Let’s chat about AA.

Nope, not Alcoholics Anonymous. Amino acids.

What are they? What do they do? And which ones are the most important for brain health?

What Are Amino Acids? 🤔

Amino acids are the building blocks of protein-based tissues in the body such as muscles, skin, hair, and enzymes. However, they are also essential in the production of neurotransmitters, which are chemicals in the brain that either excite or inhibit neurons.

This means they play a key role in the regulation of central neurotransmission, cognitive performance and attention, and mood state. If certain amino acids are either elevated or lowered, this can have a significant impact on brain function and behaviour.

Which Amino Acids Can Help Your Brain Health And Mood? 🔎

So what are the top amino acids when it comes to brain health and mood?

1. Tryptophan

Tryptophan is the rarest of the essential amino acids found in food and is the precursor of serotonin. Serotonin is important for providing a feeling of calm and well-being. A deficiency of serotonin can result in depression, anxiety, insomnia, excessive anger, and mood swings.

Tryptophan-rich foods include pumpkin seeds, walnuts, soy, legumes, quinoa, mushrooms, spinach, watercress, and oat bran.

2. Tyrosine

Tyrosine is the precursor of three neurotransmitters: norepinephrine, dopamine, and epinephrine. These are important for maintaining a sense of well-being and energy, as well as promoting a healthy nervous system.

Tyrosine is not considered essential as it can be produced from another amino acid called phenylalanine. However, some studies suggest that the brain may not be able to synthesise sufficient amounts from phenylalanine to meet its needs. Both norepinephrine and dopamine are believed to play a critical role in the brain’s response to acute stress.

Dopamine, the "feel good" neurotransmitter, also helps produce feelings of optimism and enthusiasm. Epinephrine, also known as adrenalin, helps sustain blood sugar, and both noradrenalin and adrenalin are very anti-inflammatory which is crucial to a healthy brain and nervous system.

Protein-rich foods such as quinoa, legumes, nuts, and seeds can be helpful in boosting your tyrosine intake.

3. Acetyl-L-Carnitine

Acetyl-L-Carnitine and its sister compound called L-Carnitine play critical roles in our energy, metabolism and nervous system. They also work as antioxidants and promote the production of glutathione, a free radical scavenger.

The effects of Acetyl-L-Carnitine in the brain include improved memory, increased mood, a sense of motivation, and a boost in concentration. In addition, Acetyl-L-Carnitine has been shown to increase the levels of the neurotransmitters noradrenaline and serotonin.

Your body maintains a fairly constant level of carnitine. Generally your body makes sufficient carnitine to meet your daily needs.

4. Glutamine

Our final amino acid on our list is L-glutamine. Glutamine increases energy, stamina, and focus—all of which improve overall cognitive function. It appears to have a role in the production, or more accurately, the "recycling" of two neurotransmitter compounds called glutamate and GABA.

Glutamate is the most abundant neurotransmitter in the human body and is believed to be heavily involved in memory and learning processes. Glutamine is also believed to remove metabolic residue in the brain, acting as a detox and improving brain function.

Good plant-based sources include nuts, legumes, quinoa, tofu, spinach, cabbage, and beetroot.

Heart Meds Might Lower Arthritis Pain

Commonly used beta blocker heart medicine may also reduce the risk of knee and hip osteoarthritis and pain, a recent study suggests.

Study co-authors Georgina Nakafero and Abhishek Abhishek, from the University of Nottingham in England, noted that no "specific therapy exists for OA [osteoarthritis] and medical management focuses on analgesia," but that "currently used analgesics have modest efficacy for OA pain, and drugs such as NSAIDs and opioids frequently cause side effects."

The researchers said they "hypothesized that if beta blockers can reduce pain due to OA, they will reduce primary care consultation rates for knee or hip pain, and knee or hip OA."

Researchers analyzed data from nearly 112,000 people aged 40 and older in the United Kingdom, who began a first-ever beta-blocker regimen, defined as at least two prescriptions within a 60-day period. They were compared with an equal number of people who weren't prescribed beta blockers.

A beta blocker prescription was associated with a reduced cumulative risk for knee arthritis, knee pain, and hip pain consultations in primary care.

Two specific beta blockers, propranolol and atenolol, were both associated with a lower incidence of knee arthritis and knee pain consultations. Beta blockers were also associated with a reduced risk of consultation for large-joint, lower-limb arthritis and related pain.

Most of us have an accumulated build-up of pesticide exposure in our bodies due to numerous years of exposure. This chemical "body burden" as it is medically known could lead to health issues such as headaches, birth defects, and added strain on weakened immune systems.
Some toxins can be absorbed through your skin. Personal care products, like shampoos, make-up, perfumes, and lotions often contain parabens, formaldehyde, and phenoxyethanol. As these products are absorbed, those toxins come into the body too.
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has 80,000 chemicals registered for daily use. Of those, only about 250 currently have testing to assess their safety.
The United States uses 18,000 pesticides and sprays 5 billion (yes, Billion) pounds of pesticides per year. Only 1% of these pesticides make it to the targeted pest which means 99% of pesticides sprayed end up somewhere else.

