By staying focused on worst-case scenarios, you fail to keep an open mind about the situation at hand. We can only control ourselves in the present moment.

Think of your past experiences. Life has always been full of uncertainty. And you were always able to cope.

You're now wiser and have more insights on how to deal with things. You are perfectly capable of handling uncertainty.

Remember that situations can change for the better. You got this. Focus on how you can get through today. Take life moment by moment.

Resist the urge to go back to your old ways of thinking. Whenever you recognize you're ruminating or having an unhelpful thought, quickly distract yourself.

Give yourself a mantra you can repeat, such as "stay in the present," or "I'm stronger than my thoughts".

You already know what happens when you engage with negative thoughts. You feel anxious and helpless and lose sight of what you can actually control.

That's why you have to remind yourself to stop thinking those thoughts and focus on something that's uplifting.

Just like you need regular exercise to strengthen your body, thinking helpful thoughts every day is necessary to build a powerful mindset that allows you to progress forward in life.

Have you been diagnosed with Hashimoto’s?

Hashimoto’s is an autoimmune disease of the thyroid gland. Most commonly, people with Hashimoto’s will experience:

  • Cold hands and feet
  • Low or inconsistent energy
  • Variable mood, anxiety or depression
  • Hair loss
  • Weak nails
  • Recurring constipation or diarrhea

Do you experience one or more of these symptoms regularly?

Identifying Hashimoto’s
I’ve personally experienced the impacts of a Hashimoto’s diagnosis. Although, my Hashimoto’s discovery was a complete fluke. After years of struggling with common symptoms of Hashimoto’s, I was finally diagnosed by a simple blood test and my life was forever changed. Little did I know, my mother had been struggling with the same misdiagnosis for over 30 years!

If you suspect that Hashimoto’s might be to blame for your mystery symptoms, it’s important to work with a practitioner who can make an accurate assessment. In my experience, utilizing a variety of functional tests to identify autoimmunity and other chronic illnesses is essential. Until proper identification is made, true healing cannot begin!

Beware the Threat of Silent Heart Attack

Have you ever heard of someone suffering a massive, fatal heart attack without any warning and wondered how that could possibly happen? Unfortunately, it happens all too often, and the truth of the matter is that there may have been a warning that went unnoticed.

The warning is called a “silent heart attack,” or SMI (“silent myocardial infarction), which can occur without symptoms or with none that were recognized as a cardiac event requiring urgent medical attention.

Special: Dr. Crandall Saved His Own Heart With This

In fact, 45% of all heart attacks are silent, and they significantly increase the risk of a second, potentially fatal heart attack, sudden cardiac arrest, or damage to the heart muscle.

What occurs during a silent heart attack is exactly the same as a regular heart attack; they are described as "silent" merely because their symptoms lack the intensity of a classic heart attack. They are a major health problem because having one increases the chances of a subsequent heart attack, heart disease complications, and even premature death.

Unlike the obvious symptoms of a normal heart attack — which can involve severe chest pain, breaking into a cold sweat, shortness of breath, and lightheadedness — symptoms a silent heart attack are more subtle, and can come and go. But you should call 911 if you experience any of these symptoms:

  • Discomfort in the center of the chest that lasts several minutes, or goes away and comes back. It can feel like an uncomfortable pressure, squeezing, or pain. This symptom can be misinterpreted as heartburn.
  • Discomfort in other upper-body areas, such as one or both arms, the back, the neck, the jaw, or the stomach. Often, this can feel like a pulled muscle.
  • Shortness of breath before or during exercise, easily misinterpreted as just feeling winded.
  • Fatigue, sometimes passed off due to aging, or lack of sleep.
  • Breaking out in a cold sweat, or feeling nauseated or lightheaded.

The Liver-Thyroid Axis​

Liver and thyroid function have important two-way, reciprocal interactions.
Impaired liver function can impair the conversion of the T4 to T3 thyroid hormone.
T4 is the "inactive" form of thyroid hormone (though it does have a small amount of activity), and T3 is the main "active" form of thyroid hormone.
Lower amounts of T3 in the body contributes to low thyroid function (hypothyroidism).
And any form of low thyroid function, whether caused by low conversion of T4 to T3 or caused by issues, impairs the cytochrome P450 phase 1 liver enzymes.
So it can become a viscious cycle with poor liver function reducing thyroid function, further reducing liver function, or poor thyroid function reducing liver function, further reducing thyroid function.
So liver and thyroid issues typically go hand-in-hand, and in most cases both liver and thyroid function need to be addressed together.
The main exception is when liver dysfunction is the only cause of thyoid dyfunction, or when thyroid dysfunction is the only cause of liver dysfunction.
But in either case, something else is usually causing the liver or thyroid dysfunction, which is why we need to always be looking for root causes.
Some of the most common causes of liver dysfunction include the following:
  1. Inadequate production and dietary intake of phosphatidyl choline, which is necessary for producing good quality and quantity bile that flows easily
  2. Inflammation, most often from lipopolysaccharides from dysbiotic gut bacteria or dental issues like gingivitis, periodontitis, or cavitations around root canals or tooth extraction sites (e.g. wisdom teeth)
  3. Excess consumption of carbohydrates, espcially with high fructose consumption, which leads to fatty liver
  4. Overload with toxins beyond the liver's ability to keep up, with mold toxins being one of the worst culprits
  5. Unresolved emotions of anger and/or resentment
By the way, some of the causes above aren't always "root causes", and we may need to look deeper to find their root cause.
Any time the liver is not working well, it can lead to inadequate production and/or excretion of bile, resulting in the formation of gallstones, bile sludge, and an accumulation of toxins in the liver and the rest of the body.
Some of the most common causes of thyroid dysfunction include the following:
  1. Anything that elevates cortisol, such as chronic stress, infection, toxicity, or calorie restriction
  2. Iodine deficiency or excess
  3. Reactivity to gluten and/or other gut-related issues
  4. Certain toxins that particularly impact the thyroid gland, like mercury
  5. Deficiency of selenium, zinc, and/or iron
Thyroid issues almost never exist in a vacuum, yet thyroid disease is so often treated like an isolated phenomenon.
But thyroid disease is rarely an isolated phenomenon and usually has a cause, or multiple causes, that can be identified and very often resolved.
Because the body is so complex, with so many interactions and feedback loops, I am use "maps" of these interactions and feedback loops to sort through symptoms to identify, test, and confirm or rule out potential root causes.
I've shown one of these maps in past emails, the "Pyramid" report that shows a person's genes in a pyramid structure. Here it is again ...

