoy!

Excess Carbohydrates, Triglycerides, and Heart Disease​

There’s a growing body of research that indicates how excess carbohydrate intake, especially simple carbohydrates, increases weight gain, triglyceride levels (unhealthy blood fats), inflammation, arteriosclerosis, risk of cancer, type 2 diabetes, and heart disease.
Triglycerides are fats from the food we eat that are carried in the blood. Most of the fats we eat, including butter, margarines, and oils, are in triglyceride form. Excess calories, alcohol or sugar in the body turn into triglycerides and are stored in fat cells throughout the body.
Triglycerides and cholesterol are both fatty substances known as lipids. But, triglycerides are fats; cholesterol is not. Cholesterol is a waxy, odorless substance made by the liver that is an essential part of cell walls and nerves.
Cholesterol also plays an important role in body functions such as digestion and hormone production. In addition to being produced by the body, cholesterol comes from animal foods that we eat.
Triglycerides are blood fats made in the liver from excess energy, especially excess fructose (as in white sugar and high fructose corn syrup).
  • Normal: Less than 150 mg/dL
  • Borderline: 150 to 199 mg/dL
  • High: 200 to 499 mg/dL
  • Very High: 500 mg/dL or above
Triglyceride levels over 150 begin to increase your risk of a heart attack. Elevated triglycerides are a measure of “blood stickiness.” This increased risk of blood clots increases your risk of heat attack and stroke.
At a level of 175, most people have clot-prone blood and are at greater risk of a heart attack or sudden death. I recommend you keep your levels below 140. Last time I checked mine were 90 and my wife’s were 86.
Everyone talks about the dangers of high cholesterol. You should be more concerned with elevated triglycerides. Elevated cholesterol is often meaningless.

Calories, especially carbohydrates, ingested in a meal and not immediately used as fuel by the body are then converted to triglycerides and transported to fat cells to be stored for later use (stored as fat).
Triglycerides, elevated blood fats are not derived from the fats we eat, but from excess carbohydrate, starches or sugar intake!
You don’t get fat from eating fat, you get fat from eating excess carbohydrates, especially simple, high glycemic carbohydrates.
When you eat excess carbohydrates, they are stored as fat. Those love handles aren’t due to eating fat, they’re due to eating more carbohydrates than your body needs.
The real culprit in increased triglyceride levels is the excess consumption of simple sugars.
Simple carbohydrates (sugars) have one or two connected sugar molecules. Simple carbohydrates include fructose (found in fruits, fruit juice), galactose (in dairy products), maltose (starches/grains), levulose (table/cane sugar), and glucose (grape and corn syrup).
Disaccharides are simple carbohydrates with two interconnected sugar molecules. Sucrose (table, cane, or beet sugar) and lactose (milk) are examples of disaccharides. By the way, cow’s milk is mostly sugar. Please don’t worry about the fat in milk.
Complex carbohydrates, known as oligosaccharides and polysaccharides, are made up of longer, more complex chains of sugar molecules. It takes the body longer to digest complex carbs than to process simple carbs.
Certain complex carbs are better choices than others. The healthiest complex carbohydrates are those that have not been processed or refined:
*Whole grains such as brown rice, wild rice, oatmeal, whole-grain (rather than pearled) barley, bulgur (which is made from cracked wheat), and faro
*Grain-like foods such as quinoa (a seed) and buckwheat
*Non-starchy vegetables—asparagus, broccoli, cauliflower, zucchini, onions, green beans, etc.
*Beans and legumes like lentils, kidney beans, and chickpeas

The Hormone Insulin​

When we eat a meal that contains large amounts of carbohydrates, especially simple carbohydrates, our glucose or blood sugar levels begin to rise. The body must counter this rapid rise in blood glucose by releasing the hormone insulin. Insulin then shunts excess carbohydrates into the cells where it is stored as fat.

The role of insulin traces its roots back to a time when man’s very survival depended on bodily reserves of fat. This fat was used as fuel when wild game was in short supply.

Centuries ago, before man was agriculturally inclined, our diet consisted of wild animals, berries, nuts, and fruits. Often, man himself was being hunted. These were not consumer-friendly times. Early man couldn’t walk into the local grocery store and purchase that night’s dinner as we can today. These hunters and gatherers would go days, sometimes weeks, without eating. During these lean times, glucose would be stored in fat tissue to serve as bodily fuel.

Insulin Resistance

Insulin’s primary function is to regulate blood sugar levels. It does this by stimulating the liver to release glycogen and make room for incoming sugar.
Excess blood sugar is transported out of the bloodstream and into the cells where it is stored as fat. The relationship between glucose, glucagon, and insulin is a self-regulating system that serves us well until our metabolism starts to slow down.
Years of eating excess carbohydrates, especially simple carbohydrates, and the effects of metabolic aging begin to take their toll in our mid-thirties and forties. By this time in our lives, we’ve used up our storage space in the cells of our bodies. As I previously mentioned, insulin takes excess sugar and dumps it into the cells for storage.
However, once full, these cells won’t allow, any more sugar to enter in. The body attempts to remedy the sugar storage problem by reducing the cells insulin receptors. Unfortunately, this sends a message to the pancreas to release even more insulin. This results in hyperinsulinemia or excess insulin.

