Prostate-specific antigen (PSA) is a primary anxiety-provoking biomarker in men. And it’s no wonder: Elevated PSA levels absolutely can indicate prostate cancer or other prostate conditions.

But that isn’t always the case. Over the past decade, we've come to understand that PSA is not a highly reliable marker for prostate cancer, in either direction. It does, however, remain a valuable indicator of overall prostate health. And while lower levels don’t guarantee a cancer-free prostate, they are generally a good sign.

This is especially true when we see PSA values drop in response to targeted lifestyle changes—and here’s why:

Reduction of Prostate Inflammation: Chronic inflammation can elevate PSA levels. Natural anti-inflammatory foods or supplements (like omega-3 fatty acids, curcumin, quercetin or Boswellia) can specifically target inflammation in the body and lower PSA.

Improved Hormonal Balance: Hormonal imbalances, especially testosterone and estrogen imbalances, can influence prostate growth and PSA secretion. Lifestyle changes that naturally balance hormone levels, such as maintaining a healthy weight and exercise, can positively affect PSA levels.

Enhanced Immune Function: A strong immune system, bolstered by a nutritious diet, regular exercise, and adequate sleep, can help the body more effectively manage conditions that might contribute to elevated PSA, such as infections. Vitamins D, C, and E, and herbals like Magnolia bark, Andrographis, and Reishi mushroom are excellent for immune support.

Cellular Health and Antioxidant Activity: Antioxidants combat oxidative stress, which can damage prostate cells and contribute to conditions including benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), which in turn can elevate PSA levels.

A diet rich in antioxidants (found in fruits, vegetables, and certain supplements) can support prostate cellular health and a drop in PSA. Vitamins C, D, and E, zinc, selenium, and alpha lipoic acid have excellent antioxidant activity. Botanicals with great antioxidant power include, curcumin, green tea extract and ginger root.

Final Thoughts and Recommendations

In the realm of prostate health, PSA stands out as a significant biomarker that often causes anxiety. Elevated PSA levels are traditionally associated with prostate cancer or other prostate-related conditions. In my clinical experience, I have observed that PSA levels frequently decrease or stabilize following the initiation of prescribed supplement regimens.

Over recent years, we have come to understand that while PSA is not an infallible indicator of prostate cancer, it remains a valuable marker of overall prostate health. A decrease in PSA levels, usually met with concern when it increases, should logically be viewed positively when it decreases. And, of course, the drop in number relieves the mental anguish of seeing that number go up.

The mechanisms through which natural approaches can lower PSA levels are multifaceted, including reducing prostate inflammation, improving hormone balance, enhancing immune function, and supporting antioxidant activity.

L-arginine is an essential amino acid that is produced in the human body from the amino acid L-citrulline. It is a direct precursor to nitric oxide, which helps dilate blood vessels, including those in the penis.

For a study in the Journal of Endocrinological Investigation, researchers looked at the effects of L-arginine supplementation on men with mild to moderate I am a spammer ban me dysfunction. Supplementation for three months significantly improved I am a spammer ban me dysfunction.

