Omega-6 & Cancer

I’ve kept silent on this for too long,

(Actually, I guess I haven’t been that silent about it.) ;)

I’m not a big fan of fish oil…

and the vilification of ALL omega-6, and ALL seed oils as being inflammatory / tumor-promoting needs to stop.

I say "ALL" in big letters because yes, hydrogenated / processed / oxidized omega seed oils, both omega-3 & 6, are absolutely some of the worst things you can possibly consume.

Linoleic acid (LA / plant-based omega-6) and Alpha-Linolenic acid (ALA / plant-based omega-3) however, are some of the most important things you can consume.

And on Omega-6 / LA in particular, if it’s so terrible, why are our cell membranes composed of an 11:1 ratio of 6 to 3?

Why is cardiolipin, part of the mitochondrial membrane, ONE HUNDRED PERCENT omega-6?

Our cellular and mitochondrial membranes are quite possibly the most important component of the whole equation to preventing and reversing disease…

ROUNDUP READY CROPS – Engineered to withstand the direct application of Monsanto’s glyphosate-based herbicide Roundup, these were the first GMO crops. In 1996, Roundup Ready soy was planted; in 1997, cotton; in 1998, corn and canola; in 2008, sugar beets; and in 2011, alfalfa. When farmers didn’t rush to buy the expensive, patented seeds, Monsanto‘s seed monopoly allowed it to force them to by taking all the non-GMO seeds off the market. Its devious plot to increase its pesticide sales worked. Roundup quickly became the most-used agricultural chemical of all time, one of the health consequences being an explosion in non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma among pesticide applicators and farmers.
Monsanto’s Roundup Ready GMOs clearly should have been treated as food additives. If they were, Monsanto would have had to prove that no harm would result from their use, through extensive toxicity and feeding studies. Instead, home gardeners, pesticide applicators and farmers have been the guinea pigs. The data from this unethical human field trial is overwhelming. Roundup’s main ingredient glyphosate causes cancer, including non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. It can cross the blood-brain barrier, making it a contributing factor in neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s.
People exposed to Roundup are at a higher risk of infertility. In women, glyphosate may be causing polycystic ovary syndrome and endometriosis, due to its endocrine-disrupting capabilities and reproductive toxicity. In men, glyphosate can negatively impact sperm quality and reduce sperm counts, while decreasing testosterone in male offspring. Mothers’ glyphosate exposure during pregnancy increases their children’s risk of abnormal brain development and poor functioning, including increasing the risks of autism spectrum disorder.

Altruism Is Actually a Fantastic Survival Strategy​

“What do we know about what happens in the brain during an act of altruism? In 2006, neuroscientist Jorge Moll and colleagues provided some of the first evidence to demonstrate what happens in the human brain when a person gives selflessly to another person. In their experiment, the researchers scanned participants’ brains using a functional MRI as participants made decisions about whether to donate money to a charity, oppose donating to a charity, or receive the monetary reward themselves. As they scanned the brains of participants while making decisions, researchers found that those who chose to keep the monetary reward for themselves experienced activity in the mesolimbic reward system, including the ventral tegmental area and the ventral striatum.
The mesolimbic reward system, sometimes referred to as the reward pathway or the mesolimbic pathway, is responsible for releasing dopamine, a neurotransmitter that allows us to feel pleasure and satisfaction. It also plays a role in motivating us to want more, like food and sex. This reward pathway regulates motivation, reinforces learning, and activates incentive salience, which is a cognitive process that makes us experience ‘desire’ or ‘want’.”

Court Orders Trump Administration To Address Pesticide Risks To Endangered Species​

“A U.S. federal judge recently ordered the Trump administration’s Fish and Wildlife Service to complete assessments on the impacts of six pesticides and the steps needed to protect endangered species from them.
This isn’t the first time pesticide safety has come before the Trump administration. In 2017, the Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) conducted an analysis revealing that two pesticides — malathion and chlorpyrifos — were so toxic they posed an existential threat to more than 1,200 endangered animal and plant species, according to an investigation by The New York Times.
However, just before the report’s release, political appointees in the Department of the Interior, which oversees the FWS, blocked its publication and initiated a new process designed to apply a much narrower standard that could downplay the hazards of the pesticides, the Times investigation noted.”

