Depression starts in this organ! (not your brain)

I’m delighted to be one of the feature presenters in my friend Sarah Otto’s new docuseries. I’ve been on a couple of Sarah and Matt’s series and have really enjoyed getting to know them. I first met them in D.C. while being interviewed by Jonathan Otto for his Anxiety and Depression Docuseries.

*-- 9 Ways to Kick the Winter Blues --*

1. Make sure you're taking Vitamin D.

I don't know about anyone else, but I hate taking pills. But, by taking Vitamin D on a regular basis, it will actually help fight any depression as well as help keep your body healthy! Make sure to check the labels so that you're getting Vitamin D with Gamma and Alpha.

2. Up your Omega-3 intake.

By taking Omega-3 pills daily it can help maintain healthy levels of the brain chemicals dopamine and serotonin, both of which increase happiness and reduce symptoms of depression or winter blues! A good Vegan source for Omega-3 is flaxseed, hemp, and walnuts.

3. Get a Sun Lamp!

Some people swear by sun lamps, saying the full-spectrum light is similar in comparison to real sunlight, which people lack exposure to in the winter.

4. Go outside anyways!

While it may be cold and the weather may be crappy, make sure to go outside for at least 10 minutes a day. Believe it or not, even just 10 minutes of exposure to the natural sun light can make a big difference. Because the days are getting shorter, take a break at work once a day, walk around the outside of the building. Even if it is cloudy, the sunlight is going to poke through, increasing your serotonin and dopamine levels.

5. Leave the hermitage.

Resist the urge to sit and do nothing, or to block yourself off from friends. A good book, a new yoga routine, a weekend away with the girls, or even just a night with the girls (or guys), can make a world of a difference. Spending time with friends is a great way for you to raise your levels and soothe your soul.

6. Warm up your green drinks and recipes.

When all you want is hot cocoa, sometimes it is hard to want salads, smoothies, and green juices. So, instead, add a bit of kick to it with ginger. Or, to get more of your veggies in the colder months, add them to stews or soups. Find ways to change up your recipes, including fruit in your every day schedule. And remember, in the winter months, add a bit of cinnamon to things. It can help keep you from getting sick.

7. Sleep.

Make sure to get your full 8 hours of sleep. By creating a sleep schedule allowing for a full night of sleep, without over sleeping like a teenager, you will be well rested and less likely to be depressed.

8. Don't eat junk food.

When you eat junk food, it causes you to have sadder thoughts, bad sleep schedules, and leaves you feeling less healthy. We all know when it is cold outside, we want to curl up on the couch and watch a movie and veg out on whatever we have in the house. The more unhealthy the food, the more likely it is for depression to hit.

9. Get Aerobic Exercise.

This may seem like a repeat of #4, but it's not. By allowing for 30 minutes of exercise a day, 5 days a week, you'll give your body a chance to stretch, as well as allow for more sunlight exposure, and it will get your endorphins pumping, which helps increase your serotonin and dopamine levels as well. Get some warm close, take a brisk walk, and decrease your anxiety and stress! It's a win win!

Obviously, this is a guide, and not all of these will work for everyone, but they are a good place to start in helping to combat depression or winter blues!

Would you believe that most people who buy books do not read them?
I don’t know about you, but few things have changed my life more dramatically than books.
As a preschooler, I was frustrated because of my physical limitations, but books gave me freedom in my mind.
When I was in seventh grade, I was ashamed of myself because of my weight. I began to withdraw. My formative years could have gone badly but health books turned it around.
As an adult, books have helped me understand the world better and be a better person.
Sadly, there have been many books I’ve picked up and not finished. I wonder what I’ve missed out on?
If you already ordered The Thyroid Reset Diet, please read it. If you have thyroid disease, I believe it could change your life. My biggest fear is that you get it but don’t read it or that you read it but don’t do it.
It will involve some change. Yet if your thyroid gets better, you will look back and be glad you put in the effort.

Manage Weight Before Becoming Pregnant

Leah Remini, Molly Sims, and Milla Jovovich each gained 70-80 pounds while pregnant. And they're not alone. Around 48% of women gain too much, putting themselves and their fetus at risk for complications during pregnancy and birth.

As unhealthy as that is, for the 25% of women in the U.S. who go into pregnancy already obese, the health challenges are even more daunting.

They're at greater risk of gestational diabetes and hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (leading to post-birth diabetes and high blood pressure), and their children can develop health challenges that plague them throughout life.

According to researchers who wrote a viewpoint article in a recent issue of JAMA Network, "in utero exposure to obesity is associated with altered gene expression and metabolic abnormalities in offspring."

That is particularly worrying for two reasons:

Lead Dangers Greater Than Believed

Deaths tied to lead poisoning are far greater, by as much as 10 times, in the United States than previous estimates, according to a startling study.

The findings, reported by an international team of researchers in The Lancet Public Health journal, concluded that nearly 412,000 Americans die every year as a result of lead contamination. That figure is 10 times higher than prior estimates by the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation at the University of Washington in Seattle.

The new study tracked 14,000 adults for 20 years found those with the highest blood-lead concentrations were 70% more likely to die from heart disease over the course of the research project, and 37% more likely to die from all causes of death, than those with the lowest lead levels.

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention standards indicate blood lead concentrations above 5 micrograms per deciliter are dangerous and require medical attention. But the agency also notes that no safe blood lead level has yet been identified.

Treatment for lead poisoning typically involves chelation, a therapy that removes lead from the blood. But the new research suggests more widespread use of the technique might help lower death rates from heart disease, experts say.

Scientists believe lead exposure can damage the epithelial cells lining the body's blood vessels, which increases the likelihood of developing plaques that can then cause a heart attack in ways similar to cholesterol.

Toxic BPA Additive Found in Canned Goods

Bisphenol A, also known as BPA, is a chemical used as a plastic hardener that has been under increased scrutiny for potentially causing reproductive abnormalities and leading to increased risks of cancer and diabetes. BPA is a component of epoxy resin and is also the leading chemical found to preserve foods.
Previous reports have shown BPA in products including baby bottles, baby formula, and plastic sippy cups. There is now evidence of the chemical in a variety of canned goods, including some goods which were labeled to contain no BPA. The Consumers Union, a non-profit organization, tested 19 name-brand foods held in containers made of metal, paper, and plastic. The study found levels of BPA in nearly all canned goods they tested, including organic foods and even those labeled as BPA free. They found what they considered was high levels of BPA in Del Monte green beans, Progresso Vegetable Soup, and Campbell’s Chicken Soup. It is best to play it safe, and eat more fresh fruits and vegetables.
