Feed your microbiome with plants

Dear Jim,
You are receiving this message because you attended the Happy, Healthy Gut Summit or we met somewhere else. I have hardly written in the past two years, it has been a bumpy time for me personally. I am BACK and ready to serve. This week we are doing the Microbiome Mission, where we focus on a different plant constituent every day to feed our most important digestive bacteria. Over the years we have talked so much about the nutrients in different plant foods and how they interact with our biochemistry. Let's take some time to talk about HOW we benefit through these foods through our unique microbiomes.
The Microbiome Mission is a five-day event where each day I will host one workshop about a particular plant constituent. If you register to attend you can join us live on Facebook or zoom for the workshop and if you cannot attend live you can access the recordings. Each day you will also receive a video greeting from me outlining our topic.

On Day 1, Tuesday, we will talk about Polyphenols, the colourful chemicals in fruits and veg also known as antioxidants. There are thousands of different types but we will start with anthocyanidins, flavonoids and carotenoids.
On Day 2, Wednesday, we will focus on resistant starches, where to actually get them, the amount that has been shown to benefit digestion and blood sugar regulation. There are some big mistakes happening here and I can't wait to work with you to set things straight!
On Day 3, Thursday, we talk about probiotics, which ones to use when and some specific strains to benefit blood sugar balance, immune regulation and more.

On Day 4, Friday, we talk about wild bacteria that you can't get from pills, powders, supplements or anything in a store. We will discuss some well-known wild ferments like kimchi, water kefir, non-dairy kefir, kombucha and sauerkraut and the bacteria contained therein. The majority of our microbiomes are composed of bacteria that are not yet sold for profit. Let's get into it!
On Day 5, Saturday, we look at different categories of herbal medicines that benefit the digestive system, how each interacts with our gut flora and when each might be appropriate to use. Many types of herbs that sooth the gut feed SIBO bacteria. Some herbs stimulate the liver. Some herbs can help balance digestive bacteria. On Saturday after our talk we will have an optional workshop on how to use fermentation to help reduce antinutrients in foods and how to customize ferments depending on your food sensitivities or other complex issues.

Mistakes We Make on the Healing Journey​

When I reflect on my own healing journey and observe the healing journeys of others, I notice various patterns that I think could be considered "mistakes" that hinder our progress ..
  1. Thinking we can figure it all out by ourselves
  2. Haphazard activity rather than an organized, systematic, bio-individualized process
  3. Looking for "magic bullets"
  4. Allowing belief systems to constrain our options
  5. Dysfunctional financial considerations
Thinking we can figure it all out by ourselves
Those of us that have been focused on health for many years often think that we know more than we actually do, and this can cause us to be overly self-reliant.
The reality is that if we haven't solved our health challenges, that is probably evidence that we need to interface with others to get additional perspectives.
I have found that even getting the "wrong", unhelpful perspectives or answers from highly qualitifed practitioners actually helps me to find better, more helpful answers and solutions.
Haphazard activity rather than an organized, systematic, bio-individualized process
We read books, we attend webinars, we watch summits and docu-series, and many times we learn something that seems to make sense of our issues.
So we go on a supplement shopping spree, or we dive into a liver cleanse, or fasting, or a ketogenic diet, or whatever, all without any doing any bio-individuality assessment to see if any of these things are the best next step for our body right now.
This often results in wasted money and disappointing, inconsistent, or temporary results. But not always. Sometimes we get lucky.
Yet it may still generate only partial resolution of our health issue(s).
Looking for "magic bullets"
Even in the natural medicine world, there is a lot of "magic bullet" thinking. It seems to be driven by a desire or believe that things should be simple.
Here are some of the magic bullets you may have been exposed to:
  1. Water fasting
  2. Plant-based, raw food, paleo, or carnivore diets
  3. Colon and liver cleansing
  4. Removing heavy metals
  5. Mega-dose supplementation
All of these things can produce miraculous results, but none of these is right for everybody all of the time.
The key is in correctly reading what is going on with an individual and what is most appropriate for them at that time.
Einstein is quoted as saying, "Make everything as simple as possible, but not simpler."
That means we need to actually understand how simple something can actually be without over-simplification.
And unfortunately, the world's increasingly complex web of unhealthy influences has generated more complexity in the realm of illness and biological dysfunction.
Allowing belief systems to constrain our options
Many of us have come to believe things like a plant-based diet is the healthiest diet for everybody, or disease is only caused by a lack of nutrients and/or a surplus of toxins, or every illness is caused by emotions, or all disease starts in the gut.
There's a lot of truth to these ideas, but none of them represent the entire truth.
If we get overly-focused on any of these ideas, we miss the rest of reality.
And believing in some of these ideas means that we have to disbelieve in others, preventing us from availing ourselves of all possible options.
But the bottom line is that limiting our options can limit our results.
Dysfunctional financial considerations
Going through health challenges has a way of putting us in the "poor house".
We might have spent money freely for a while with a practitioner or with many practitioners, and got nowhere, depleting our finances and our willingness to spend more.
As a result, we can develop a habit of limiting what we spend on the process of getting well. And this is understandable.
But it can start to get dysfunctional if we are no longer willing to try another source of assistance, or if we are only willing to spend a small amount at a time, like say $50 or $100 for each increment of additional help.
This would probably limit us to testing self-prescribed supplements, or purchasing health summits, but it would not enable us to obtain advanced testing and analysis of our condition.
We can end up nickeling and diming ourselves to death over the years, in the end spending thousands of dollars without making big progress.
Over-self-reliance, haphazard activity, magic bullet seeking, belief systems, dysfunctional financial considerations ... these are some of the pitfalls that I've experienced and seen others experience.