How I organize junk into treasure​


As we head into severe supply chain problems it’s time to re-asses the value of things.
This was filmed quite a while ago when I was homesteading in Texas, and it is still appropriate today.
Many decades ago prior to ever even thinking about sustainability, I was visiting Viet Nam. I was quite young, carefree, and although I didn’t think so, in that place I was fairly wealthy. I’ll never forget the moment when I realized how much I took for granted.
Waiting for a friend, I set an empty water bottle beside a pile of rubble on the street. A woman came by and shyly picked up the bottle and scurried off. The way she held it, that woman valued the bottle very very highly.
I was struck. I realized that yes, that bottle is very valuable. It was clear, unscratched plastic which I still find quite magical. It was strong and lightweight. I had capped it before setting it down so it had a lot of functionality for carrying fluids.
I once read about the destruction of a large seed bank in Afganistan (I think). The seed was eaten of course. But the reason the thieves had come was for the jars the seeds were stored in. Jars were extrmeley valuable.
It’s difficult for us now to think that things could get that bad here in the US. But history has proven over and over again that it can get much worse, and it will. Few fiat currencies have lasted as long as the US Dollar.
The more you get into living as self reliantly as possible, the more you value ‘stuff’. And finding a new use for something is a creative joy. I’ve become more to see things in terms of function: lashing, tubing, container, connector, divider, protection….
On a farm you are continously scavaging from one project to build another.
So in this video I go over the different ways I look at what I’m storing by what sort of protection do the items need? Some things can just stay outside and be OK for quite a few years. Some things need cover from the sun (a powerful dissolver of plastics). Some things need a garage type envirnoment (tools, hardware). And then we built a small 10’x10’ insulated house with a tiny a/c to keep it cool for the very precious stuff like backup food and musical instruments.
It is time now to start saving those thing we would normally toss: jars, plastic pill bottles, wire, plastic cups. You don’t want to be a hoarder and you don’t want to be a junk yard. But you definitely will need resources for what is coming.

See it turns out, not being able to tolerate wine… or having weird reactions to it, especially as you get older, is actually common.

But the reason WHY this happens is often confused.

What Causes Red Wine Reactions?

Most people will blame it on the tannins, sulfites, or sugar in “cheap wine”...

But I have another hypothesis.

Red wine is actually very high in histamines.

Wine is a fermented product. And all ferments contain bacterial byproducts, including histamines. Red wine happens to be higher in histamines than other types, like white or rosé.

But there’s another factor at play.

The alcohol in wine also reduces your natural DAO enzyme activity – the enzyme that breaks down histamine.

In other words…red wine is double-trouble.

You’re adding more histamine (from the wine) while simultaneously slowing down your ability to clear it (thanks to the alcohol).

So if you’re already overloaded with histamines, histamine intolerant, and/or low in DAO?...

Even just one glass of wine can cause crazy reactions:

  • Red face or flushing
  • Headache or pressure in the front of the head
  • Congestion, runny/stuffy nose
  • Rapid heartbeat or anxiety
  • Skin breakouts or itching
  • Brain fog or fatigue the next day
  • Feeling hungover after just one glass
This is especially true if the problems have gotten worse as you get older…because your DAO levels decline more and your histamine bucket starts “overflowing.”

Could you just cut out red wine and fix the problem that way? Of course.

That’s arguably the healthiest option, as there’s no denying that alcohol is a toxin.

But there’s also something to be said about living your life… and if a nice glass of wine with a loved one brings you joy, there’s absolutely benefit in that too.

So if you’re like Shay and I, and still like to enjoy it on occasion…

There’s an easier way.

In our second-to-last email we compared selected nutrient levels in 100 calories of potato with 100 calories of romaine lettuce. We saw that the lettuce was dramatically more nutrient dense, and used that as an example to encourage the inclusion of more vegetables in one’s diet to obtain an abundance of nutrients that support health.

We realize that most people do not eat only mono meals, but include a variety of foods at each meal, and often within the same dish. So, for this comparison we look at three typical plant-based and raw food breakfasts; one starch-based, one composed of only fruit, and the third composed of the same fruits with added kale.

The starch-based breakfast is a bowl of oatmeal that includes 3 ounces of dry rolled oats cooked in water, with one medium apple, 2 tablespoons of raisins, and 1 teaspoon of cinnamon added.

We compare this oatmeal breakfast for selected key nutrients to a fruit-only smoothie consisting of 2 bananas, 2 oranges, 1 cup of fresh or frozen mango and a green smoothie consisting of the ingredients in the fruit-only smoothie plus 2 leaves of kale. The oatmeal provides 474 calories, the fruit-only smoothie contains 471 calories, and the fruit + kale smoothie has 478 calories. This means for all practical purposes this is an “isocaloric” comparison, as we are within a 1% calorie similarity for the smoothies above and below the oatmeal calorie composition.

