My Favorite Alternative Sweeteners​

Last week we talked about many of the issues with added sugar and refined sugar. This week I want to talk about a few alternatives that may help you to crush that occasional sweet tooth.

Personally, I am not a big sweets fan. I generally would never really crave a candy bar or soda. But occasionally, I do like to have a little sweetness in my life.

Many times when people are looking for sugar alternatives some of the things that are brought up are aspartame, sucralose and other synthetic sweeteners. For years, these have been touted as better alternatives to sugar some would even say halither. Healthier or not they are still not good. If you are still using these, its may be time to find some better choices.

Artificial sweeteners such as aspartame, sucralose, ace-K, and saccharin have been the subject of heated controversy for years due to their potential for harm. While all of these sweeteners are supposedly "safe" and sugar-free, they now are being scrutinized more closely.

A host of issues from, headaches, poor digestion, and crohn's disease are all said to be side effects of their ingestion.
So what are some better choices?

Here are just a few alternatives that I like:

Stevia - Listed first, but not necessarily my favorite. As far as health it is a pretty decent alternative, however the taste is just not as good for me as some others. It is native to South America and has been used for hundreds of years in that region to support healthy blood sugar and prompt weight loss.

This zero calorie and zero carb alternative has been a "go to" for many seeking to sweeten our Haelan 951. Stevioside is the element in the leaves that makes it more than 200 times as sweet as sugar.

Monk Fruit - One of the most popular sugar substitutes for low-carb dieters is monk fruit. Monk fruit contains compounds that, when extracted, provide 300–400 times the sweetness of cane sugar, but monk fruit sugar contains no calories and has no effect on blood sugar.

Many popular brands do add in the sugar alcohols (Erythritol...not my favorite) to give it a more sugar like texture and consistency but, I have found that just a tiny amount of Monk Fruit powder works for me.

Allulose - Many new allulose reviews have started to show up recently, claiming that it mimics the taste and texture of regular sugar with only a fraction of the calories and carbs. And they are right! It is about as close to the real thing as you can get.

Here is the cool part, it has also been linked to multiple health benefits. Not only can it bump up both weight loss and fat loss, but it may also help stabilize blood sugar levels, support liver health and decrease inflammation throughout the body. Not bad.

Allulose, also known as D-psicose, is a simple sugar found naturally in several food sources, including figs, raisins, maple syrup and brown sugar.

This is becoming my new #1 favorite.

It is important to keep in mind that even a healthier alternative may not be best for your situation. Keep all this in moderation and as always...

Gradual Heart Attacks May Be More Deadly
Dr. Chauncey Crandall, M.D., writes:

Heart attack patients often take longer to seek help if they have gradual symptoms, which may put them at increased risk of death, according to authors of a study published in the European Journal of Cardiovascular Nursing.

Gradual symptoms begin with mild discomfort that slowly worsens, while abrupt symptoms are sudden and cause severe pain. Study author Sahereh Mirzaei, from the University of Illinois at Chicago, and her team analyzed data from 474 heart attack patients seen at U.S. emergency departments.

Symptoms were gradual in 44% and abrupt in 56% of these patients. Those with gradual symptoms waited eight hours to seek medical help, compared to 2.6 hours for those with abrupt symptoms.

Special: Dr. Crandall Saved His Own Heart With This

A delay of no more than two hours is recommended for the best outcomes. Waiting longer increases patients’ risk of serious complications and death, according to the researchers.

Symptoms were triggered by exertion, such as running, climbing stairs, or shoveling snow, in 54% of men with abrupt onset and a diagnosis of ST-elevation myocardial infarction, which is a particularly serious type of heart attack requiring quick restoration of blood flow to blocked arteries.

Mirzaei said men with ischemic heart disease or multiple risk factors such as high blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol, or a family history of heart disease should be aware that chest pain or discomfort after physical activity or exercise could be a heart attack.

Dr. Chauncey W. Crandall is author of Dr. Crandall’s Heart Health Report newsletter. He is a Yale graduate and is chief of the Cardiac Transplant Program at the world-renowned Palm Beach Cardiovascular Clinic in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida. He practices interventional, vascular, and transplant cardiology.

Fight Bad Breath:

Be accountable for your choices so you don't fall back into old patterns that you have worked so hard to outgrow.

Take conscious control. You need to be more intentional with your thoughts and the actions you take every day. Figure out what caused you to fall off track with your good habits. Ask yourself what can you do about your distractions starting now.

Reflect on your behaviors and work toward instilling good patterns. Don't beat yourself up too hard and remind yourself to focus on the present.

The Best and Worst Times to See a Doctor

Based on a number of different studies, the best time to see your doctor is at the beginning of their shift, which in most cases is first thing in the morning.

Meanwhile, the later into the day you see the doctor, the more likely your level of care is to suffer.

This is based on a number of different studies, such as one that followed doctors likelihood of prescribing unnecessary antibiotics later in the day... another showing they prescribed more opiods later in the day versus more careful solutions... another that followed their likelihood of properly washing their hands (or not)... and several others.

This is largely attributed to "decision fatigue," which is basically the fact that making constant important decisions as the day goes on wears down mental (and physical) energy.

