In memory of Arthur Firstenberg (May 28, 1950 – February 25, 2025)

mail

I first read Arthur Firstenberg’s book The Invisible Rainbow: A History of Electricity and Life in 2023. While its detailed and often disturbing information was sometimes difficult for me to take in, the book provided refreshingly clear insights into the mysteries of human health and disease. Firstenberg’s descriptions of the illnesses induced by Man’s electric technologies resonated with my own experiences, observations, and research. I found the book’s explanations and evidence of harm to be compelling. I began exploring the website of Firstenberg’s organization, Cellular Phone Task Force, and I signed up for his Substack newsletter. A few months later, my brother and I co-led a small book group discussion on The Invisible Rainbow, delving deeper into the contents and their implications. As I learn more about the topic of EMFs and health and make changes in my own use of technology, I keep returning to this groundbreaking book as a resource.

'Silent Strokes' Pose Post-Surgery Threat

By Chauncey Crandall, M.D.

Silent strokes are common in seniors who have had surgery, and may double their risk of mental decline within a year, a Canadian study reports.

The recent study included more than 1,100 seniors in North and South America, Asia, New Zealand, and Europe who had elective, non-heart surgery and an MRI brain scan within nine days afterward. One in 14 were found to have had a silent stroke, suggesting that 3 million seniors a year worldwide suffer a covert stroke after surgery, according to The Lancet.

Special: Coronary Heart Disease: 5 Tips to Reduce Your Risk

The researchers followed patients for one year after surgery and found that those who had a silent stroke were more likely than others to have mental ("cognitive") decline, delirium, an overt stroke, or a mini-stroke (transient ischemic attack) during that time.

"Surgeons are now able to operate on older and sicker patients, thanks to improvements in surgical and anesthetic techniques. Despite the benefits of surgery, we also need to understand the risks," said Dr. Marko Mrkobrada, the study's co-principal investigator.

How Does Iodine Inhibit Cancer?

Dr. David Brownstein, M.D., writes:

Iodine in the thyroid gland and the breasts has been shown to produce lipids called iodolactones, which regulate cell cycles. Cancer cells, on the other hand, have no regulation; they keep dividing and dividing until the body is overwhelmed.

Researchers have shown that diseased breasts take up more iodine than normal breast tissue. This lends support to the idea that diseased breast tissue is iodine-deficient. Similar results have been found in the thyroid gland. And many of these studies date back more than 50 years.

Special: Top Doctors Say: Your Immune Function Now More Important Than Ever

Other cancers that could be inhibited by iodine include:

• Colon

• Lung

• Melanoma

• Pancreatic

In addition, glioblastoma and neuroblastoma — two types of brain cancer — have been shown to benefit from iodine therapy.

Iodine is needed by every cell in the body. Deficiency, which is affecting more than 96 percent of Americans, may be responsible for the rapid rise in cancer that we have seen over the last 50 years, a period during which iodine levels have fallen dramatically.

Even with iodized salt, we don’t get enough iodine from our diet. That idea needs to be abandoned.

I think it’s valuable for everyone to supplement with iodine. My average dose for patients is approximately 25 mg per day. I prescribe more for those with diseases of the breast, thyroid, ovaries, uterus, prostate, or pancreas.

I suggest working with a holistic healthcare provider who understands the importance of iodine. A conventional doctor is unlikely to know much about it.

[FREE FROM TGN] Wild Lettuce
Wild lettuce has been used as a medicine forever. The cultivation of lettuce by humans dates back to 10,829 BC. That means the wild varieties such as Lactuca serriola (prickly lettuce) were likely known and used by humans long before this. Wild lettuce is sometimes called "opium lettuce." While it is a potent painkiller, don't worry! This opium alternative doesn't have the same drawbacks associated with other illegal drugs. Nor is it nearly as powerful. Click here to download the 38-page eBook all about wild lettuce—no e-mail address required.

Which is best for maximizing the body's health potential?
While living in my college dorm during the winter of my junior year, I alarmed by friends, family, co-workers, and dorm mates by fasting on exclusively water for 14 days. I absolutely, positively, do not recommend fasting in this context, but at that time I was young, adventurous, motivated, and admittedly a bit reckless. As it turns out, it was one of the most extraordinary experiences of my life. In addition to so many other incredible and some unexpected benefits, my seasonal allergies that burdened a great deal of my childhood and adolescence up until that point in my life diminished by about 90%, which was absolutely amazing to me in addition to being a great relief ...

LONGEVITY SCIENCE

How freezing may help you live longer

mail
Ever wondered why some people willingly submerge themselves in cold water? Scientists at the University of Ottawa have uncovered the biological benefits driving this trend.

In a recent study, researchers tracked 10 male volunteers who endured daily 57.2°F (14°C) water immersions for one hour across seven consecutive days. Blood samples were collected before and after this week-long acclimation protocol to examine changes in cellular function.

Initially, participants' autophagy systems—the cellular cleanup mechanism that removes damaged components and enables your body to better manage stress—struggled to cope with the extreme temperature change. However, by day seven, a remarkable transformation occurred: their autophagic function dramatically improved.

The researchers were amazed by how quickly adaptation occurred in the participants. Beyond just making you feel invigorated, they suggest that these chilly dips may potentially help prevent disease and slow aging at the cellular level.

