High-fat, low-carb ketogenic (“keto”) diets are gaining praise as an effective tool for battling obesity, diabetes, and heart disease.

“Keto diets have been shown to significantly improve insulin resistance, a hallmark of diabetes, obesity, heart disease, and Alzheimer’s,” said Jonny Bowden, Ph.D., a nutritionist and expert on diet and weight loss. “They also improve many markers that are considered risks for heart disease such as triglycerides, which drop like a rock on a keto diet.”

For decades, we were told to eat a high-carb, low-fat diet. Prior to the 1920s, Bowden says that Americans ate lard, butter, beef, and cheese but both strokes and heart attacks were less common than they are now. On the keto diet, your body uses stored fat as a fuel. While the keto diet resembles the Atkins diet, it’s more sophisticated because we now recommend higher quality fats such as Malaysian palm oil, coconut oil, olive oil, butter and dairy fat, and egg yolks.

I have a delightful tea recipe to share with you today that will strengthen and protect your mind, while giving you a warm pick-me-up.

I call it my "Four-Herb Brain Booster Tea" and one of the main ingredients is an ancient herb from the Far East called ginkgo biloba.

Native to Japan, Korea, and China, the ginkgo biloba is one of the oldest trees on earth. It’s considered a “living fossil,” living for 270 million years without changing. In Traditional Chinese Medicine, ginkgo biloba has been used to treat circulation, asthma, vertigo, and fatigue, while in Iran it’s been used to improve memory.

Recent studies show this unique tree can help increase energy and concentration by stimulating blood flow to your brain while simultaneously protecting it with powerful flavonoids. Ginkgo biloba has a mild flavor — although it’s sometimes used as a digestive bitter — and it pairs well with other tasty brain boosting herbs like lemon balm and tulsi (which are also included in this recipe).

In my house, we love to get a daily dose of herbal medicine by crafting mouthwatering teas - and this is one of our favorites!

Four-Herb Brain Booster Tea

Ingredients:

Serves: 4

2 tablespoons ginkgo biloba (you can find it in tea bags as well)
1 tablespoon lemon balm
1 tablespoons holy basil (tulsi)
1 slice fresh ginger
4 slices lemon
1 teaspoon honey, optional
4 cups water

Preparation:

1. In a medium saucepan, add all herbs and water, and bring to a simmer.
2. Steep for at least 5 minutes. Strain and fill individual mugs.
3. Add 1 lemon slice per cup.
4. Wait for the water to cool down just a bit, then add the honey. Serve immediately.

To keeping your mind young and sharp until well into your hundreds :)

Make a habit of focusing on what you want.

Too often, we spend a lot of time worrying about what could go wrong in our lives.

It takes up your precious energy and leaves you feeling drained. Nothing good comes out of it.

Instead, think about what you do want in your life. Shift your focus to more positive emotions.

Break out of your habitual thought patterns.

Become more aware of your thoughts and train your mind to repeat more helpful thoughts, so you can create new neural pathways in your brain.

Indulging in happy feelings allows you to project positive energy into the world and this way you're more likely to achieve your desires.

You know how to tell the good guys from the bad guys in the old westerns, right?

They had a simple dress code - good guys wore white hats, bad guys wore black. Once you knew this, you pretty well knew everything the character would do. The good guys were good in every context, and the bad guys were always bad.

So much of what you’ll hear about health follows the same script. There are good things you need more of and bad things you must avoid at all costs.

The truth is never that simple.

Too much iodine can trigger thyroid disease, but iodine is not the bad guy. Some people tolerate more of it than others and there are times when iodine needs change.

A woman who is pregnant or breast-feeding will need more than a similar woman who is not.

But how much more is needed and what are the best ways to get that much? What if a woman is also on thyroid meds?

When it comes to emotional eating, there can be so many triggers that cause us to go there.

But in today’s episode, we explore one of the key reasons behind this unwanted eating habit: stress and overwhelm.

Early on in her childhood, Eva often stepped in to raise her seven younger brothers while her hard-working single mom was at work. To ease her overwhelm and loneliness, Eva began comforting and self-soothing herself with food, especially with breads and sweets – a habit she’s continued into adulthood.

Now many years later, Eva still experiences many of the same emotions she did as a kid … heavy responsibility, grief, and exhaustion. Whether it’s raising her autistic kids, dealing with the stress of single motherhood, or simply getting thrown off track by everyday challenges, life can just feel like too much, too often. When she’s having a hard day, Eva reverts to her familiar pattern of binging on her favorite foods, a habit that is especially concerning given her bariatric surgery back in 2015.

So in this session, Marc explores the role of our inner emotional world on our relationship with food and life – and specifically, how various voices and archetypes live inside us and can influence our eating habits.

If you ever feel like you’re fighting against yourself and your deeper goals, it’s likely that you’re pushing up against a conflicting internal voice. As Marc highlights, that can often be our inner child, who will emotionally eat to cope with life’s stresses and traumas.

You know what they say: You are what you eat. And here’s an interesting fact to share when you’re socializing with family during the holidays: That saying is – literally – true.

It turns out that the nutrient density in your body’s tissues is proportional to the nutrient density of your diet. That’s why it is critical that you make the right choices. And to do that, you need the right information.
Nutrient Dense
You’ll get an overview of why eating the Standard American diet (SAD) leads to poor health outcomes, including obesity, chronic disease and shortened lifespan. And I explain why I created two food scoring systems: the ANDI and Nutrient IQ, to help you make the best possible choices.

In my Aggregate Nutrient Density Index (ANDI), I rank foods on a scale of 0-1000, based on their nutrient content per calorie. In this system, powerhouse cruciferous greens like kale and collards get the highest marks (1000), while cheddar cheese comes in at 11.

Nutrient IQ, my new scoring system, scores foods based on portion sizes, rather than calories. This allows you to rate your diet by adding up points for the day, with targets of 700-1000 points for men, and 600-800 points for women.
