Dark Chocolate Improves Vision

A few bites of dark chocolate might offer a slight and temporary bump up in vision quality, research suggests. Heart-healthy compounds called flavanols appeared to sharpen eyesight for a group of 30 healthy young adults.

There’s been evidence in prior studies that the antioxidant flavanols in dark chocolate might help boost blood flow to the nervous system, boost heart function, and even help preserve the aging brain.

To find out, researchers had 30 healthy adults, averaging 26 years of age, eat either a 1.5-ounce Trader Joe’s 72% Cacao Dark Chocolate bar or a similar-sized Trader Joe’s Crispy Rice Milk Chocolate bar.

Labels were removed from each bar so participants didn’t know what type of chocolate they were eating. About two hours later, each participant underwent vision testing using standard letter-based eye charts.

The result? Compared to people who’d eaten milk chocolate, those who’d snacked on the dark chocolate showed “small enhancements in visual acuity and large-letter contrast.”

RESPONSIBILITY​

I’m back! After a busy, busy summer away from Solis to work on an outdoor Shakespeare show, I will now be back to posting in the FB group and sending out this newsletter more regularly. I always find it a challenge to step away from Solis, not because anyone makes me feel bad for doing so, but because I do that to myself.
I’ve always been hard on myself and push myself more than I should (I’m quite certain that was a contributing factor in my cancer diagnosis). When I fall short of the expectations I’ve set for myself, no matter how high or admittedly unreasonable, I pour on the guilt and anxiety and start questioning myself. I'm working on it! But even while writing these words, I know there is a part of me that will disagree and question the advice I’m about to give. But truer, better advice there never was, so here we go.
There are many types of people in this world, with many types of needs, natural rhythms of operating, levels of energy, and ability to focus. Unfortunately, on the whole, our society recognises one way as the “right” way to go about life. You get up early, you work hard, you put so much more time and energy into the care of those around you than you do yourself, and you remain reachable and available at a moment's notice thanks to technology. When you’re feeling things weighing on you and debating taking a break, or even scaling back or shifting priorities, it can be extremely difficult to untangle your feelings about it and decide what you really do need and what’s just guilt and pressure.
I know for me, I struggle with always putting my responsibilities above caring for myself, and if you’re the same, hear this (Are you listening, Rebecca? 😜). To care for yourself, to take the pressure off, to recognize that slowing down, resting and recharging are just as important as everything else, this is a responsibility, a responsibility to yourself. And at the end of the day, our priority should be ourselves and our health.
Short term, this might feel selfish, but long term, it’s actually the most selfless and logical choice. When you feel that guilt creeping in, remember that without our physical, mental, and emotional health, everything else is affected, including our other responsibilities. So, you really should be at the top of your list, for your sake but also for the sake of everything else. Let that guilt go. Keep yourself running happily so that you can be there when and where you’re needed.

Diet and Nutrition: Recipes​

Last week, I was a little bored of my go-to breakfast, so I tried my hand at making a breakfast bowl, and it turned out great! It was a delicious way to get in a bunch of veggies and healthy fats, plus I used aaaalll the anticancer ingredients and spices like onion, garlic, turmeric, and cumin. It is also extremely flexible, giving you the ability to completely customise the ingredients to suit your preferences, or whatever you have in your fridge

And a great tip, mince your garlic at least 15 minutes before you cook it! Most of the health benefits of garlic, including its anti-cancer effects, are attributed to a compound it contains called allicin. Allicin is very sensitive to heat, however, and can be easily destroyed by the heat of cooking. Allicin production starts within seconds of garlic being cut, but letting it to sit for 15 minutes allows the maximum amount of allicin to develop and helps to ensure you benefit from it even after cooking. To take it even further, let your chopped garlic sit in the cooking oil for those 15 minutes before adding both to the pan; the beneficial compounds will infuse into the oil and help to preserve them through the cooking process even more.

Free Resources: Interviews​

The more I learned about cancer and the myriad of things that can contribute to its development, the more I realised that there was a lot of emotional work I needed to do. This included grieving, working through trauma, discovering and developing my true self, asking for and granting forgiveness, working on my gratitude practice, and more. Dr. V hosted an interview with Victoria Johnson on her podcast recently, a teacher and coach trainer for Heal Your Life® Training, based on the work of Louise Hay. Listening to this episode is a great way to get started on your own emotional work because they touch upon some important healing techniques such as Mirror Work, self-forgiveness, and not resenting breast cancer (this last one was life changing for me when I achieved it).

In the same email from her, Dr. V also shared a thought to ponder, that cancer is a message of love. Your body has been whispering to you for years, but it did not get your attention. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve said this, that I was ignoring my body and its attempts to get my attention for YEARS. It was telling me that things were off and it needed my help, but I just wouldn’t listen. And so finally, it sent me something I couldn’t ignore. Accept your body’s message of love with open arms, and use Dr. V’s interview with Victoria Johnson to dive into some of that emotional work. Your body, heart, mind, and soul will thank you.

Diet and Nutrition: Recipes​

After changing my diet post-cancer, I struggled with getting enough veggies into my diet, because I definitely didn’t eat enough of them pre-diagnosis! Something that helped me pack those powerful plants in was smoothies, and I’ve shared a couple of my own anti-cancer smoothies in the past (you can find those posts here and here). Naturopath extraordinaire and integrative cancer care specialist, Dr. Lori Bouchard, recently started a YouTube channel, and she shared her own anti-cancer smoothie recipe there.

Resources: Free Events​

It’s here! Many of you are familiar with Radical Remission, one of the best known books on incredible, against-the-odds, integrative cancer healing. They have finally made a docuseries that covers the healing modalities talked about in the book and includes interviews with many of the healthcare practitioners and patients from the book, and it starts airing for FREE next week! Hay House is doing a free screening of the series beginning on Oct. 3, and the topics covered include radically changing your diet, empowering yourself, releasing suppressed emotions, herbs and supplements, bringing exercise and movement into your life, deepening your spiritual connection, following your intuition, and more!

Heart disease is the No. 1 killer in the United States. Yet many Americans ignore key warning signs that come from the heart — until it’s too late. Here are four signs that you might be having heart trouble.

1. Persistent cough. If you cough while lying down and stop coughing when you sit up, it can mean you have congestive heart failure. When your heart isn’t beating properly, fluid backs up your blood vessels and leaks into places like your lungs.

2. Swollen legs. If your ankles are getting thicker, it could be a sign that your heart muscle isn’t pumping efficiently. Veins get backed up and push excess fluid into your body tissues, causing feet, ankles, and legs to swell uncharacteristically. If you feel bloated in unusual places, try pressing on your skin. If it leaves a pitted indent, that means your tissues could be harboring excess fluid and you should see a doctor.

3. Swollen gums. Bleeding or swollen gums cause inflammation, and chronic infection keeps the body’s immune system turned on. Cytokines kill germs but can also punch holes in arteries and produce plaque that can cause heart attack.

4. Palpitations. When your heart has irregular beats or beats too fast, it may be getting weaker. Arrhythmia may cause heart disease if not properly treated. It could also be a sign that you have a bad heart valve, so see your doctor.
