Five Myths about High Blood Pressure​

Myth Number One: It's No Big Deal.
The problem with high blood pressure initially is there are no symptoms. You don't feel bad, so how could anything be wrong? The truth is, when your blood flow begins to push too hard against your blood vessels, it leads to damage of your heart, kidneys, and other organs in your body. High blood pressure is a very big deal indeed.
Myth Number Two: There Is No Good Treatment.
Many people feel there's nothing they can do about their high blood pressure. The truth is if you follow a sensible plan, you can manage your high blood pressure. More about this in just a moment...
Myth Number Three: A "Little" High Blood Pressure Is Okay.
When you take your blood pressure readings, you probably notice they vary somewhat. You probably also notice there are two numbers, one on top and one on bottom. Normal readings are: 119 or below for the top number, and 79 or below for the bottom number. Some people believe that as long as one of these numbers is normal, you're okay. The truth is if either of your blood pressure numbers is above normal, you need to do something right away.
Myth Number Four: High Blood Pressure Cannot Be Prevented.
This idea is dead wrong. Even if everyone in your family has higher blood pressure, this doesn't mean there is nothing you can do. Simple changes such as eating a healthy diet, limiting salt intake, and keeping your weight under control, can help you prevent high blood pressure.
Myth Number Five: Treatment Is Difficult.
Most people think that treating high blood pressure requires giving up all your favorite foods, engaging in some crazy exercise plan, or taking dangerous and expensive drugs. While you do need to make changes to get your blood pressure under control, those changes do not have to be difficult or unpleasant.

Why Insomnia Can't Be Ignored

Fifty years ago, 17-year-old Randy Gardner and two pals camped out in his bedroom to see what would happen if Gardner broke the world record for sleep deprivation.

The teenager stayed awake for 264.4 hours (that record stands today), experiencing moodiness, hallucinations, incoherent thinking, and slurred speech.

The 50 million to 70 million North Americans who have frequent trouble falling or staying asleep don't have to go to such extremes to discover the side effects of insomnia: relationship problems, heart disease, anxiety, depression, high blood pressure, diabetes, obesity, and stroke.

If you usually don't get six and a half to eight hours of restful sleep, try to ID the cause.

Insomnia can be triggered by environmental problems such as a TV or digital device use, or noise or light in the bedroom (only red light is sleep-compatible). Or you may have trouble sleeping because of emotional distress or a medical condition, such as chronic pain or sleep apnea.

So make your bedroom sleep-friendly, and ask your doc about treatment for any condition that's keeping you awake. Then try these drug-free ways to sleep better.

Exercise daily, but not within three hours of bedtime. Walking 10,000 steps a day dispels stress and cues your body to rest.

Soak in an Epsom salts bath, and eat a banana before bed — the combo of magnesium and potassium relaxes muscles, and hot water helps dispel stress hormones.

Drink chamomile tea. But skip late-night alcohol; it'll spike blood sugar and interfere with sleep cycles.

If these don't do the trick, ask your doc for a referral to a sleep specialist.

Can Vitamin D Help Prevent Heart Problems?
Dr. Chauncey Crandall, M.D., writes:

Although vitamin D is best known for developing strong bones, low blood levels have been linked to an increased risk of heart attacks and strokes. But recent studies found vitamin D supplements did not bolster heart health.

“Initially, there was a lot of enthusiasm for vitamin D treatment for cardiovascular disease, and this was based on observational data,” said Dr. Erin Michos, associate professor of medicine at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine in Baltimore. “The link was that individuals who have low blood levels of vitamin D have increased risk of a lot of bad things,” she said, “including increased risk of heart attacks, stroke, heart failure, and even increased risk of death.”

But associations don’t always mean causation.

In June, an analysis in JAMA Cardiology that included 21 clinical trials showed vitamin D supplements do not reduce the risk of having or dying from a heart attack or stroke. A highly publicized 2018 study called VITAL was part of that analysis. Researchers studied more than 25,000 people across the U.S. who were taking either a daily vitamin D supplement of 2,000 IUs or a placebo.

Even study participants with low levels of vitamin D at the start of the study did not see a decreased risk of heart attack or stroke from supplementation.

Dr. Chauncey W. Crandall is author of Dr. Crandall’s Heart Health Report newsletter. He is a Yale graduate and is chief of the Cardiac Transplant Program at the world-renowned Palm Beach Cardiovascular Clinic in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida. He practices interventional, vascular, and transplant cardiology.

As you will see below, I made an exciting announcement today in the Facebook group. The very first Orenda Cancer Community online course is live and available on our website!

This course started with a smile. About a week after I was diagnosed, I realised that I was going to be able to help so many people when I got through this, and it was the first time that I smiled genuinely after diagnosis. I have been lovingly creating this for about a year and thinking about it for over 3. And as much as I hope it helps other people, creating it has helped me just the same. It was a part of the glow of that light at the end of the cancer tunnel. It’s a part of what guided me through it all.

When cancer or other massive challenges drop into our lives, everything else ceases. All we can see is this new and terrifying mountain in front of us, and it's so hard to find any way up, over, through, or around it. It is all-consuming and at the same time numbing. It can paralyze you.

When we are paralyzed by fear, indecision, resentment, anger, or any of the other dark places we can find ourselves in after a diagnosis, it can be overwhelming and confusing. It is pure chaos, both in our external world and in our internal one. It can feel like we are stuck in the middle of the worst storm we have ever experienced, getting tossed around and being forced to go where the wind pushes us. It’s a helpless feeling and, most importantly, it’s an impossible place to heal from. We can’t make the choices we need to, we can’t focus on learning what we need to learn, we can’t believe that we can heal if we are constantly telling ourselves that we can’t do this.

There is a mindset to overcoming and healing. Even the toughest of moments don’t last forever, but when they feel as though they are stretching out endlessly before you and you have no idea where or how they terminate, having a purpose to hold onto, a desire for what lies beyond that end point, is what will help pull you through when you have no idea how to do it yourself. My desire to share what I’ve learned far and wide is what simultaneously pulled me through and anchored me in purpose. Hold onto your desires in the thick of the storm. Dream of what waits for you beyond the reaches of the hurricane. Believe that the wind will pass and the clouds will part and there will be ready to greet you a new beginning with a new purpose. It may be unknown yet, and the path to exploring it may be a little scary to embark on when you get there, but it will be a beautiful journey, and it will be entirely yours.

Mental Health Monday​

I've talked about Yoga With Adriene before and how much I LOVE her yoga videos. There is just something warm and inviting about her energy that I always find so comforting. She somehow made me feel less sad and panicked in those months after my diagnosis when I was desperate for things that would bring me peace and comfort. I discovered at some point last year that she also has a number of meditations on her channel, and there is one in particular that I keep going back to. On the tails of last week's MHM where I was discussing ways to combat morning anxiety, I wanted to share this morning meditation with you from Adriene. I love it because it's a good length for the morning at 7 minutes, not too long and not too short, and it's also very accessible; if you've never meditated before, this is a great one to start with. A little connection to your breath, a little connection to your body, and some calming and centering to start your day with less anxiety and more focus.

P.S. You don't have to do this meditation in the morning; I definitely pull it out at all times of the day!