They are found in:​

  • Soil and dirt we track through our home.
  • Water cooler jugs and canned foods not listed as BPA free.
  • Teflon and non-stick pans.
  • Carpeting, particle board furniture and cabinetry, cushions, upholstery fabric and paint. These all off-gas toxins for years.
  • Cleaning supplies and dry-cleaned clothes.
  • Flame-retardant products.
  • Air fresheners, scented candles, detergents and fabric softeners, soaps and deodorants.
  • Shower water treated with chlorine.
  • Non-organic produce.
  • Non-organic meat and dairy products.
  • Farm raised fish.
  • Cigarette smoke and tailpipe exhaust.

A poor detox system also contributes to allergic disorders, asthma, hives, psoriasis, and eczema. Thankfully, our liver works to neutralize harmful chemicals, viruses, and bacteria. The liver is the main detoxifying organ. It weighs about 3 pounds and is the second largest organ in the body, second only to skin.

  • Processes all of the blood leaving the digestive tract
  • Metabolizes carbohydrates, fats, and proteins into usable forms
  • Stores many nutrients – glycogen; fatty acids; vitamins A, D, E, K and B12; iron and copper – to provide a constant supply of these essential substances to the body
  • Metabolizes alcohol and drugs into their inactive metabolites
  • Metabolizes hormones produced by the body’s own glands
  • Protects the body from toxins

Optimal liver health is key for overall good health!​

Here’s what you can do to protect your liver:​

› Avoid foods containing artificial dyes and preservatives. If the ingredients list is hard to pronounce, it’s probably even harder on your body.
› Choose organic meats. Thankfully, they are becoming more and more available at grocery stores around the country.
› Consume whole, live foods. Fruits, vegetables, and whole, unprocessed grains (unless you are gluten sensitive) are the healthiest foods to eat. These foods are loaded with antioxidant, cancer-fighting, and immune-boosting phytonutrients.
› Enjoy foods from the Brassica family: broccoli, cabbage, and Brussels sprouts. They contain phytochemicals that stimulate phase I and phase II liver detoxification pathways.

Why Did My Cholesterol Drop by 112 Points?​

Between March of 2019 and October of 2021 my total cholesterol dropped by 112 points.
Why?
I don't know.
But I have a few hunches :)
First, it's important to realize that total cholesterol is usually not what's important.
Things like oxidized LDL, ratios like the LDL / HDL, apolipoproteins A1 and B, particle number and size, etc matter much more than total cholesterol.
And these are just indicators of what is happening with the gut, liver, mouth, toxins, nutrients, oxidative stress, and inflammation in general.
Abnormal cholesterol is rarely something that should be treated directly. Instead, the cause should be investigated and addressed.
In general, you want to ...
  1. Resolve gut issues (e.g. dysbiosis, food sensitivities, permeability, inflammation)
  2. Improve liver / gallbladder function
  3. Eliminate gingivitis, periodontal disease, and/or cavitations and other dental foci (e.g. infections at the sites of extracted teeth or root canals)
  4. Detox heavy metals and other toxicants
  5. Improve the body's ability to repair damage to the endothelial lining of arterties
Much of the time, the issue is in the liver, so as a general rule most people concerned about elevated cholesterol could begin by improving liver / gallbladder function, which is the topic of a training I'll be hosting next week.
So back to my cholesterol numbers ... are you curious?
Some of my March 2019 numbers:
Total cholesterol: 289
LDL cholesterol: 183
HDL cholesterol: 94
LDL/HDL ratio: 1.95
Some of my October 2021 numbers:
Total cholesterol: 177
LDL cholesterol: 108
HDL cholesterol: 53
LDL/HDL ratio: 2.0
Does this mean I'm healthier?
Not necessarily, but it probably does mean that something has shifted for the better in my physiology.
My guess is that I might be one or all of the following:
  1. Eliminated a source of intestinal inflammation like Klebsiella pneumoniae, which I knocked out with antimicrobial herbs in late 2020.
  2. Improved the fluidity and flow of my bile by taking more sunflower lecithin and eating more eggs, which I started doing in mid-2021.
  3. Further alkalinized my diet starting in mid 2020 with more juicing and blending of vegetables, which could have reduced oxidative stress and inflammation while promoting detoxification.
I'm still eating just as much saturated fat and cholesterol, which are generally only an issue for people with gut inflammation and permeability and/or the dreaded APOE4 gene variant. I am fortunate to have APOE3.
Elevated cholesterol should primarily be viewed as a marker of liver/gallbladder congestion, oxidative stress, and inflammation, which are really just signs and mediators of something deeper to be investigated and addressed.

Flushes are great for removing liver stones, gallstones, congested (thickened) bile, and other crud out of the liver, but you don't actually need to do flushes to accomplish this!
