BALANCE​

Before I was diagnosed with cancer, I had a general understanding of what holistic healing technically was: an approach that looked at the whole person versus just the symptoms in order to heal them. But, I didn't truly understand what healing and staying healthy on multiple levels meant or how much all of these levels interacted with and affected one another. It's one thing to know about the mind-body connection, about mental health and emotional health, about spirituality, and another one entirely to go through the process of discovering, exploring, navigating, and attempting to tap into all of them to heal.

It took me a while to accept that I didn't just need to focus on my physical health in order to heal from cancer and go on to thrive, to give myself the best chance of never having to go through this again. And that's because physical healing is actually the more straightforward one. You have doctors, research, well-laid out plans and steps, therapies, drugs, and tons of advice and input on what you should do. But when it comes to mental, emotional, and spiritual health? It's easy to feel lost, unsure, scared, resistant, and therefore unwilling to look at and explore these areas of health and healing.

Trust me, I have been there. These areas of our health require digging, they require changing, they require exploring ourselves and maybe accepting some difficult truths. But it is my firm belief that these parts of our healing are so very important and just as necessary to our health as the physical level. Working on my mental health has better prepared me for cancer PTSD and living day-to-day with the fear of recurrence and the truth of our mortality. Supporting my emotional health has allowed me to discover long-held, negative beliefs about myself that were simply not true and that I needed to release, building self-worth and personal growth in their place. And exploring my spirituality, something I had never done before, made it possible to release much of the anger and resentment and bitterness surrounding being diagnosed and open myself up to all of the gifts that adversity can give us, if we let it. This exploration also helped me to fear death a little less, because it helped me to begin discovering my beliefs around what I think happens to us after this life.

In short, exploring these areas of my health and healing that I had never really considered before, let alone connected to, is what got me to where I am now. It's somewhere I couldn't have even imagined on the day I was diagnosed. It's a place of strength, determination, self-love, confidence, achievement, connectedness, flow, and yes, sometimes fear and anxiety and anger. But I have far more good days than bad, and that's really all we can ask for. It's what got me to who I am meant to be and the life I meant to live. The Anishinaabe have yet another ethic in their code which beautifully illustrates the importance of the connectedness of all of these levels of health and healing.

"Keep yourself balanced. Your Mental self, Spiritual self, Emotional self, and Physical self - all need to be strong, pure and healthy. Work out the body to strengthen the mind. Grow rich in spirit to cure emotional ails."

And I really couldn't agree more. I feel the rightness of this need for balance deep in my gut. I believe it has played such a role not only in my healing but in the foundation of my thriving after cancer. So, if you haven't explored these corners of your healing and growth yet, now is the time to start. You have no idea the number of ways your life can grow and change for the better, and it all starts with one step: opening yourself to possibility that there is some work to do on these levels, and then exploring what that work is for you. It could be healing traumas, releasing anger, asking for or granting forgiveness, exploring your spirituality and what it means for you, reducing your stress and getting better at managing it, or something else entirely. Whatever the work is, the important part is that you do it.

Resources: Lymphedema​

Lymphedema! Ooomph, what a beast it can be. Many cancer patients lose lymph nodes during surgery, and even losing two or three lymph nodes increases your lifetime risk of developing lymphedema. I shared Nancy's List in this group recently, a list of financial and integrative treatment resources for cancer patients. Nancy recently shared a lymphatic health symposium by Cancer Rehab Austin, and I am passing the video links on to you. Additionally, cancer survivor and cancer dietician Jean LaMantia, whom I interviewed for imPOWERED last summer, is an expert in diet to support lymphatic health, and on her blog you can find many articles about diet and lymphedema as well as diet and cancer, completely free. She also recently launched her Lymphedema School, which does have a cost. The links for all of these are in the Facebook group and can help you to improve your lymphatic health and prevent or reduce lymphedema.