In the 2013 movie, Escape Plan, Arnold Swarzenegger’s character tells Sylvester Stallone that he “hits like a vegetarian.”
It’s a pretty funny moment, especially because now Arnold has become a huge advocate for plant-based foods.

How to Do a VERY Effective Liver-Gallbladder Flush​

Gut health, brain health, heart health, hormonal balance, blood sugar regulation, and a whole lot more all depend on healthy liver and gallbladder function.

Flushing liver stones, gallstones, and bile sludge out of the liver and gallbladder is essential for most people to experience optimal function throughout body.

And Spring is the best time of year to improve liver and gallbladder health with liver / gallbladder flushes.

Almost 15 years ago when I started working with a new health practitioner, she told me to do multiple liver / gallbladder flushes until no more stones came out for two consecutive flushes, and then to do one flush a year after that.

I proceeded to do about one flush per month for 13 or 14 months straight because that's how many flushes it took before I had a couple of flushes that didn't release any stones.

This flush protocol was like no other that I had tried in the past, involving almost a week of softening the stones and preparing the liver and gallbladder to release them.

At this point I should address the warnings that are sometimes given by health practitioners about liver / gallbladder flushes.

According to them, some people doing a liver / gallbladder flush have had a gallstone lodge in the bile duct and had to go to the hospital for surgery.

On the other hand, people have used liver / gallbladder flushes to remove big stones and avoid this kind of surgery, a surgery that is probably inevitable if stones large enough to eventually get stuck aren't flushed out before they cause a crisis.

A great example of this is in the book, The Amazing Liver Gallbladder Flush. The book includes the story of a woman who was scheduled for surgery to remove large stones, did the flush, and was able to cancel the surgery.

I think the difference lies in the fact that not all flushes are created equal.

My guess would be that people who may have landed in the hospital after a liver / gallbladder flush used a protocol that did not include a period of using substances that soften and break up stones so that they could pass easily.

They probably just got up one morning and downed a bunch of olive oil and lemon juice.

I've also heard some practitioners say that what people think are gallstones being passed are just gobs of the olive oil that they consumed with the flush.

This is an absurd idea that is easily disproven by several things:

  1. A review of the physical properties of olive oil (For example, olive oil cannot turn hard at body temperature inside your body, especially when mixed with bile, a powerful emulsifier of fat.)
  2. The diversity of sizes, shapes, colors, and degrees of buoyancy (or lack of buoyancy) of stones expelled
  3. The simple fact that the results of each flush can be vastly different from flush to flush, even though the exact same protocol is used
And after a suffiicent number of flushes, people typically experience functional improvements like increased ability to digest fats.

In other words, something that was impairing fat digestion was eliminated by the flushes. That would probably be the gallstones that were expelled.

It's not rocket science, and it's also not folklore, as some people would have you believe.

For a more detailed exploration of merits of liver / gallbladder flushes, I recommend reading the book, The Amazing Liver Gallbladder Flush.

The book is great, but I believe that the flush protocol that I learned is superior to the one that is discussed in the book.

The key is intelligently preparing for the flush with a week of stone-softening malic acid, orthophosphoric acid, certain botanicals, and taking steps to dilate the bile duct before and during the flushing process.

If you're serious about your health, doing effective liver / gallbladder flushes are essential.

How Does Aspirin Prevent a Heart Attack?

Most heart attacks occur when plaque on the wall of one of the heart’s trio of coronary arteries blocks the forward flow of blood. Aspirin works to prevent this by binding with an enzyme called cyclooxygenase-1 (COX-1) to disrupt the blood-clotting process.

In addition, aspirin is in a class of medications called nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), which act against inflammation. When a blood vessel becomes damaged — due to aging, cholesterol buildup, or for other reasons — fatty deposits (called plaque) form on its walls.

The body’s normal response is to send immune cells such as white blood cells to the site of the damage. The action of the immune cells causes inflammation, which can make plaque vulnerable to rupture.

Inflammation also plays a role in the development of cancer. Recent research suggests that people who take a daily low-dose aspirin may reduce their risk for cancers of the colon, rectum, stomach, prostate, lung, and breasts.