Would you embrace the cold plunge and give your cells the spring cleaning they might need?

THE GOODNESS GUIDE

Is your digestion too slow, too fast... or just right?

mail
Your bowel habits can reveal a lot about your digestive health. One simple way to check how well things are moving is by testing your stool transit time—how long food takes to travel through your digestive system.

Step 1: Pick a marker food and avoid it for 7–10 days

Choose something colorful, uniquely shaped, or hard to fully digest so it stands out when it shows up in your stool. Good options include corn kernels, beetroot, sesame seeds, or blueberries.

⚠️ Important: If you have food sensitivities, avoid any options that may bother you. Some people react to corn, sesame, or beets.

To get a clear result, make sure the marker food isn’t already in your system by not eating it for a week or so. This washout phase helps set a clean baseline.

Step 2: Eat it, then watch the clock

Once you’re ready, eat your chosen marker food and note the exact time you ate it.

Portion-wise, aim for a small but visible amount—like a handful of corn or seeds, or a few tablespoons of chopped beetroot. You want to spot it easily without causing digestive upset. Precise amounts aren't strictly defined, so focus on visibility.

Step 3: Monitor your stool

Yes, it might feel awkward, but it’s worth it. Keep an eye on your stool over the next couple of days and note when the marker food appears.

What does it mean?
  • 21–24 hours = Great! That’s a healthy transit time.
  • Over 24 hours = Things may be moving slowly, mild constipation could be the cause.
  • Under 12 hours = Your digestion may be too fast, which can affect nutrient absorption.
What next?
  • If transit is slow, try upping your fiber, hydration, and movement and check for possible food intolerances.
  • If transit is fast, you might need support with nutrient absorption and/or calming your digestive system.
📝 A few things to keep in mind

Normal transit time can vary depending on factors like diet, hydration, and underlying health issues. This at-home test offers a helpful snapshot—but it’s not a diagnostic tool. If digestive issues persist, it’s always best to check in with a healthcare professional.

It's not just doomscrolling—any screen time can steal sleep

mail
Whether you're bingeing a show, checking social media, or even reading an article—screen time in bed is linked to poorer sleep, regardless of the activity.

A new study analyzed data from over 45,000 Norwegian university students, tracking their screen habits and sleep patterns. The results? Each additional hour of screen use after going to bed was linked to a 59% higher risk of insomnia and 24 fewer minutes of sleep per night.

Activities tracked included watching movies, social media use, internet browsing, gaming, listening to audio, and reading study-related content. Surprisingly, no one activity stood out; it’s the total time on screens that disrupts rest. Why? Mostly time displacement—when screens delay sleep by pushing back bedtime. But blue light and mental stimulation may also interfere with winding down.

To sleep better, study authors recommend cutting off screen use 30-60 minutes before bed and disabling notifications to avoid nighttime interruptions. Natural sleep hygiene techniques like dietary tweaks and a consistent bedtime routine can also improve both sleep quality and quantity.

GOODNESS ON A PLATE

Wild Garlic Wholemeal Scones

These rustic wholemeal wild garlic scones combine the earthy richness of whole wheat flour with the vibrant, garlicky punch of foraged spring greens. Each tender, flaky bite delivers a perfect balance of savory flavor and wholesome nutrition, making them an irresistible accompaniment to soups or a standout addition to your weekend brunch spread.
mail
Makes approximately 8 scones.

Ingredients:
  • 2 cups wholemeal flour (whole wheat flour)
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/3 cup cold vegan butter
  • 1 cup packed fresh wild garlic leaves, finely chopped
  • 2 tablespoons fresh chives, chopped
  • 3/4 cup unsweetened plant milk (oat or soy works best)
  • 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar
  • Plant milk for brushing
Instructions:
  1. Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. In a small bowl, combine the plant milk with apple cider vinegar and set aside to curdle for 5 minutes (this creates a vegan "buttermilk").
  3. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the wholemeal flour, baking powder, salt, and black pepper.
  4. Add the cold vegan butter to the flour mixture and use your fingertips or a pastry cutter to rub it in until the mixture resembles coarse breadcrumbs.
  5. Gently fold in the chopped wild garlic leaves and chives, distributing them evenly throughout the mixture.
  6. Pour the curdled plant milk into the flour mixture. Stir gently with a fork until the dough just comes together - be careful not to overmix.
  7. Turn the dough onto a lightly floured surface and pat it into a circle about 1-inch (2.5 cm) thick. Don't use a rolling pin as this can make the scones tough.
  8. Use a 2.5-inch (6 cm) round cutter to cut out scones. Press straight down without twisting the cutter. Re-form scraps gently and cut additional scones.
  9. Place the scones on your prepared baking sheet, brush the tops with a little plant milk, and bake for 12-15 minutes until risen and golden brown. Note that wholemeal scones won't rise quite as much as white flour versions.
  10. Transfer to a wire rack to cool slightly before serving.
  11. Serve warm with vegan bitter or dairy-free cream cheese.

Note:
If wild garlic is not available, substitute with 3-4 cloves of regular garlic (minced and lightly sautéed until fragrant but not browned) plus 1/2 cup chopped spinach or arugula for a similar flavor profile.