Hyperinsulinism​

In this condition, there is more insulin produced than required by the amount of glucose present in the bloodstream. One theory is that the high concentration of refined carbohydrates enters the blood stream so rapidly that the healthy pancreas over-reacts thinking the body is going to become diabetic.

For example, you eat a candy bar. The sugar in the candy bar enters the small intestine and is rapidly broken down. Sugar is dumped into the bloodstream and insulin is secreted. The pancreas, in response to a large wave of sugar being released so fast, over-secretes insulin. The excess amount of insulin consequently lowers the blood sugar within a short period of time to a hypoglycemic (low blood sugar) state. The individual then desires more sugar and the cycle is repeated.

Increased insulin levels, decreased insulin cell receptors, and cells stuffed full of stored fat prevent sugar from reaching its intended destination, the cells. Instead, the sugar remains in the bloodstream where it can causes damage to the arterial walls leading to high blood pressure, arteriosclerosis, high blood lipid levels, heart disease, and diabetes.

There are a number of risks involved in having hyperinsulinemia which include:

  • Higher triglyceride levels
  • High uric acid
  • Hardening of the arteries (artherosclerosis)
  • Weight gain
  • Hypertension
  • Type 2 diabetes

Symptoms may include:

  • Weight gain
  • Cravings for sugar
  • Intense hunger
  • Feeling frequently hungry
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Feeling anxious or panicky
  • Lacking focus or motivation
  • Fatigue
To reduce your chances of getting hyperinsulinemia, reduce your intake of simple carbohydrate (table sugar, high fructose corn syrup, sweets, processed foods, etc.) foods. Replace the simple sugars with complex carbohydrates-whole grains and vegetables.

Remember, honey is a simple sugar; so is maple syrup, corn syrup, sucrose, and fructose (fruit juice).

Use a plant-based sweeteners like stevia or xylitol.

We lost one of our tribe yesterday. Naomi was a member of my original in-person support group, and an absolutely beautiful human. She was kind, quiet, funny, joyful, positive, caring, an incredible mom and wife, a wonderful friend. I will remember her with a big smile on her face, laughing quietly as she listens to someone share or shares a story of her own. When we can get together with friends again, we will notice a hole in our circle.
Naomi, you will be missed. Your life mattered. You were such a support for all of us. We hope you are at peace, that you are pain-free, that you are surrounded by your loved ones that went before you. We send wishes for comfort and strength to your family. You will be remembered always.
It is so painful when someone passes, and for us it can bring up a lot of difficult emotions. There is the grief and sadness of course, but for those who have had cancer too it can trigger a lot of fear and anxiety. What went wrong? Why them? Why now? Why not me? Remember that every path is different, every cancer is different, every person is different. We can't know the future, so the best we can do is try to live as much in this moment as possible, to squeeze everything we can out of the present, and to cherish and feel gratitude for the life and the health and the time we have right now.
Sending everyone love and hugs, and I'm taking this moment to say that I appreciate each and every one of you. The fact that we don't have to be alone on this journey is everything.

Exercises to Control Bladder Leaks

Kate Winslet has been open about her struggle with urinary incontinence: "When you've had a few children, you know, it's just what happens. It's amazing, two sneezes I'm fine, three, it's game over."

A lot of people — including men — struggle with bladder leaks. And according to a study in the Journal of Urology, the problem is increasing, possibly because more are contending with obesity and diabetes.

In 2002, around 49% of women and 11% of men reported dealing with urinary incontinence (UI) at some point in their life. By 2008, more than 53% of women were affected, as well as 15% of men.

Special: Is This the Trigger of All Chronic Disease?

A new study in the Journal of Women's Health sets out the way incontinence affects pregnant and postpartum women: 20% have persistent UI — about half at month three of pregnancy and about half six months after giving birth. And after age 60, approximately 23% of women deal with incontinence.

Prostate health and treatments are often a trigger for men's bladder problems.

Unfortunately, doctors don't give men and women instructions for how to do Kegels, which are powerfully effective exercises that can counter UI. Here are the basics:

  • Find the muscles you use to stop urinating. Squeeze them — and just them — for three seconds; relax for three seconds. Your goal over time is to be able to squeeze for 10 seconds.
  • Repeat 10 to 15 times per session, three times a day, every day.
  • Don't do Kegels while you urinate, that can hurt your bladder.

Tip: Can you balance on one leg for at least 20 seconds? According to research published in the American Heart Association’s journal Stroke, the ability to balance on one leg is an important test for brain health. The study found that struggling to balance on one leg for 20 seconds or longer was linked to an increased risk for small blood vessel damage in the brain and reduced cognitive function in otherwise healthy people. Test yourself to see how long you can balance on one leg and practice regularly. Balance is a fundamental skill-related component of physical fitness that plays an important and critical role in preventing injury and falling, as well as improving posture, functional capacity, quality of life and feelings of well-being. (Psst…I’m standing on one leg as I write this.)


Impact: Mend fences. Apologize for past mistakes. Get rid of that guilty conscience. Let go. Forgive others and yourself for errors of your ways.
