Bacterial Infections Linked to Strokes, Heart Disease

A Finnish research group has been studying a possible association between bacterial infections and cardiovascular disease for more than 10 years.

Their study, published in the Journal of the American Heart Association, looked for signs during a four-year period of bacteria in blood clots removed from 75 patients who were treated for an ischemic stroke.

Special: The Shocking Truth About Magnesium

Ischemic stroke is caused by a blockage in a blood vessel in the brain, and accounts for about 87% of all strokes.

The study found that 84% of the participants had bacterial DNA in their blood clot. Among them, 59 had a strain of streptococci commonly found in the mouth that can cause infections if they get into the bloodstream.

The work is "the first to show common presence of [this] bacterial DNA in ischemic stroke patients," said Olli Patrakka, the study's lead author.

The bacteria, called viridans streptococci, are believed to cause endocarditis, an infection of the lining, valves, or muscles of the heart.

The same strain of streptococci has been found in blood clots removed from patients who had a heart attack. Additional studies found the same bacteria in patients who had a ruptured brain aneurysm or a blood clot in their leg.

The most common cause of acid-related discomfort is when stomach acid flows back into the esophagus or throat.* Our bodies have a valve called the esophageal sphincter, which normally keeps this acidic content in the stomach, but as this valve becomes weak, stomach acid and other stomach contents can make their way back into the throat, causing irritation and discomfort.
When this happens, you’ll likely feel one or more of the following:*
  • Heartburn (burning sensation in your chest)
  • Chest pain

  • Food regurgitation

Most people experience symptoms after eating and for some people, the worst symptoms occur when lying down to sleep.

With constant use over the years, this valve can lose its ability to stay tightly closed, and this is why acid problems are more prevalent in people over the age of 40.*
Other lifestyle causes of acid issues include:* * *
  • Smoking
  • Eating large meals
  • Eating spicy or fatty foods
  • Eating too quickly
  • Coffee
  • Alcohol
  • Certain medications
  • Pregnancy
Stress is another common cause of acid problems.* This is due to the body’s natural response to release certain hormones during times of stress that cause the stomach to make more acid than is needed.
An imbalance of healthy bacteria in the stomach is another cause for excess acid production. If there is an overabundance of a certain bacteria or an invasion of infectious bacteria, like Helicobacter pylori (H. Pylori), this can contribute to acid symptoms and discomfort as well.*
Also, those who are obese are more prone to suffering from acid-related discomfort. Carrying extra weight can cause many issues when it comes to the digestive system and leads to heartburn, especially when the weight is carried mostly in the abdominal area.
The main reason obesity contributes to acid symptoms is because obesity leads to dysfunction of the esophagus and the esophageal sphincter.*
Studies have found that participants who had a body mass index (BMI) greater than 35 had a weakening of the esophageal sphincter and a decrease in the overall pressure of the esophagus. Both issues decrease how well your food moves through your digestive tract causing acid-related symptoms.*

How Your Diet Can Help (and Hurt)
Your Acid Issues​

Since acid issues originate in your digestive tract, it should be no surprise that your diet can play a major role in reducing your symptoms or making them worse. By adjusting your diet, you can reduce your discomfort and sleep disruptions.
Foods to Avoid if You Have Acid Problems
There are several foods and food groups known to make acid issues worse. These foods cause your esophageal sphincter to relax which leads to stomach contents accidentally coming back into the throat rather than staying in your stomach.
Spicy foods and fatty foods tend to be the ones that cause the most symptoms. Examples of these foods include:*
Fried Food
Bloating
Processed snacks like potato chips
Bacon, sausage, and other fatty processed meats
Certain cheeses
Fatty milk products made with whole milk or cream
In addition to greasy, fatty foods, there are certain fruits and vegetables that have naturally high acid levels. Tomatoes are a common culprit for heartburn and this includes eating tomatoes raw, eating red sauces like marinara or pizza sauce, tomato soup, and even ketchup.*
Citrus fruits like grapefruit and oranges are high in acid too so it’s best to avoid or limit citrus if you’re suffering from acid problems.*
Chocolate and peppermint can also make acid issues worse.*
Don’t forget beverages – they also have to go through the digestive tract. In addition to alcohol, caffeine and carbonation are major causes for acid discomfort.
Caffeinated drinks like coffee, tea and sodas all make acid issues worse. And while the bubbles from carbonated drinks may soothe an upset stomach, all of that fizz expands in your stomach and can cause heartburn symptoms.*

Foods to Add to Your Diet to Reduce Acid symptoms

Fortunately, there are many food groups that help soothe heartburn.

Foods high in fiber help reduce overeating (a common cause of acid problems). So, fill your pantry with whole grains including oats, brown rice, and whole grain breads. Root vegetables like carrots, beets, and sweet potatoes are also fiber-rich.*

Green vegetables like kale, green beans, and asparagus will help increase your fiber too.* Fennel is another veggie that is low in acid and can soothe heartburn.*

While you want to avoid or reduce citrus fruits, choosing other fruits like apples, bananas, grapes, and pears are typically fine, unless your acid issues are severe.*

Melon fruits are also a safer bet when it comes to acid. Watermelon, cantaloupe, and honeydew are low in acid and high in water content – meaning it helps dilute the stomach acid and can help reduce heartburn symptoms.

Ginger has been used for centuries to help soothe acid-related stomach issues as it can help ease inflammation and keep your stomach contents moving down the digestive tract (rather than sitting in your stomach for too long).* You can make decaffeinated tea with ginger or make smoothies with freshly grated ginger root.

Like most things when it comes to diet, not everyone will have the same reactions to the same foods. It’s important to identify what triggers your acid-related symptoms and avoid these foods. You can do this by keeping a food diary for a few weeks and tracking your symptoms. If you notice you have symptoms when you eat certain foods then those are the foods that are more likely triggers for your acid-related symptoms.

Avoiding or reducing your intake of your specific triggers can have a big impact on reducing your acid-related symptoms.

The Acid/Stress Connection​

Have you ever noticed yourself grabbing a few extra Tums or an antacid during stressful times? Maybe you’re planning a huge event like a wedding or preparing for a large presentation – and suddenly you have crazy heartburn out of seemingly nowhere?
You’re not alone. Heartburn and stress go hand in hand. Several studies have shown the relationship between stress and an increase in acid-related symptoms.* It’s often difficult to know which happened first, the stress or acid discomfort, but it’s clear that each can make the other worse.
Stress can increase acid symptoms in a few ways. The important esophageal sphincter (the valve that keeps your stomach contents in your stomach) may not function properly during extreme stress. It can either become leaky, or it becomes too tight and prevents your food and other stomach contents from moving along to facilitate normal digestion.*
Dealing with stress may even increase how much acid your stomach secretes, causing an increase in symptoms.*
Several studies have also concluded that people who are under a lot of stress become more sensitive to acid symptoms. This means that even if two people have the same amount of stomach acid secretion and function of their esophageal sphincter, small changes will affect someone under stress more severely.*
This all highlights the importance of managing stress to help alleviate and even prevent acid related symptoms. But this can become its own issue, especially when people become anxious or stressed out in anticipation of heartburn – especially at night. This stress can interfere with sleep quality nearly as much as the acid itself, creating a vicious cycle around stress and heartburn.

Along with decreased swallowing, you don’t make as much saliva while you’re sleeping. This is a good thing, otherwise you’d wake up with a mouth full of saliva – but saliva helps neutralize stomach acid so acid-related symptoms can increase during nighttime hours.*