In short, doctors are increasingly exhausted as the day goes on, and more prone to make rushed decisions and mistakes.

We're all prone to decision fatigue, of course.

A study showed that judges are less likely to make favorable rulings as the day goes on.

Quarterbacks in football make more questionable choices toward the end of games.

And we all tend to make poorer choices in shopping at grocery stores if we're mentally drained.

Compounding the issue for doctors is that, as the day goes on, they're often more rushed in their appointments.

In short, that's because the earlier appointments are often late or run longer than planned, creating a domino effect of "squeezing" the appointments in later in the day.

Because of the importance of what doctors' decisions are impacting -- that is, YOU -- this is particularly important information to keep in mind (and please do SHARE this email with others!)

Your Body Can Heal Itself:​

Your body has an incredible healing power within it. In 9 months, while we were in our mothers womb, we developed from 2 cells into trillions of living, breathing cells. Our bodies can truly heal! We have to remove the toxic thoughts, chemicals and stressors on our system so we can heal as designed.

I believe that a cancer diagnosis or a major health scare is actually an opportunity to change our thinking patterns, to draw closer to God and to learn to master our mind, body and emotions. It may be tough to see, but many people who have overcome chronic disease have reported that the diagnosis and the suffering they endured, helped open their eyes to a new way of life that is so much better than what they had settled for in the past.

We all have events from our lives that affect us. Some of them are in small, fleeting ways, while some of them stay with us long after we think we have moved one. There are and have been many such events in my life. Some I have been able to more easily release and others have taken a lot more work. And when they involve someone else, especially a loved one, that can make it even more difficult.

Forgiveness is one of the most beautiful things in life, but it can also be one of the most difficult to accomplish sometimes. And even when we are able to forgive, emotions like anger can remain. They can still be there unbeknownst to us, but in my experience, it’s more often a case of wilful ignorance. I have one such event like this in my past, one that I have long forgiven, but anger about it kept popping into my head repeatedly over the last week. I ignored it at first, telling myself the anger was illogical and from so long ago that it didn’t matter. But the universe was not going to take that for an answer.

Anger is a valid emotion, but it’s one that often is invalidated. We’re told that we’re just being overly sensitive, that we will get over it, that we should just move on. So, often it ends up getting pushed down because of the way we invalidate it, and when we don’t properly release that anger, it festers away. There is even an argument to made for these emotions impacting our physical health negatively as well, and healing emotional traumas by forgiving (when still needed) and by releasing the negative emotions that remain surrounding them has been a vital part of my cancer healing journey. The fact that this emotion kept getting brought up for me this week was evidence that it was time for me to release it. But that is so much easier said than done. I found something though that helped me with this process this week.

Forgiving first is key, because we can't shift out of anger until forgiveness is truly achieved. But anger from events that have been forgiven or accepted is no longer serving you. It is stagnant and old and harmful. We only hurt ourselves by holding onto it, and it doesn’t change anything to keep it alive. By allowing it to live on within us, we are only feeding something that should have been long gone. Shifting the way we view this anger and even the event that it stemmed from can make a huge difference in our quest to release it.

While not forgotten, start working on viewing this anger (or whatever negative emotion it is) and this event as no longer playing a role in your life. They are things you can reflect on and continue to learn from, but they are no longer active. Start viewing them as inert. They are like souvenirs of a time lived, of lessons learned, of growth achieved. They are testaments to your strength and resilience and evolution. They are something to remind you of how far you have come and where you now want to go instead. They are evidence that you have much to be proud of and much to be grateful for.

Viewing them in this way, the negative emotions and the events that gave them life, it takes their power away because it turns them into something that can be reflected on with positivity. And that makes them so much easier to release, to remove from your heart and place on the shelf where they now belong, where they can be looked at and appreciated for what they were instead of feeling them as if they still are.

Mental Health Monday​

In this week's MHM, I’m talking about another lesson I’ve learned from nature. It doesn’t rush, it doesn’t try to control, it doesn’t pressure itself. It is when I am surrounded by nature that I am reminded of how important it is to take a lesson from it, to slow down, to surrender our timeline, to trust that things are happening as and when they are meant to. Trying to heal from a place of tension and control is just going to make it more difficult. But, when we can slow down and be present, we open to the potential of our healing and the abundant ways to achieve it that surround us. Things that seemed impossible, now seem totally doable. Anxiety, fear, and stress are transformed into hope, joy, and faith. Chaos is replaced with peace.

We are so intensely focused on our physical healing after a diagnosis that we often forget about the emotional healing that very often plays a role in our physical health. Old emotions we are holding onto and traumas that we are keeping at bay and have yet to heal cause us a lot of low-level stress that we may not even be aware of consciously. But you can bet your body is aware of it. And chronic stress has so many negative impacts on our health, not the least of which include lowered immunity and increased blood sugar and inflammation, cancer's best friends!

Lessons Cancer Taught Me: Year 3​

In my first year after diagnosis, I started to have realizations about different things I was learning from cancer: ways I was changing, positive growth I was experiencing, and how my perspective on life was shifting. I started writing them down, and it is something that I continue today.