We lost one of our tribe this week, and it's been tough. It is so painful when someone passes, and for us it can bring up a lot of difficult emotions. There is the grief and sadness of course, but for those who have had cancer too it can trigger a lot of fear and anxiety. What went wrong? Why them? Why now? Why not me? This is a simple reminder to remember that every path is different, every cancer is different, every person is different. We can't know the future, so the best we can do is try to live as much in this moment as possible, to squeeze everything we can out of the present, and to cherish and feel gratitude for the life and the health and the time we have right now. Sending everyone love and hugs, and I'm taking this moment to say that I appreciate each and every one of you. The fact that we don't have to be alone on this journey is everything ❤️

Quercetin: "2020 Phytonutrient of the Year"​

I'd like to nominate quercetin "2020 Phytonutrient of the Year".
Quercetin was already blowing up in the scientific literature, but then in 2020, attention on chloroquin's "zinc ionophore" activity quercetin's zinc ionophore activity to join the spotlight.
An ionophore is an “ion carrier”---a molecule that facilitates the movement of electronically charged ions in and out of cell membranes.
Zinc ions have potent anti-viral properties, so anything that gets more zinc ions into cells can improve immune response to viruses.
As luck would have it, quercetin is one of the most common phytonutrients in fruits and vegetables
It is abundant in apples, honey, raspberries, onions, red grapes, cherries, citrus fruits, green leafy vegetables, and capers.
Quercetin is highest in capers and onions, and the bulb color and type of onion seems to be a determining factor for quercetin concentration in onions. Red onions are your best onion source.
Plus, it turns out that ... surprise, surprise ... the quercetin content of food is related to the health of the soil it is grown in, the time of harvest, and storage conditions.
So foods that you grow yourself, pick at optimal harvest time, and eat fresh are far superior to foods you get from the store.

Hi Jimi, from time to time I’ll get an email from a medical research group… essentially, looking for human “guinea pigs”.

That’s because I tested a soap once when I was in college… I was broke, and they paid me to wash my face (which I was doing anyway) so it was a clear “win-win.”

Here’s the thing though… they had been researching that soap for longer than they’ve been researching the current “shots” that are supposed to end this pandemic.

A LOT longer.

And it was soap, so… not so much was at stake.

What’s going on today with the rushed science and minimal research really, really concerns me…

I just saw a news release, (and I’m not kidding here) where the post-v@((!n@+ion instructions were:

“Pull forward and stay here in the area with paramedics for 15-30 minutes. If you feel sick at all or have any problems, just honk three times, and someone will come to help you.

You shouldn’t have any side-effects but just in case you do, or experience anaphylactic shock, we want to make sure you get help.”​

How To Heal The Adrenals One Meal At A Time

Pecans Fight Heart Disease, Diabetes

Eating just a small handful of pecans a day may protect overweight and obese adults against developing cardiovascular disease and Type 2 diabetes, according to a study published in Nutrients.

Researchers at the Jean Mayer USDA Human Nutrition Research Center on Aging at Tufts University found that incorporating about one-and-a-half ounces of pecans into a typical American diet significantly improved insulin sensitivity and had a marked effect on markers of cardiometabolic disease in overweight and obese adults with excess belly fat.

Special: Doctors Using Magnesium to Reverse Diabetes

While many studies have linked tree nuts, such as pecans, walnuts, and almonds, to a reduced risk of heart disease, this was the first study to look at the effect of pecans on factors specifically related to Type 2 diabetes.

Obesity is a risk factor for Type 2 diabetes, and both obesity and diabetes increase the risk for heart disease.

"Pecans are naturally high in monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats, so replacing a portion of the saturated fat in the diet with these healthier fats can explain some of the cardio-protective effects we observed," said lead researcher Diane McKay, Ph.D., adding they also contain vitamins and essential minerals.

Exercise Cuts Prostate Cancer Risk

"Jeopardy" and "Wheel of Fortune" creator Merv Griffin said in a 2007 interview: "I've been very fortunate with my health. I smoke. I drink — not heavily, but I like my wine. I don't exercise. I take a cab to a cab."

Later that year, he died from a recurrence of prostate cancer that first surfaced in 1996.

Could he have avoided that result? Quite possibly.

Special: Doctors Witness Amazing Joint Pain Changes

A study from the U.K. looked at 140,000 men — around 80,000 of whom had prostate cancer — and found that guys ages 50 and older who exercised regularly reduced their risk of prostate cancer by 51% compared with those who were not active.

In fact, the researchers say that guys can cut their risk of prostate cancer by more than half if they spend just 20 minutes a day walking or gardening.

We say that you'll see even greater rewards if you exercise an hour a day.

But what's really impressive about this study is that the researchers didn't rely on self-reporting for their findings. They looked at variations in DNA sequencing that indicate a person's level of physical activity.

Yes, physical activity changes which of your genes are switched on or off, and that changes your risk of cancer.

So guys, get as active as you can (10,000 steps a day or the equivalent), and avoid added sugar and syrups, saturated or trans fats, and any grain that isn't 100% whole.

You'll decrease your odds of cancer while increasing your odds of normal I am a spammer ban me function.