Starch-Based Breakfast:
Rolled Oats, 100% Whole Grain (3 oz.)
Apple, Fresh, with Skin (1 medium, 3” diameter)
Raisins, Uncooked (2 tbsp., whole pieces)
Cinnamon, Ground (1 tsp.)

Fruit and Vegetable Based Breakfasts:
Banana, Fresh (2 medium, 7” to 7 7/8” long)
Orange, Fresh (2 medium, 2 5/8” diameter)
Mango, Fresh or Frozen (1 cup)
Kale, Raw (optional, shown with and without, 2 leaves)

Each of the meals share many positive nutritional attributes. They are low in total fat, low in saturated fat, and contain no cholesterol. They are high in fiber and are good sources of many important nutrients. They are low in calorie density.

But does this mean the meals are equally healthful? Please look at the table and bar chart below to see how these meals compare to each other for selected nutrient abundance.

Below is the bar chart representation of the table above that illustrates the comparisons, where the meal with the highest nutrient value is assigned 100%, and the meals with the lower nutrient values are shown as the percent value they achieve compared to the food with the greatest nutrient value.

For example, the oatmeal bar for fiber is 85% as high as the smoothie + kale bar for fiber, given that the oatmeal provides about 85% of the fiber that the smoothie + kale meal does, specifically 14.2 grams for oatmeal vs. 16.8 grams for the smoothie + kale. The fruit only smoothie provides 95% as much fiber as the smoothie with added kale. Oatmeal values are shown in tan, the fruit only smoothie values in orange, and smoothie + kale values are shown in green.

All meals are excellent sources of fiber, as they are each made from whole plant foods. To start by comparing the fruit + kale smoothie to the oatmeal, the smoothie meal provides about 3x the omega 3 content and 4x the vitamin E content without a greater percentage of calories from fat, and dramatically more folate, beta carotene, vitamin C, and vitamin K. There is also about double the calcium in the smoothie compared to the oatmeal. The oatmeal provides about 3x the iron as the smoothie, and slightly more magnesium.

To add the fruit-only smoothie into the analysis, we see that compared to the oatmeal, the majority of the increases in folate, beta carotene, vitamin C, and vitamin E came just from the fruit versus the oatmeal. The kale added to the smoothie provided a dramatic increase in vitamin K, moderate but meaningful increases in omega 3s, beta carotene, and calcium, and smaller increases in fiber, folate, vitamin C, iron, and magnesium. We think this nutrient increase is well worth the 7 added calories, given how easy it is to add some kale before blending, and still end up with a smoothie that tastes delicious and is very satisfying.

"The main thing that we can do is make sure that we have ideal body weight because we know if you're overweight, that increases inflammation," Crandall said. "You want to keep your cholesterol down because, again, that can increase inflammation. That can lead to amyloid deposition. We want to stop smoking. Anything that that we do that causes inflammation in the body can cause amyloid formation.
"So the best diet to be on is really the Mediterranean diet because that is an anti-inflammatory diet. And anti-inflammatory diets will reduce amyloid deposition."

‘Cancer Is Just Everywhere’: Could Farming Be Behind Iowa’s Unfolding Health Crisis?​

“For the last few years, Iowa has had the second-highest rate of cancer in the nation, and is only one of two US states where cancer is increasing.

‘People in rural communities are getting sick. Cancer is just everywhere,’ said Kerri Johannsen, senior director of policy at the Iowa Environmental Council, a non-profit focused on improving the environment that is helping to lead the project. ‘Every person I talk to knows somebody that has [recently] had a cancer diagnosis,’ she said. ‘It’s just a constant drumbeat. It’s scary.’

Many residents blame the insecticides, herbicides and other pesticides widely used on farms as well as the state’s persistent problem with high levels of hazardous nitrates that wash off farm fields into the state’s water supply.”