Lyme Disease is a devastating illness - and an epidemic in our practices. Finding the newest innovations and protocols can feel like a scavenger hunt for both patient and practitioner.

Persistent Lyme disease is a poorly understood illness and presents great challenges for practitioners. We originally thought of Lyme disease as primarily an infection caused by the spirochete Borrelia burgdorferi.

In the decades that followed, researchers began identifying other tick-borne bacteria and toxins that frequently accompany Lyme infections.

We have come to realize that the symptoms which we once described as “Lyme disease” frequently involve other bacteria, such as Babesia, Bartonella, Ehrlichia, or Mycoplasma, or rarer species such as the Rickettsia group or Tularemia. Transmitted in the digestive tract of ticks or fleas, these pathogens may be carried by cats, rats, mice, deer, and other animals, depending on the microbe.

Vitamin D Helps Prevent Cancer

When Cole Porter penned the lyrics, "It's delightful, it's delicious, it's delectable, it's delirious; It's dilemma, it's de limit, it's deluxe, it's de-lovely," he wasn't talking about vitamin D. But he could have been, because it also has many definite distinctions.

A study published in the journal Seminars in Cancer Biology points out that in addition to being vital for bone health and immune strength, vitamin D's cancer-preventing powers are pretty impressive. And vitamin D deficiency is associated with increased risk of colon, breast, prostate, and blood cancers.

Special: Doctor: All Multivitamins Are Not the Same

To reap vitamin D's benefits, you need to know how you respond to vitamin D2/D3 supplements.

According to the study’s authors, who are from Finland and Spain, some people are low responders and need higher doses to gain the benefits; some are high responders. That's why it is so important to get a blood test to establish your baseline blood level of vitamin D, and set an initial dose.

You should also go back in two or three months for another test to see if your blood level has gone up enough. If not, increase your dose.

Our recommendation is that you also get 10 minutes a day of sun exposure without sunscreen and take a supplement dose that gives you a blood level reading of 50-80 nanograms per milliliter.

The standard recommendations are to aim for 20 ng/mL to 30 ng/mL, but between indoor living, sunscreen, and poor nutrition, we think the higher blood level is beneficial, with no risks.

Exercise Aids Stroke Recovery

Researchers analyzed 19 studies that included nearly 500 stroke survivors, ages 54 to 71, who completed aerobic exercise programs similar in structure to cardiac rehabilitation.
The patients did two or three aerobic workouts a week for about three months. Walking was the most common type of activity, followed by stationary cycling and mixed aerobic exercise.

The patients' endurance and walking speed were tested before and after they completed the programs. Overall, the patients had significant improvements.
After completing the therapy, they walked an average of nearly half the length of a football field farther during a six-minute walking test. Those with mild movement impairments had the best results.
"These benefits were realized regardless of how long it had been since their stroke," said study lead author Elizabeth Regan, Ph.D., of the University of South Carolina.
Mixed aerobic exercise provided the greatest improvement, followed by walking, cycling, and recumbent stepping, which is a machine that allows stepping while in a seated position.

Science confirms: Even light movement can do wonders for your brain—at any age.

A landmark study from the University of South Australia—the largest and most comprehensive umbrella review to date—reveals that even low-intensity exercise can significantly enhance memory, cognitive function, and executive control in people of all ages, whether healthy or with conditions.

Analyzing 133 systematic reviews covering 2,724 randomized controlled trials and 258,279 participants, researchers found that low-to-moderate intensity exercise had the greatest benefits. Children and teens saw the biggest memory improvements, while people with ADHD experienced notable gains in focus and self-control. Mind-body exercises like yoga and Tai Chi, along with interactive video games like Pokemon Go, also boosted cognition.

Interestingly, short-term programs (1-3 months) showed the most noticeable cognitive gains. Rather than fading, these early improvements may signal how quickly the brain responds to movement, with continued activity helping to sustain or enhance function over time.