Another map that I am creating is a set of assessments (questionnaires). The assessment system is evolving and may eventually become a software.
One of the benefits of a system that provides greater clarity about what is going on in your body is that it reduces or eliminates uncertainty and confusion about what to eat during the different phases of your heailng process and even the different stages of your entire life.
And if you're growing food, think how important it is to know what food will best support you!
It would suck to invest in growing foods that are not optimal for you!
And the more you know about what foods best support you, the more passion you will have to grow them.
Knowing more about your bio-individuality and what is going on in your body also enables more accuracy and precision in the choice of supplements.
And perhaps most importantly, this systematic approach can help to identify causes of health issues that have nothing to do with food and nutrition, thereby correctly guiding the focus of your efforts and preventing you from losing years and thousands of dollars focused on the wrong things.
My biggest recommendation to anybody that is working on health issues is to use some kind of structure or system that contains as much of the "big picture", details, and interactions as possible to effectively and efficiently guide the process of achieving optimal health.

As you begin your journey on a plant-based diet, you may start to get questions from friends and family. Any time you eat differently than the norm, you’re bound to get some pushback.
It’s like, you could eat fast food for every meal for 10 years and nobody will bat an eye... But trade a fried chicken meal for a green salad topped with sunflower seeds, and everybody suddenly worries about you shriveling up and wasting away!
You may hear, “Why are you eating that?” Or, “Why aren’t you eating that?”
But some of the most frequently asked questions you might encounter on a plant-based diet have to do with nutrients. “Where do you get your protein?” Or “Where do you get your calcium or iron?”
In their July 2019 meetings, the meat, dairy, and egg industries rolled out a new propaganda playbook of the Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee of the US government. Their goal? Scare people into eating lots of animal products for fear of choline deficiency.
Many people believe you can’t get all the nutrients you need without animal products. But plants have protein, calcium, and iron in abundance, in addition to a host of other vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants…
(And yes, many plants are abundant sources of choline.)
In fact these days, people are far more likely to be deficient in fiber than protein. Only 3% of Americans get their daily amount of recommended fiber.
But that’s not a problem when you’re eating mostly plants!
Still, if you’re wondering how much protein, iron, or calcium you really need, and what plant-based foods to get them from, you need to educate yourself.

Are Supplements Necessary?​

No matter how you choose to eat, in the modern world, most diets are lacking in something. In the case of plant-based diets, there are a few nutrients that are especially important to pay attention to.
Supplements you may need on a plant-based diet are:
  • Vitamin B12
  • Vitamin D3
  • Omega-3 fatty acids
  • Vitamin K2
  • Zinc
In the case of these nutrients, supplements may be necessary to avoid a deficiency.

Greetings, Friend​

Are you familiar with the story of the two wolves?

The story of the two wolves is an ancient teaching story that has been a part of Native American traditions for generations.

While we don’t know exactly who told it first, historians typically attribute the tale to the Cherokee or the Lenape people. It goes like this:​


A young boy and his Grandfather are sitting together...​

Wistfully looking off into the distance, the Grandfather sighed and said, “I have a fight going on deep within my chest."​

“It’s taking place between two wolves. One is black-hearted – he is full of self-pity, anger, envy, sorrow, regret, greed, guilt, resentment, distress, inferiority, lies, false pride, superiority, and ego.”​

The Elder looked at his grandson and went on.​

“The other wolf's heart is full of joy, peace, love, hope, serenity, humility, kindness, benevolence, empathy, generosity, truth, healing, and compassion.​

Both wolves are strong and fighting to the death."​



After a long pause, the Grandfather said, "The same fight is going on inside you, my son... and every other person, too.”

The grandson thought about it for a long while... and then asked, “Which wolf will win, Grandfather?”

The Grandfather simply said, “The one you feed.”​



During these challenging times, we can choose to feed more and more uncertainty, distress, and suffering by how we focus our energy.​


In his talk a few days ago, Master Mingtong invited us to focus on something in each of our lives that is life affirming; to contribute to the nourishment of life instead of the destruction of life. (You can listen to it here - Week 3.)


On our path of growth and healing, our daily thoughts and actions determine which wolf we feed. Ask yourself now, What belief system are you feeding? Where are you focusing your energy?​


In the midst of destruction we can choose life.
